Now that Google has given up on expanding Fiber, looks like Comcast is going to send more bullshit our way. Go over the cap and you will incur a $10 charge for an additional data block of 50GB. Fairly easy to exceed the limit if you live in a household with multiple streamers/gamers and that fucking sucks. Want unlimited data? Pay the assholes an additional $50 per month.

Sigh.
 
And Comcast owns NBC Universal and Telemundo. Guess what comes next....
 
...my favorite Comcast shenanigan recently was when they tried to mysteriously charge a $14.99 fee for a "Video Self Install Kit"? WTF! The whole point of self installation is to save both parties money by not having a tech visit on-site :dunno:
 
This explains why my no contract deal went up $80 bucks, then when I called in they roped me into a 2 year deal to get it back down. This new system is fucked, you can get charged up to $200 extra one month, unless you proactively watch during the grace months and set up alerts. Based on my past usage though we are still only using about 500gb, but I just got a 4k TV and one of our teenagers isnt in our house currently.

1TB is about 10,000 minutes of video streaming, enough for streaming all day (24 hours) for about 7 days. Or streaming video for 8 hours a day for ~20 days.

I've had both frontier and time warner cable. Neither have data caps and both have 100mbit+ speed.

We pay Comcast $60 for our internet....... CenturyLink just contacted us about $20 a month for 2 years. Don't know anything about this, CenturyLink any good?

I got it, coupled with Comcast TV. No issues over a number of years. I only use it for Netflix and Internet however so not demanding much from it.

4 of us here at the house, two kids. Biggest usage would be Netflix or streaming movies and music on our AppleTV.
 
This just guarantees that I will never go back to Comcast.... I can't even fathom how data caps are a thing in 2016.

It's bad enough that we have to deal with this crap with our phones....

I like that its cheap, and never really goes up in price. Don't notice any difference, although we don't tax it much.
 
August 2016 - Google Fiber decides they're not going to build in Portland.

October 2016 - Comcast rolls out data caps in Oregon.

I hate this company. This is their answer to cord cutters. They're losing revenue on television packages, so they're going to double their prices on internet. Such a shit company.

Not everyone. By some stroke of luck, I've been able to keep my unlimited data through Verizon for years now. You can still buy them on ebay, but it'll cost you about 500 bucks, and there's no guarantee they will transfer the plan.

Basically there are two ways to look at this.

By making datacaps, it discourages streaming and "cutting the cord".

The other thing it does is they'll try to get around Net Neutrality regulations and have "preferred" content that will not count against your data cap.

I'm 100% in favor of city utility fiber internet services. The internet is not something that should be held over our heads. The world operates around the web now, and these companies are using that to price gouge. You shouldn't be able to be a utility provider AND a content provider. It's a clear conflict of interest.

I doubt network data for playing games is that much. Video and big file downloads are by far the most network intensive things people do. Maybe file sharing via torrent, too.

As I posted earlier, the cap is used up with about 8 hours a day of Netflix HD for 20 days.

Read the article. They have a WWW page that will tell you how much data you're using.

Here's a few games and streaming a video, for an hour, to give you an idea:
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall – 194.52MB
  • Battlefield 4 – 66.88MB
  • FIFA 14 – 26.7MB
  • Streaming via Twitch (Best quality) – 781.38MB (Estimated Upload bandwidth ONLY)
1TB is 1,000,000MB.

You could play 5,000 hours of Killzone in a month to use the 1TB. That's 208 days' worth. Or you could have 10 people playing that game 24/7 and be under the cap.

Netflix uses 3GB/hour for best quality HD.

1TB is 1000GB. So the cap is 333 hours of Netflix per month. That's 13.8 days of 24/7 streaming.

The guys they're really going after are the UHD/4K streaming guys. That's 7GB/hour for best quality on Netflix.

5.9 days of 24/7 streaming. 18 days of 8 hours per day.

But 8 hours a day is a lot of TV...
 
Lol. Ive averaged about 100GB per month.

So i dont see myself going anywhere near the cap.

That includes me playing online games and streaming.
 
I get that most people don't approach the limit currently, but you have to look at this down the road.

As televisions advance, the quality of video files will advance with them. Data usage will increase. It's extremely short sighted to only look at what your present usage is, and say "doesn't bother me! I'm nowhere near that number!"

If we don't nip this kind of thinking in the bud, it will only get worse. It doesn't cost the ISPs anything extra for usage. Data isn't a finite resource. It's not something that can be used up.

How are you going to nip it in the butt?

The only way you really can is to go to centurylink or frontier or whatever other company offers internet. So do that then.

I'm already doing that. I have Frontier. I'm encouraging others to do the same. The only way you nullify this practice is by dropping Comcast. If their profits go down, they will drop this stupid strategy.

Hey, I'm a member of the Trail Blazers' official online forum! Why don't the Blazers do something about these Comcast data caps on our behalf? What's the good of being the official forum of a team whose TV rights are owned by Comcast if we have to pay Comcast extra for access to that forum?!

Frontier wants to charge me $70/month just for internet though. So i would rather not.
