What's clear is Nike will act as consigliere. The people in Eugene want a big name to rally around at cocktail parties. The emphasis will be on winning, but also on filling the arena with enthusiastic season-ticket holders. Also, the new coach is going to have to have enough splash and charisma to woo boosters to open their checkbooks and make donations in tough economic times.

It becomes more apparent every article Canzano writes that he has hate for UO.

I think this will be a great hire by UO, he was a great coach while at Seton Hall.
 
In college you have no choice but to play for the guy, unless you want to sit out a year of course. NBA ego's get in the way of a hard nose coach, in college players respond to those types.

BTW, I can't beleive that Canzano still can't let the Mark Few thing go. I mean c'mon man. You can talk about it until your red in the face, but unless Few is getting a divorce anytime soon there's no way he's leaving Gonzaga.

I don't think Few would be a good fit. His specialty is taking generally poor talent with one really good player and winning. I think he'd struggle with the type of talent we have and struggle to recruit the talent we require.

As to who would be a good coach for UO, I really don't know. Carlisomo makes sense, but he wears on people like a bad sports coat.
 
PJ would be a huge hire for the UO, he may have not won on the NBA level, but his experience level is beyond 95% of the available coaches out there.

Doesn't his son play for ASU? That would be interesting. Kinda like when Mike Bibby went to Arizona, despite his dad coaching at USC, except that Nate and his son actually talk to one another...

a common definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results. PJ does shmooz well giving ready sound bites to reporters, but the players always tune him out.

I've grown to hate listening to his barked out voice yelling all game every game, micromanaging his player's every breath. Dude's incessant need to be in control of every aspect of the game sucks the joy out of it. I recall just prior to being choked by Sprewell, Antawn Jamison answered a question about the W's poor fast breaking that seemed emblematic of his controlling ways. He relayed that he and Spree each had a side of the court to run up... that they weren't allowed to run up the other guys side.

As a Duck alum I can't think of a coach I'd be less excited about... hiring Canzano would be be about the only thing worse.

I think the Ducks will go after a younger coach who the players can relate to. What recruit is going to be excited about playing for old man PJ?

What about Michael Holton? Or our asst. Monty Williams?

A lot of recuits like Paterno. They liked Carroll. Dean Smith, Coach K, Knight.... I think age is overrated.
 
PJ is a good college coach. Not so good in the NBA level. He should find a school to call home, and stick with it.
 
What's Greg Ballard up to these days?

He played for the Ducks (and in the NBA). He was an assistant coach in the NBA and Europe. He is younger than PJC, and almost has to be less of a nutjob.

They will respond to that type of coach if they are for real. Knight (for example) was demanding of his players, but also demanding of himself. PJC is a fake. During the games, in front of an audience, he is a control freak. OTOH, I've heard from numerous sources that his own work ethic is shakey as hell. He would rather schmooze than actually work.
 
PJ's record at Seton Hall speaks volumes about his coaching ability. I am generally more impressed with coaches who perform for programs that aren't recruiting magnets. There's no doubt that Coach K or Roy Williams are terrific coaches, but they have their choice of recruits. Try selling people on playing in South Orange, NJ.

Lol, that is so far from the truth I don't know what to tell you. Gonzaga has a top 20 recruiting class every year.

Do they? In looking at your moniker I would think you feel they're a top ten team year in and year out. When I see them play their talent level is very low, overall. Certainly, Oregon is better. But he gets a lot of play from them- ala Riley at OSU. I just don't like taking small college coaches and bringing them to a more national stage with bigger recruiting expectations. We can disagree on this, and that's fine. I just don't like the fit. Besides, I doubt he'd leave the Zags for the Ducks.

That said, I think the UO job is a real plum. Loaded with young talent. A good coach can get 24 wins next year from this group. Not to mention in a new stadium...

Heytvelt, Bouldin, Daye, Downs, Gibbs were all top 100 recruits. The difference that seperates Gonzaga from most is that they find talent overseas and recruit in places like Canada that most people don't look for talent.

Kent always has been a solid recruiter, but his in game coaching is horrible. Dunigan, Humphries, Taylor, Hairston, Brooks and Ridnour were all top recruits. He's had two good years and that was only because he had multiple NBA players on his rosters.

If your saying the talent level is low, you should look at the number of NBA players that the teams have produced in the past 10 years:

Oregon: Ridnour, Jones, Hairston, Jackson, Brooks, Scales

Gonzaga: Daye, Morrison, Turiaf, Frahm, Dickau, Mahinmi

I'd say they put out about the same amount of NBA talent. Kent might have a bit better recruiting classes, but within the past 5 years I'd say they are pretty even. There are also players that Few barely lost out on, Jordan Farmar was all but signed with Gonzaga when UCLA got a transfer and he decided to stay in Cali. Deon Thompson was another guy who was almost here but bailed out for UNC at the last moment.
