Game Thread College Football Week 1!

Welcome to our community

Be a part of something great, join today!

Great win for UCLA. It ain't gonna be easy for the Ducks. Again Brown Jr., fair or not, Has to play great for the Ducks to get to where they want to go.

Thank god for Mexico!

This morning I was reading ESPN.com, reading the pregame coverage on the Duck game. I noticed the ad for ticket prices and.... scored 2 tickets, 50 yard line, row 23 for $40 each!

Sucked the coffee down, jumped in the shower, and Mrs SPD and I are on our way to Eugene!

Get down there, find parking, go to Autzen and... PROOF OF VACCINATION REQUIRED.

FFFFFUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKKK! FFFFFFUUUUUUUCCCCCCKKKKK!

We forgot our fucking vaccination cards. Son of a biatch!

So we step out of line, I'm cussing at myself, when....

I remember I took pictures of our vaccination cards for our Mexico trip last May.

OH THANK GOD!

Anyway, great seats!

All right game but it was at least a win!

Biggest problem for some fucking reason Autzen only had 4 concession stands up. Why in the hell they had so few? The lines were insane.

Great picks. Air looks awful, Damn. Not as bad as last year, but not good. I do miss Ubering before, and after the games. I had my best days, moneywise on gameday in the football season. I lived 10 minutes from Autzen. I would drop off, go home watch game, then head back late in 4th. Thought it would be packed though after last year. Thanks Sly.

The air cleared at halftime.

The new scoreboard was nice! It's crazy all the improvements they've done around Autzen over the years.
I'd like to see the North side redone to look like the Southside. Bring Capacity to around 75,000. If Coach gets the team to the SEC level he plans for, they will need that extra seating.

The U of O Campus is amazing. I remember going to the Olympic Trials in 1980. Then i moved there in '19. Totally blew me away. Even the 2 & a half years i was there, a lot got built. Hayward, Knight Science, & the new dorms across from Hayward.

to be fair, before Covid derailed college football last year, in Cristobal's 2nd season he led the Ducks to a 12-2 record, and their 2 losses were by 6, at Auburn, and 3, at ASU. They clobbered heavily favored Utah in the Pac-12 championship game and beat favored Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl. And that season, and especially in the games against USC, Washington, Utah and Wisconsin, Cristobal got a lot of praise for his coaching then. He's also coached Oregon to 2 consecutive Pac-12 championships

today, there were lots of problems. But there is also some small glimmers to0. To start with, the adage about college football is that teams improve the most between their 1st and 2nd games. This was Fresno's 2nd game and they won their first game 45-0. They are also a senior-heavy team. They's aren't a typical non-conference patsy

as for the Duck D, keep in mind this was the first game for the new Defensive Coordinator. The two projected Duck CB's got suspended a couple of weeks ago. Their all-American 'DE' was injured in the 1st Q as well as their starting MLB. The Ducks played a lot of freshman on defense today, again, against a team with a game already under their belt

I think there is some mythology build up around Chip Kelly. What he accomplished at Oregon was mainly with Bellotti recruits. He was innovative as hell, but he caught lightning in a bottle. He sure as hell has not looked like a great coach at UCLA...or in the NFL for that matter. Helfirch was a dud, but was able to do the same thing Kelly did in his 2nd season...take a team of talent he didn't recruit to the National Championship game. Taggart was a snake. Personally, if I could take any Oregon coach from the last 20 years, I'd take Bellotti as a coach with Cristobal as recruiting coordinator. But I'm not ready to write Cristobal off as a head coach yet. He does need good coordinators though

ive got the deciding factor for you. I realized yesterday Cristobal aNd Olshey look alike.

The Fresno State QB (that transferred from WA) looked better than the Fuskies qb.

for the first half yesterday, he looked better than the Duck QB too

He had 220 yards passing in the first half, but only 78 in the second half on lousy efficiency. And the Duck running game got rolling in the 2nd half. Those two factors actually point to some good coaching adjustments at halftime. If Cristobal and staff were as bad at coaching as many claim, those adjustments wouldn't have been made

and from what I saw of Fresno, they are a much better team than credited before the game. Well coached and disciplined. They aren't Ohio State though. Unless the Ducks make massive improvements on both sides of the ball, they will get boat-raced next weekend

It's always a gamble playing a top 5 team very early in the season.
If the Ducks go into the Shoe and win they will benefit greatly! Even if they play a solid game they stay put. If they get beat? Everyone calls the Pac 12 weak.
If Ohio wins they hold serve. If they lose that game though they will probably not live it down this year.
Big game next weekend for sure. Lots on the line for both teams.

if the Ducks had Justin Herbert, as a senior, as the QB, they'd have a great shot at winning. Or Mariotta as a senior. Or Vernon Adams. But with Anthony Brown? He was way too inconsistent yesterday even though he looked much better in the final 33 minutes of the game. He's a good runner, but I can't see OSU respecting the Duck passing game enough to not simply load up the line of scrimmage. And if the Ducks can't generate a running game, they'll be in lots of trouble

Actually i was thinking he will need to scramble. College football is all about having a mobile QB. I always though Herbert held them back a bit.

what held Herbert back was having 3 different offensive coordinators, 3 different offensive systems, and 3 different head coaches in his first 3 years as starter. Also, one legitimate criticism of Cristobal may be that he has been too stubborn about the Ducks creating an identity as a physical smash-mouth team in the trenches. That may have limited offensive imagination while creating easy to spot tendencies

Herbert sure as hell didn't hold the Chargers back last season

Herbert always was considered a good NFL prospect.
College and NFL are different games.
Though i agree there was plenty holding Herbert back as you pointed out.

You already know i can come up with 5 times as many people who give opinions that Justin Herbert had a game that would translate into the NFL.
Why are you going here?

GA Bulldogs looked solid!!

Klatt was so wrong on this. He likes guys like himself. So-so arm strength, but smart. Thing is, in the NFL, those guys end up being back up, spot starting, MEH QB's. Klatt is from Colorado, and for a state that had a QB (Elway) with arguably , the greatest cannon ever, these former football guys goo goo over these noodle arm ,cerebral, signal callers. Lock has the whole package in my opinion, but hasn't had the development time due to Covid. But all these local football experts, most of them former players, Klatt, Schlereth, Chad Brown, Stokley, and on & on feel Bridgewater should start. Many of these same guys, including Louis Riddick of ESPN, salivated over Tua, and Poopood Herbert. Mindboggling. On Herbert Colin had it right. If the Bills went with the same strategy as the Broncos with their young, mistake-prone, in need of further development , QB, Josh Allen wouldn't have been allowed to show he was worthy of being in the MVP discussion. Development is everything. Really happy for Justin.

the ghost of Willie Taggart will haunt FSU for a long time
100%. I love running into people here in Tallahassee and telling them I'm an Oregon fan. They usually just open their mouths, dumbfounded, and no words come out. It is hilarious. And I wasn't joking. I could hear the crowd groan while I was taking my dogs out for a bathroom break.
