I considered just making a post in the Around the NBA thread, but I think I might as well make a thread and see if it sticks. Feel free to drop any names as well.

Everyone is going crazy about Chauncey. I don’t see a point to dropping him right in the middle of a losing season. Going into the summer though, I do really hope we look into bringing someone new. I am staunchly against going backwards and bringing in someone like Bud. Some doofus on Reddit really suggested Adelman, like…what? Vanderpools been a name for a long while, no traction, so ehh. Becky? I guess, but who knows if there is any ill will from the last time.

I really want to bring in one of these younger guys. I don’t really know much about what goes into bringing in a new coach, and I’m not going to pretend that I do, but I’ll offer up some reasons for a personal favorite that I hope we explore: Jordi Hernandez.

Coaching Pedigree:
- since last summer, he has been serving as the head coach of team USA. Similar to how I’d like Batum back if we draft one or two French rookies with Rupert, I think it would be good for Shae to have someone who will eventually be coaching him when he plays for his home country. Team Canada, like France, just keeps getting deeper and deeper with talent

- currently associate head coach for the Kings, last two seasons. We’re all aware of the turnaround Sac had last season. They are continuing that success in his year 2.

- before that, he spend 5-6 seasons as an assistant coach for the Nuggets. Been there since Jokic’s sophomore season I believe. Who really knows if Jordi had any hand in the Nuggets’ success, but he’s shown to have a hand with two recently-successful franchises.

- between ‘09-‘14, he worked between Cavs’ player development department and head coach of their GL team. So he was there for part of Lebron’s Cavs run.

In Conclusion:

I think he’s going to be a coach very soon. He was a finalist for the Suns job. If there are better candidates, pick them. But I’m hoping we at least take a look at him.

how long does Billups have left on his contract?
So he’ll be done with year 3/5 at the end of the season. Year 5 is a team option, so we would be letting him go a year earlier than he was going to be here for.

Originally, I was fine with him finishing year 4 and deciding on year 5. But this point, if there’s a good candidate out there, I would want to pursue them. No point letting someone get away, if Jody can’t stomach paying a second coach for ONE season, I’d be sick asf.

Qyntel Woods?

barfo
Is he just a name? Lol. I don’t see any coaching history. Saw he was drafted by us in ‘02 though, so I’m left to assume he’d just be a familar face to older Blazers fans?

Well I’m too young to know who he is, so he could be as raw at coaching as Chauncey, but he’s wasn’t as well known as a player? Yeah, I’m not jumping up and down about this lol.

Gonna have to be another rookie young and up and coming type guy. Just can’t see a real experienced coach wanting to come here?

I saw Adelman at Safeway about 5 years ago. He's definately retired, let the man enjoy it. Rick was optimizing which salad dressing will apply the best coverage for that evening. That's all the X's and O's he needs anymore.

He's not in the greatest of health and is definitely done coaching.

HOWEVER.....

I would take a serious look at his son, Nuggets Asst Coach David Adelman.

I like Adelman. He’s been Malone’s lead assistant going on 2 years and is kinda like our Jonah Herscu. Constantly pulling the head coach aside and bringing something to his attention

Hmm, I’ll have to look into him. Wow, if Adelman and Fernandez both land HC jobs this summer, Mike Malone will have the start of a mini coaching tree. Never really thought he’d be good enough to ever have one going back to his time in Sacramento lol.

These are the names I like though. I imagine he’s probably an analytics guy, seems like all these younger coaches are. Definitely a family name that older Portland folk would get behind. Dudes like me who didn’t ever see Rick Adelman coach at least know the name while growing up in Portland.

Me neither. Donovan had an extensive career in college, but if he got hired this summer, I’d want ZERO parts of him.

Coach Bud. This team needs a proper offensive system.

So who’s our Giannis? Or are we now going to look like that Hawks team that won like 60 games and gets smacked off by a Lebron-tier player in the playoffs as a #1 seed? Bud is an old timer.

In the time between when we fire Billups and hire a new coach, I hope we improve the roster and ownership considerably. Without those two things happening, we won't be a playoff team.

Don’t think the point of bringing in a new coach would be to just magically become a playoff team. It’s all about building good habits with the young guys, establishing a sustainable offensive and defensive plan, letting the young guys adapt to it and get better in it. Those who improve immensely just by virtue of knowing the game plan better might see massive increase in opportunity over time, even if they aren’t as talented as other guys.

Michael Malone joined the Nuggets team where their previous record was 30-52. Brad Stevens’ first year with Boston was 25-57. I’m sure there are more examples.

Ownership will not change until the expansion happens, almost guaranteed. Why would Jody give up that profit share? I’m pretty sure all owners of the current 30 teams get something like that when the 2 expansion teams are added.

I kind of think Chauncey and Joe are joined at the hip. If Chauncey eats chili, Joe farts. I could see Jodie giving both the ax at the end of the season to deflect public attention away from her tepid ownership. I don’t think anyone gets canned before the end of the year because there’s no incentive to win anyway.

Edit: Oops, wrong thread. Could a mod move this to one of Rasta’s Chauncey threads? Your choice which one.

I'm not a huge Billups guy, so I don't really care if they fire him. I also don't expect Jody to sell the team anytime soon. Though I don't know that she's waiting for the value of the franchise to go up if reports are true that she doesn't receive any money from selling the team.

I have very little confidence the organization is position to identify and obtain a high quality coach. I think they're more likely to set a reputation around the league of being mismanaged and a place where elite coaches shouldn't consider.

Jordi Fernandez, please.

Qyntel Woods, lol... "Pssst, Hey, Scoot. Check out my pitbull, cuh. You need to get you one, too."

Jordi certainly sounds like the hot name right now. My vibe of what his reputation right now currently is what Udoka’s was prior to his move to Boston. Lot of people, including some in this forum, thought he was going to be Pop’s successor in SA.

Sam Cassell?
Heard the name for a long time. Wondering why he’s never gotten a shot.

Makes me wonder. I get the same reaction to Sam Cassell when someone mentions David Vanderpool. Outside of a long stint as our assistant, he was associate HC for a terrible Wolves team, then def coordinator, then an assistant for Brooklyn a couple years ago. Don’t even know where he is now.

Don’t really know what to make of Cassell. Outside of being an assistant for those John Wall teams, he followed Doc basically his entire career to LA then Philly, assistant with the Celtics right now. So man has seen a lot of playoff flameouts in his career lol. Idk, he’d be a new name I guess.

So…a bunch of conjecture? Gotcha. This claim seems incredibly baseless, with all due respect.

You’re speaking strictly of the Chauncey hire. Fine, whatever. It’s over and done with. But Stotts was not a bad hire. We had an AS PF and Stotts recently won a championship with a AS PF that played similarly to Aldridge. The idea behind it was very reasonable.

For the record, I see waaaayy too much Cronin dick riding on this forum for me to think that many of you guys actually think we’re mismanaged. It has nothing to do with why elite coaches wouldn’t want to come here. Elite coaches don’t want to coach bad teams. Young coaches that have proved nothing still have that fire even when their team sucks because they haven’t proved anything. Elite coaches who have gone through that rarely have the patience because unless you were handed a ready-to-compete team like Tyron Lue, Nick Nurse, Ime Udoka, you’ve already gone through that losing period earlier in your career. I suspect someone like Michael Malone will likely never coach a bad team again. Even if he were fired by the Nuggets one day, the team that hires him will be a playoff team hoping his championship experience puts them over the top.

It’s like the real world. Anyone new in the work force will take whatever comes their way. Anyone who’s proven anything in their career will have much more options after 5-10 years experience.

Vernon Maxwell (see correction below) charged off the court, up into the stands and punched a fan (I believe, in Portland).

*Edit*, Sam Cassel didn't. It was Vernon Maxwell. Thanks @Pinwheel1
