Mickelson, PGA West's Stadium Course Back After Long Layoffs
Phil Mickelson is back after a long layoff. So is PGA West's TPC Stadium Course.
The 45-year-old Mickelson is making his first start since the Presidents Cup in October, while the Stadium Course is back in the CareerBuilder Challenge rotation after nearly 30 years.
Mickelson also is playing for the first time since splitting with swing coach Butch Harmon to work with Andrew Getson. The 2002 and 2004 champion is winless since the 2013 British Open.
Jason Dufner shoots 65 for 1-stroke lead at CareerBuilder Challenge
Jason Dufner patiently worked his way around PGA West's TPC Stadium Course on Friday to take the lead in the CareerBuilder Challenge.
Dufner shot a 7-under 65, matching the best round of the first two days on the difficult course, which is being used in the tournament for the first time since 1987. Jamie Lovemark was a stroke back after a 65 on the adjacent Nicklaus Tournament Course.
Francesco Molinari on a roll at CareerBuilder Challenge
Francesco Molinari began playing golf as a profession in 2005, at the age of 22, competing primarily on the European Tour. He began playing on the PGA Tour as a non-member four years later, and has since made more than $3 million in 70 events.
But it wasn’t until last year, at the age of 32, that the Italian finally played in the annual PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament in the Coachella Valley.
More than two years after his last victory, the 45-year-old left-hander is in the mix heading into the weekend at the CareerBuilder Challenge.
Mickelson followed up his opening 68 at La Quinta Country Club with a 7-under 65 at the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West. It was his lowest score on the PGA Tour since the final round of last year’s FedEx St. Jude Classic.
Jason Dufner made two great escapes. The first, from Alcatraz, no less.
David Lingmerth got no such reprieve at PGA West's punishing TPC Stadium Course.
Dufner won the CareerBuilder Challenge in partnership with the Clinton Foundation with a par on the second hole of a playoff Sunday, taking advantage of Lingmerth's shot that bounced off the jagged rocks and into the water.
