Looks like the Florida Skies around Tampa Bay this AM, Overcast, getting dark, with very few bright spots.

No offense to the floridians on the board, but isn't that every day with the getting overcast, threat of rain thing?

...pretty much...water on both sides, and the clouds just build up with moisture till they can't hold it anymore...I believe that Fla also has more lightning strikes than any other state.

July, August, and into September the heavy rains come and they can be doozies. I seen worse in Viet Nam & Korea. Lighning capital of the world, stuff is pretty but can be very deadly, if you are at the beach and you see the clouds start rolling in you'd best be for getting the hell out of Dodge.

Many years ago I lived in West palm beach for a while & one day my kids wanted to go swimming but it was raining out. My in-laws lived in Delray beach & they suggested we go there since it was very sunny where they were, Well, by the time my kids got down to the pool it began to rain in Delray beach. So we headed back home. We were driving with the sun in front of us but every time we stopped at a light we could hear the rain hitting the car from behind us. Drove further into the sun & again at every light the rain caught up with us. Needless to say it literally followed us back to West palm beach. It was the strangest thing I've ever seen. Yeah Steve Florida is a weird state when it comes to rain.

...funny thing about Fla...I was born in Jax and out of all the years I lived in the state (and I still have a house outside Orlando)...I have NEVER been to the West Coast. (the Keys don't count)

My son lives in Kissimmee. Florida is a great place to visit but I'll never live there again.

My first time here was to West Palm back in the fifties as a young kid. My Aunt and Uncle made a fortune in that area designing, building, and interior decorating houses. That was when all the "Yankees" were moving down in droves and talking over the area. I've been all over the state like the Panhandle best but when I came here in '86 to stay there was no work up there.

wouldn't be surprised by that... only possible exception would be somewhere in Tornado Alley...

...oh yeah, I know where that's at...and yeah, when I was a kid it was entirely different down there. Now when I do go down there, I can't wait to leave and get away from the traffic.

West coast or west coast of Florida? My grandparents (well, grandma now) lived in Spring Hill and I've visited the Gulf numerous times... Also have spent time in Cali, but wouldn't live in either location...

If I could find a job, I'd move to Antartica... I hate this blasted heat...

Definitely of the US... found this... while it is 3 years old, it still has Florida #1...

http://www.weather.com/outlook/weather-news/news/articles/lightning-prone-states_2011-03-14

No. 5 (tie) South Carolina/Oklahoma: 14.6 strikes per square mile
No. 4 Alabama: 15.9 strikes per square mile
No. 3 Mississippi: 18.0 strikes per square mile
No. 2 Louisiana: 20.3 strikes per square mile
No.1 Florida: 25.3 strikes per square mile

According to http://geology.com/articles/lightning-map.shtml
The area on earth with the highest lightning activity is located over the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa. This area has thunderstorms all year round as a result of moisture-laden air masses from the Atlantic Ocean encountering mountains.

And Kifuka has the highest frequency for a city/village (located in the Congo) http://www.wondermondo.com/Countries/Af/CongoDR/SudKivu/Kifuka.htm average 158 lightning strikes/square kilometer annually...

To put it into perspective graphically...

San Diego, one of my favorite places, graduated from high school there. The move "American Grafitti" though set in Northern California was pretty much spot on with the actual times. Went back there twice still liked it and was considering living there after my Service Time was up. Glad I did not make that move given the cost of living and taxes. I've been thinking about going back for a visit sponge off the relatives for a couple weeks.

Spent an entire summer out there as well as 2 business trips and would NEVER be able to live there... for both the lack of seasons as well as financially...

...Mom said SD was beautiful...said it hardly ever rained.

The climate is considered one of the overall best if not the best. Very dry at times you'd wake up and run to the sink and drink 5 gallons of water. I lived in North Park then to Pacific Beach, very cool lived within walking distance of Mission Bay Beach and Pacific Beach itself. Back then Ocean Beach had a pretty cool amusement park so we'd cruise up there. The old man had a '57 Sudebaker Silver Hawk then wish I did not get to drive often but when so doing I was king of the road. Did an 8 month reclassification stint at Fort MacArthur in '74 (San Pedro) und used to go down quite frequently.

^^^ I remember you talking about the Silver Hawk...pretty cool car.

The old mans was white over powder blue, 289 4BBl, dual exhausts, with glass packs. I used to weekly wash, monthly polish the chrome, wax twice a year to earn my drive time but it was damn well worth it.

It is fairly consistent temperature with low rain & humidity which is why it's looked upon so favorably... I get that... Me, I need snow... I need the autumnal colors... I need spring.... I could very easily do without summer, but San Diego doesn't get that hot...

If memory serves, the summer I spent in San Diego... the "worst" day out there which had all the locals complaining about how bad it was.... well, it was 88 degrees and 25% humidity... It was 104 that day and about 95% humidity in NJ that day... so they didn't know how good they had it that day...

I think the entire summer I was out there, it was never below 75 and never above 88... I don't think it rained even an hour total in 3 months... June had the typical June-Gloom...

But like I said, I need seasons... I need winter...

I'm familiar with winters as well. Born in New Jersey, had relatives in Vermont & Massachusetts. Coming up I lived in Pa, NJ, Ohio, prior to my first "warm climate state. After I joined the Army Viet Nam excepted I froze my a@@ off in Hokkaido, Korea, and Germany. Rootie, Tootie, Field Duty living in tents from GP tiny to GP Large is not fun. Shoveled my a@@ off at Fort Devens Mass, Carlisle Barracks Pa, Frederick Maryland and to a lesser degree in Norfolk Va. and Fort Myer. People ask me if I ever went camping. yes I did will I do it anymore hell no. People ask me if I ever went 4 wheeling yes I did, M-38, Mi51, M35 Multifuel. Will I go today hell no. Did I find the foliage change beautiful yes I did, western Mass is beautiful in autumn. Would I go back to Mass hell no. I remember stopping in Alaska enroute to the Far East in the month of May beautiful country but no thank you. Remember riding the liberty boats in Norfolk in winter, never again. The squeeze is originally from New Hampshire and she wants to go back for a visit, that is fine with me as long as it isn't past Oct 31.
