The Crusaders had a dream start to life at their new Nelson home as they battered the Waratahs 33-18 at Trafalgar Park on Friday night.

The New South Wales outfit were the form side of Super Rugby after two rounds but they struggled without injured fly-half Berrick Barnes and the hosts took advantage of some slack tackling to bring the Australians down to earth.

The visitors started the stronger, successfully applying pressure on the Crusaders' ball-players and were rewarded with early tries to Tom Carter and standout performer Luke Burgess.

But the Crusaders, backed by a sell-out 10,500 crowd in their first fixture since the devastating Christchurch earthquake, stayed in touch through the boot of Dan Carter, who would finish with 18 points. They then managed to turn the tide midway through the first-half and their brilliant offloading and support play on the counter-attack proved damaging as the Waratahs' missed-tackle count piled up.
