Camby might retire if traded

So he's an expiring contract in terms of trade value. Hmm.

If I was in his situation I'd do the same thing. And ya gotta love a guy that wants to be here bad enough that he'd rather retire than play elsewhere. I highly doubt we'd trade him anyway. As the article said, we are paper thin at center.

In the media world, Marcus has come a long way from walking out of Ringside and nearly crying after hearing news of his trade here a year ago.

I'm glad he likes it here, and I'm glad he's a Blazer. The plan was for him to back up Oden this year, or at the very least split time with Oden, yet even though he is playing heavy minutes, he is helping the team at an advanced NBA age.

I think we underestimate how much the "MAR-CUS CAM-BY!" chant impressed this guy. I don't think he's ever been as appreciated as much as he is in Portland, and for some people, that's worth more than money.

Great reference, Chris. I think you're right. Sometimes, for some players, perhaps finally finding a home is worth more than money. That this team is winning also plays into it, I hope.

I'm sure he's also taking some personal credit and pride in the development of LMA.

As he should.

Repped. That's a great call. That perspective never entered my mind. It was an amazing moment last year and I think there's a large grain of truth to your point.

I really don't think it has anything to do with Portland specifically. He felt the same when there was talks of him being traded from the Clippers. THE CLIPPERS. He just doesn't like to be traded, uprooted, etc.

I think you are right, but I think that Marcus feels like he's finally found a home here in Portland. I might be projecting, and I've never read a Channing Frye-like article about how he professes his love for Portland, but I just get that sense. He mentioned in several articles last year and early this season about how much that moment last year meant to him, and how he appreciated it.

I selfishly hope that Marcus becomes a Blazer-lifer. I think it's possible he could become an ambassador/coach/mentor for the players. I honestly can't think of a player that came to Portland that had his kind of impact.

Pippen had the same on court impact (of a seasoned vet, etc), but he never really felt like he was a Portland Trail Blazer. Marcus almost feels like he's been in Portland for years, instead of just barely a year.

I think Miller has warmed up to Portland too. He'll always be a little aloof but I bet if you asked him if he wants to stay or be traded I bet he say stay.

I love to think that Camby loves Portland as a city.

Hopefully he'll do what's best for the city and help the Blazers get as good as possible, whether that means getting traded or not. :)

Ed O.

Agreed. I know the idea of keeping both of them is unpopular among some fans, but I think they'd be better off keeping them instead of trying to trade for a young prospect.

I think whoever they would trade (at point) would not give Portland what Andre is giving them right now. He might in the future, but I'd rather the team take their chances on having a solid (healthy) starting 5 and a strong bench instead of finding that allusive butterfly.

So Rudy would quit and go back to Spain if traded, and Camby might retire? WTF, seriously?

He'd rather retire than get paid another $9 mil per year for a couple more seasons in a sunnier clime?

Sounds like he's burnt out on the game. Probably should trade him.

We said the same things about Juwan Howard last year.

Who cares. Camby can play, Juwan can't.

He was talking about locker room presence and possibly becoming a coach. He said he hasn't seen a player with that kind of an impact. Everybody thought Howard had that impact last year.

No shit Camby is better, but that isn't really relevant to what he said.

Where's you hear that?

RealGM had a quote from Rudy up saying that he would go back to spain if traded.

I really don't mind having Rudy/Camby say that they want to stay here. They are both having a huge impact with this team and are doing there best to make everyone around them better. I do wish we could have kept Howard and kept him as a coach and I like the thought of Camby as an assistant coach later down the line.

What makes you say that? Back in '99-00 Pippen almost won a championship for us. He was the driving force in coming back from being down 3-1 in the series and dominating Game 7 (until the meltdown). His defense turned that series around. He wanted it so bad - to prove all the naysayers wrong who said he couldn't win a title w/o MJ. Remember his outburst after game 3? (see link at 7:35). He was the glue that held that team together IMO. Why didn't he "feel like a Blazer"?

I agree that Pippen was the glue guy to the blazers. He seemed to be the only one who could keep all the head cases in line. I was really really bummed when we refused to offer him more then a 1 year contract and he walked after the 2003 season.

I'm fully aware of what Pippen did. that's why I said he had a similar "ON THE COURT" impact. I was talking about an off the court impact. A large part of that was due to the fact the franchise was in a different part of its history, we didn't hear about Pippens appreciation for the fans, or love of being here.

Although it might never happen, it seems that Camby could see himself spending time here in some form, with the franchise. I never got that sense from Pippen. Anything he's done in the league since then, he's done with the Bulls, or because of Phil Jackson, the Lakers (iirc).

I understand. But had Pippen and the Blazers won a title in 2000 things might be different. It's not surprising now that he doesn't spend much time around the Blazer Organization. The way things ended for him here were not great. He won 6 titles with the Bulls and had his most productive seasons there, but he would have really cherished winning a championship w/o MJ.

Even if we didn't win a championship Pippen wanted to finish his career in Portland. If we had offered him a 2 year deal instead of letting him walk away we might have seen him around here from time to time afterwords.
