First Canzano.....

NBA season opener. Rose Garden Arena. No better time to get real about the Trail Blazers.

I am worried.

The Blazers haven't looked good in the preseason. They're razor thin, and asking too much of Marcus Camby and Brandon Roy. And I'm unconvinced that the front office will make the moves necessary to make Portland a playoff-series winner.

Blazers general manager Rich Cho said when he was hired that the team was "one or two moves" from being a contender. Those moves haven't happened, and if we're reading the Jerryd Bayless trade correctly, it doesn't feel like they're coming anytime soon. The Blazers appear content to move slow, and the top teams in the league feel like they're getting away from Portland.

Roy is a star. He's going to do his thing. He'll lead. Most of his teammates will follow. But it's the glue players in between that matter most in a season like this. In prior years, there's been a calm in the locker room. But that's been replaced with a peculiar feel that surrounds this team -- one that has caused those around the team to observe that "something's not right."

I receive a lot of email from Blazers fans who have suggestions for the organization. This season the advice ranges from remedies to the team's injury problems -- including better nutrition and better shoes -- to a reader who suggested that Nancy Kerrigan cursed the Blazers. You know, after Tanya's knee-job.

So maybe it's worth asking Kerrigan to lift the curse today.

But also, maybe it's worth acknowledging that the Blazers haven't done much in the last few months to indicate they're moving in the right direction.

Wesley Matthews is a shining bright point. But there's hasn't been enough improvement. And the margin for error with this team isn't as large as it's been in the past.

Paul Allen felt impatient in the early part of the offseason, when Kevin Pritchard was fired and the coaching staff was shuffled. Nate McMillan's former assistant coaches viewed their dismissals as a sign that ownership was leaning on the head coach to win a playoff series.

That feeling is why tonight's game and a fast start in the first month of the season for the Blazers become so important.

Roy said on Monday, "My goal is to improve on the season before," and that means that the Blazers need to reach the conference semifinals.

I believe in Roy. I think McMillan is a good coach. I like Nic Batum's game. And I'm hopeful that Greg Oden will return someday to avenge his honor in the face of all those who believe he'll never be a factor. But right now, the Blazers don't feel any closer to the top of the NBA than they were a year or two ago.

Last season, the Blazers played inspired. They outworked, outhustled and outscrapped opponents. They won games on will, with the rest of the league writing them off as snakebit by injuries.

It was one of the great stories in the league, and one that wasn't celebrated enough by the NBA. Fans loved the resiliency. But I'm not sure Blazers fans can be dragged through another campaign like that. And I'm convinced that the organization believes it can simply flip a switch today, and dismiss a lackluster preseason, and somehow persevere.

The Lakers flip switches. The Celtics flip switches. Those are seasoned playoff teams that understand what it takes to play deep in the playoffs. I'm not sure the Blazers understand that they need to play hard and scrap, and beat the league's deeper, more talented teams on their effort alone. There is something that doesn't feel quite right about this season.

I'm worried.

But just in case, give it a rest, Nancy Kerrigan.

AND HERES J QUICK.....

Now i realize you guys will likely dismiss this but as i said the other day.... i have a bad feeling too. EVEN HCP thinks are depth is bad. This year there will be no Bayless, Webster or Howard to save our asses. Instead we can set our sights on OBERTO, DUANTE, and FREAKING AARMON JOHNSON! GAG.

I sense much anger in this one. Anger leads to hate...hate leads to suffering...

yes im on the dark side of the force and cannot be a jedi. i will gladly play darth vadar.

but seriously.... they are both right

...

Phoenix, meanwhile, had a disastrous preseason.

The Suns went 2-6, with their six defeats coming by an average of 23.3 points, including a 144-106 loss to Denver in their preseason finale. Phoenix averaged 20 turnovers in the preseason, shot just 25 percent from three-point range and had coach Alvin Gentry lamenting a lack of "physical presence."

Of course, as Roy and many of the Blazers have professed the last month, the preseason doesn't matter. But tonight does, and both teams have some lofty expectations to live up to.

