Can we remake Portland back to the clean, non-graffiti on almost every street sign, lack of trash everywhere, not having to step over homeless downtown city that it once was? Portland was one of the most beautiful cities in the country. It looks like a dumbster after a windstorm now. Would love to re-make our own home as a place to start.

This has just been the perfect storm for shit to fall apart. Friend of mine works for the city planning and maintenance department. Said they have been under orders to NOT be out there dealing with the graffiti and homeless and trash......the city is taking this COVID situation VERY seriously. Said once shit starts clearing up, they can start cleaning up.

Yeah, sure... right after this whole viral pandemic situation has been dealt with.

That reminds me of today's random thought of the day: It would be cheaper to bus the homeless to Arizona for the winter than it is to provide warming shelters.

It has been happening long before that.
I use to live in Portland 15+ years ago. I'm always shocked at how much worse the city has become every time I've been back to visit.

You should spend some time in
NYC
Philly
Detroit
Miami
Boston
Chicago
Cleveland
Milwaukee
Indy
Memphis
NOLA
Minny
Houston
LA
SF
DC
Atlantic City

Just a few cities I've spent time in recently that popped into my head that Portland is 10X cleaner than.

I could go on if you want?

I've been to about half of those on your list.... Most of them are hell holes where I would not want to live.
Just because Portland is 'better' than some, doesn't make it good.

Seriously? As @tester551 said, this mess has been going on a lot longer than just since Covid. So that doesn't seem to really wash.

Is there more than one or two of those cities (maybe Memphis) that isn't run by one political party? Apparently cleaning up the environment doesn't start at home. I'm sure I'll catch hell for that....lol.

Portland is easily one of the cleanest major cities in the country. Plain and simple.

The drive down SE Powell from 50th to 80th is something out of Mad Max.

It's a trip.

We can. And it wouldn't be that hard...

Why not both? It’s like you’re saying “let’s ignore racism and clean street signs.”

I am so tired of that type of response. There is NO WHERE that I came close to implying “let’s ignore racism and clean street signs.” That is just lazy and I expect better of you. I get that it has become almost a cliche' response on social media to take something either completely out of context or attribute something to someone that they didn't come close to saying, but that is still not an excuse. Can we stick to what someone ACTUALLY says versus the ridiculous fake news type of response that is becoming so prevelant?

Very poor Eric.

Not to make this more political but cleaning up our streets, fighting against racism, stopping crime and lowering how much we pay for welfare all have the same solutions: better and more available mental healthcare, education and to a lesser extent healthcare. Not that I think medical/physical healthcare is less important it's just less valuable in solving these specific problems. Quick fixes only exacerbate the problems and other problems.

Quite right. Too often, so much effort goes into trying to fix things quickly and nothing every really changes. On top of that, the symptioms are being treaded instead of the problem....in example after example.
