TUALATIN — There’s been a curious sight at the last two Trail Blazers practices: CJ McCollum has been roaming the practice facility in Tualatin wearing two Nikes and no walking boot.

And if all goes well, that boot soon will be gone for good.

McCollum, who is recovering from a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot, said he’s optimistic he will gain clearance to ditch the walking boot “in a couple days.” Then, if all goes well next week during a medical checkup, he should be able to advance his rehabilitation work and inch one step closer to returning to the court.

“The foot’s feeling pretty good,” McCollum said. “I’m just continuing to progress. It’ll be a good sign if I have a clean X-ray.”

McCollum said he will have his foot X-rayed and examined on “Tuesday or Wednesday” of next week, which will be his first checkup since undergoing a non-operative ultrasound procedure Oct. 16 in Charlotte, N.C.

And although his rookie season has momentarily been put on pause, the No. 10 selection of the 2013 NBA draft has been involved in heavy training to stay in shape. His rehabilitation includes work in the pool, on the stationary bike and in the weight room, where he goes through a series of dynamic lifting exercises, including lunges and squats designed to “build stability.”

“It starts from the feet and goes all the way up to the core and back,” McCollum said. “The lifts are pretty intense and upbeat, so you’re breaking a good sweat in there. Working hard. But you can only do so much without running up and down the court. I’m just trying to take advantage of all the other opportunities.”

Assuming he gets clearance to ditch the boot permanently, McCollum said his next opportunity will come this weekend, when he is allowed to start working out on the elliptical machine.

Even if next week’s X-rays show no setbacks, McCollum does not expect doctors to give him a possible return date, so it remains unclear when he will resume basketball activities full-time and rejoin practice. In the meantime, he’s slowly integrating basketball work into his daily work.

Thursday afternoon during practice, McCollum shot left-handed free throws and gently worked on his finishes around the basket in an effort to improve his left hand. He also did some calf raises, balancing exercises, resistance training and dribbling without the walking boot that he’s been forced to wear since Oct. 5, when he fractured the bone in his left foot during a fluke practice incident.

“Did some stuff today off two feet, just to kind of see what it feels like,” McCollum said. “Just taking baby steps to work my way back.”

And the biggest baby step so far could come this weekend, when he is allowed to ditch that cumbersome boot and move on with his rehabilitation.

Asked if it would be liberating, McCollum said, “You have no idea.”

I believe they should take it slow with him. If I'm not mistaken Martell Webster had the same injury and came back to soon. Missed the rest of the season.

Yeah its the job of our medical staff to hold him back if there is an elevated risk of re-injury. Hopefully they are competent at this.

Haven't we seen this movie already staring Elliot Williams?

Wow, it's been just 34 days since he got the fracture!

Yup - I'd add at least 2 weeks on top of what the medical experts say. Absolutely no reason to rush this guy back. And even if it's not rushing, I think the benefits of holding him back outweigh the risks of bringing him back "on time".

No. Elliot Williams never starred in this type of role.

You've been beefing about CJ and Matthews for quite some time. The funny thing is you want to bring in injury prone players to replace them. :maris61:

Yeah he needs to take it slow. If the x-ray does come back clean, then maybe another 4 weeks at the soonest? I just don't have my hopes up that it is all that simple.

It will be interesting to see what they do with CJ when he does get the green light. I'm not sure where he would fit in right now. Wes is playing well. Mo must be in the game with Dame is out. The only option would be for some SG minutes next to Dame.

Question: if OKC would do this, would you trade CJ for Steven Adams now? I think CJ is the better player, but I'm not sure where he is going to get minutes and Adams sure would look good sharing time with RoLo.

Three to four weeks is a reasonable amount of time for that injury to heal, at least to the point of resuming light activity.

I don't know anything about Adams (or CJ, really) - but if they throw in Lamb I would. We could add Leonard, Barton or Claver if needed. Ha.

Hey man, what are you some kind of doctor? None of us are doctors, so we know better.

I think extra value might have to come from Portland (Meyers?) He's getting six rebounds and almost one block in 17 minutes with a PER of 17. Mostly a defensive guy.

Hypothetically it is an interesting question. I think CJ would fit in very well with Westbrook and Durant. If CJ came back and showed that he is healthy and played well, they would be all over that.

I just hope they don't rush him back. He has a long career ahead of him, no reason to rush him for this season. That said, I'll trust the experts.

That is what I was thinking. However, with Perkins at center, they may prefer to keep Adams and get some other help at guard. I think Portland would have more to gain than OKC.

I don't think so when you look at the fact that the thunder have no real "scoring threat" besides Westbrook/Durant. CJ would be the type of player they would love who can stretch the floor, hit the 3, and supposedly create his own shot. Jackson has shown some improvements but he is very inconsistent and he isn't much of a 3 shooter at all. He is more of a Westbrook clone when they need more of a Jason Terry like clone.

Isn't out lovely how we're wishing to trade the 11th and 10th picks (respectively) in the last two drafts for the two 12th picks in those same drafts...?

Yes, but part of that is that Adams was an unknown quantity. It's still early, but he seems to be showing he can rebound and play defense. I think the team also expected Meyers to be more productive this year, so Adams didn't make as much sense. Meyers lack of significant improvement and Adams ability contribute have cleared up the picture a bit.

Damn! I never noticed that in the picture. That's downright creepy.

#Blazers CJ McCollum did have his x-ray done today but doctors in North Carolina wont see it until tomorrow.

PLEASE PLEASE DON'T COMPARE HIM TO MARTELL WEBSTER!!

I have much higher hopes for the kid.

Well.... Webster is a legit NBA player. Lead the Wiz tonight with 21 and 10. CJ doesn't project to ever be as good of a defender either.