"We're a very talented team and we have the ability and potential to be a very, very, very good team," Matthews said. "It's just a matter of putting it together. These past couple practices have been very good, and everybody is picking their games up. I think we are heading in the right direction."

Mixum, seriously dude, why don't you give it a rest? We get it. You've illustrated this point repeatedly over the past couple weeks (past couple of years). You're acting like a broken record, and you wonder why people don't like you? You have a bad feeling. We know. Why don't we wait for the season to actually start and then we can decide if the team is broken?

vader dies you know. and vader's thoughts were clouded by hatred. vader had hate and evilness (and blindness) cursing through his soul. He also was brainwashed easily by Senator Canzanotine.

So yeah, I guess you are vader. ;)

but seriously.... they are both right

Opinions aren't 'right' until proven correct...the season hasn't started yet, meaning their opinions aren't 'right' yet.

I have never seen a "fan" work so hard to find so much negative to say about "his" team.

And I still haven't.

Howard and Oberto are about equally scrubby, Matthews is a better player than Webster, Dante is way more effective than Howard and Armon actually is a better point guard than Bayless ... now if you'd brought up the centers you might actually be on to something.

I don't even know where to begin picking apart the Canzano section...
Those moves haven't happened, and if we're reading the Jerryd Bayless trade correctly, it doesn't feel like they're coming anytime soon.
You're not reading it correctly, John. Which isn't surprising, since in "covering" almost every trade the Blazers have made in the last three years you've misconstrued something--whether not understanding CBA, mixing up how much trade exceptions are worth, combining them, etc. In this case, a late-lotto pick is much more valuable in consolidation trades than Jerryd Bayless (our 9th- or 10th-man) is. Just ask the Knicks trying to get Melo right now. They desperately are looking for a first-rounder sometime in the next couple of years...not a backup SG/PG. The fact that neither you nor Canzano are praising Cho on this move is neither surprising nor distressing to me.

But there's hasn't been enough improvement. And the margin for error with this team isn't as large as it's been in the past.
I'm not trying to be flip, but has our 8-man rotation played intact once this preseason? And idk, but I'd imagine that with the West being down and most of our team either better or healthy, the margin for error is significantly higher than it was last year.

Having Quick and Canzano backing up your opinions on basketball isn't exactly the best way to win an argument. If you want me to blow up any more Canzano thoughts, let me know.

There's also the minor fact that Quick's column is actually quite positive. I suspect that MIXUM stopped reading after the first paragraph.

Idk why but I feel slighted that they call themselves "Loud City"

What's next? "Get Loud With Us"?

Careful what you guys say or Mixum will run to Ed O again.

Is something rotten in Denmark (i.e. Portland)? We'll soon find out. All I know is the pre-season was not encouraging. I'm hoping everything changes tomorrow night with a win.

Miller/Armon/Mills
Roy/Rudy/Williams
Batum/Matthews/Babbitt
Aldridge/Camby/Cunningham
Oden/Joel/Oberto

If healthy, that looks pretty good. When we have injuries, just like any other team, you're not going to be as deep... that's pretty obvious.

Whatever, this is still supposed to be fun. I'm glad basketball is finally back. This isn't life or death...

I don't know, Shooter...there's literally been nothing that has happened this preseason that has wavered my excitement one iota to the negative. I'm stoked to watch games. Though it seems that tomorrow I'll be watching via computer.

I'll second that...my enthusiam is as high as ever, and I hope not to be proven wrong

This is "Rip City!"

"Get Ripped With Us!!"

I like it.

Glad to hear it. I hope you're right. Personally, I'm a little concerned, but we'll find out soon enough what kind of team we have this year.

Go Blazers!!!

even if we suck these guys will never admit it....

all you will hear is "next year"

Nah, we'll be very disappointed if we suck this year while you'll piddle yourself in excitement over it.

Watch the personal attacks buddy.

Also, I think maybe we should just randomly change the subject every post.

Pickled Herring, good for you or bad?
