Supporters and critics of Canada's health care system have found themselves in a new debate sparked by the decision of a provincial premier to seek heart surgery in the United States.

The Newfoundland government said Tuesday that Premier Danny Williams would be absent for a few weeks after his doctors recommended he go to the U.S. for a heart procedure.

As Conservative pundits in the U.S. quickly pounced on the news, suggesting it proves that President Barack Obama's proposed health insurance reforms wouldn't work, some Canadian analysts agreed that it highlighted the weaknesses of Canada's health care network.

"Think about the absurdity about Canadians spending their income on medical treatment outside the country because it's not provided here at home," said Brett Skinner, president of the Fraser Institute, the Vancouver-based free-market think-tank.

Skinner, who has a PhD in political science and public policy, said that Williams is just one among thousands of Canadians who seek health care services every year down south because of long waiting lists and poor access here.

The future:

Candians and countries with "universal healthcare" will go to the US for surgeries because the care is better in the higher end and less wait.

US citizens, struggling with the high cost of healthcare, will go to 3rd world countries like India and Thailand for treatment!

Circle of Love!

The U.S. has the best healthcare in the world. That shouldn't be disputed. Our system isn't very good, though. If you have enough money, it is great, though.

He didn't want to wait 3 years for the surgery and have it done by an ob-gyn.

No one is doubting that the quality of health care available for those who have money is good.

The point is to make it more accessible for everyone.

But hey, if hyperbole and anecdotes weren't allowed in discussing politics, 90% of you wouldn't be able to say anything.

Why, if you read the article, it itself points out how people have also gone to Canada for procedures too.

For years, Americans travelled to Canada for valve repair surgery, to avoid having to replace a diseased or defective valve with an artificial one. Valve repair, or valve-sparing techniques were developed in Canada, "and in particular here, at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre. So, it's been a reverse," Feindel said. "We've had people come from other countries and the U.S. for surgery."

It's kind of like when Rush praised our healthcare system when he had his issue while in Hawaii, not realizing that Hawaii has a unique form of universal healthcare...and he's insanely rich and can afford to get whatever he needed done.

Americans spend over a billion dollars a year in Canada for prescription drugs by mail.

American drug companies typically tack on an additional 200%-400% profit on the identical drugs when they sell them in America to Americans.

Treason.

C'mon, he was so stoned on stolen Oxycotin he didn't know what he was saying. :devilwink:
