11/3 - Blazer Courtside Monday

November 4, 2008, D69 —

Courtside Monday Night
6PM PST
Hosts: Mike Barratt, Mike Rice, Brian Wheeler
courtside@blazers.com

Next week will be on Tuesday, Nov 11th for Courtside due to Monday’s game.

Summary
Nate McMillian interview – Wants the team to be aggressive. Was hoping for Sunday, but it will be another week before Oden can play in a game. Batum will start in Utah game.
Henry Abbott interview – Thinks Detroit got the better end of the trade of Iverson for Billups. Does think it makes Denver a playoff team now. David Thorp thinks Oden may never become a reliable contributor with his injuries. Once one big trade happens, other GMs start talking.
Jerry Schemmel – Denver announcer - interview – thinks trade was good for Denver and makes them a legit playoff team. George Karl can go back to coaching a regular back court.
Ask Confucius (aka Mike Rice) – Kirk Hinrich will be traded before November 15th. Travis Outlaw as a Blazer after Dec. 1st is cloudy. Batum will be in the top 4 for votes for ROY. Jerryd Bayless very close to be a starter before the end of the season. Greg will not play until the third game of the road trip.
Mike Rice – no to Mike Conley & Jason Kidd (too young and too old). Kirk Hinrich for Travis Outlaw? Hinrich would be closer to what the Blazers are looking for.
First 18 games – 6 to 7 wins
More? – Good comments on Batum, blazer practices, Greg Oden. Also, Maurice is getting better from his unknown virus.

If that's really the way the Blazers are heading, looks like another lottery year for sure.

Very cool. Thanks for passing that on. As a Redskins fan, I made the poor decision to watch my team get pummeled by the Steelers rather than listen to the broadcast.

One thing I heard during the broadcast that was encouraging to me was that Rice said that the avulsion was on top of the foot (not on the ankle). So it is not a load bearing thing to me. He isn't going to have stability issues, merely pain issues.

EDIT: Here is the summary from the website on the Oden talk

Courtside Monday Night said:
Greg Oden – comments
(BW) – Did you see Shaq’s comments that he beat up on the center coming out of the NBA and Shaq fully expects the young centers to beat up on him. What goes around, comes around. He doesn’t think it will be all that big of a deal if Greg has a good game against Shaq.
(MR) – (email from a fan (i.e. Joe) doesn’t want Rice to talk up Greg so much and jinx him). Joe thinks we got Kwame Brown. When Oden is ready he is going to terriorize the West, not right away, but give him time. Greg is going to be special.
(MR) – The injury is on the top of his foot and it takes longer to heal.
(BW) – (email on whether it would be better to have Oden come off the bench) No, because it will take Greg longer, because he is then going up against the backup center. You want him to go up against the best to learn faster.
(MR) – Greg will be a future all-star. He is not a baby or Kwame Brown. Let him find out who he can scare or who will stand up against him.
(MB) – Playing to not to get hurt is a bad way. Greg has seen that as at the beginning of fall camp he was being way too cautious and was telling Mike he just want to get this last practice out of the way and step onto the court and he will be fine. So we saw what happened when Greg was being too careful.
(MR) – In Monday practice, Greg was feeling great and can’t wait to get into practice. They monitor Greg’s feeling every day and see how he is doing and that’s got to be a lot of pressure on that young kid.
(MR) – Oden’s injuries is bothering him more than anybody realizes. He doesn’t want to be considered an injury prone player.
