A Red state (Tenn.) actually came up with a good idea.

Under the proposed law, a defendant convicted of vehicular homicide would be on the hook for child support to their victim's minor children. Imagine that - a law that actually helps somebody instead of being cruel and bullying.

The only thing is they would be in prison and wouldn't be able to pay anything.

Why only vehicular homicide? Why not for murder?

This is truly sick. We should all abhor this law. Forcing child support onto someone who isn't related to the child. That isn't right in my book. I would have to wonder if it would even be legal to do.

Our government forces it's own citizens into poverty, which makes drug and alcohol abuse rise. Then throws it's money at militarizing our police force instead of into preventative services like metal health care. We should blame our government for not caring about it's own people. Instead we only seem to blame the aftermath of their faults and failures.

This almost 100% my exact stance on this.

I don't know if you are serious, but I 100% disagree. Our current system is overwhelmingly based on punishment/revenge - and it has been getting steadily worse. I firmly believe that more emphasis needs to be placed on victim restitution and less on vindictive, lock 'em up, politics driven policies.

Keep in mind "homicide" does not mean "murder". Like manslaughter, vehicular homicide can mean probation, house arrest, work release, etc. Even if you go to jail, the sentence may be measured in months.
