For half a season, not even, his age wouldn't play into it. If you're talking about re-signing him for 3 more years, then yeah.
So why sacrifice the future for a guy that wont even come close to putting us into the legit cup contender discussion.

You really want to give up young assets for less than 1/2 a season of Dan Boyle? That is exactly what we should NOT be doing.
Add in the fact that what he brings isn't our biggest need (another scoring winger) OR our 2nd biggest need (a physical dman), and I don't think a Boyle deal makes any sense for us.
Our PP is 6 or 7 in the league. Why do we need Boyle?

Yes. The power play is not only good I think its getting better.
Winger please first and would prefer not a rental

Because I still don't think they have the blueline offense they need, so why not take it to another level if you can get him for DZ, prospect, pick? Kristo is a solid prospect but there's no guarantee he has a spot in the next year or two. Boyle would open things up that much more offensively. I agree wholeheartedly they also need a winger.
Put yourself in the Sharks shoes. Trade a key piece of your blueline when you are yet again trying to find a way to get to the cup (everyone should know their trials and tribulations with this pursuit the past decade) for DZ, and prospect who most say wont cut it at the NHL level, and a draft pick???? Heads would roll if that move was made. Makes absolutely no sense at all for them.

True Mig, which is why it's probably unlikely, unless they got an above average return, though being a UFA you'd think it would cost a team less. Our problem right now is we don't have alot to give up in a trade since DZ has lost some value, and not really any high end can't miss prospects in the system, which you wouldn't give for a rental anyway. Other teams would probably be able to offer more if he truly was available. I think Kristo will eventually play in the NHL, but i'm not sure it happens here.

Okay let's answer the questions.
1. I know that is what you think, but since our PP is top 7 in the league at the moment I don't think you are correct in your thinking here. Sure we could always use another scoring dman, but I don't think we need blueline O as one of our biggest needs.
2. Boyle's cap hit is large. We don't have much room. Yes the pro-rated share of his hit around the trade DL is much smaller, but we still add money in that deal, and by doing so hurt our chances to make a deal for one of our two biggest needs.
3. I don't want a quick fix move. I would deal the guys you mention, but I rather do it for someone signed for at least next season OR at the very least for someone who fills our biggest needs, which Boyle does not.
That's my take on your questions.

It's in the top 10 now, but I still don't see the dmen adding much to the PP, or scoring in general. Most of the points on the pp come from down low, they don't have anyone who scares teams from the blueline, in terms of movement and passing. I just think if we're serious about making any kind of run with this group, beating Boston/Pitt or beyond, they need that element to get them there. It's possible that would hinder them cap wise with adding a forward, but I think it's almost as important. It's a quick fix move, but if you can piece together enough expendable elements to get him I think it's worth it.

Maybe it's me but how many times do you see our dmen get the puck in the offensive zone and think "please make the right play, don't turn it over or shoot it into someones leg". Just think how much better Nash, Kreider etc. would be with someone like that threating to blast away(on net), they'd be open alot more.

I think the bigger move(s) to beat those teams are adding a scoring winger AND adding a physical dman, not an offensive dman. A physical dman is a bigger need in my humble opinion.
McDonagh, Girardi, Staal, and MDZ can keep teams honest enough where we don't need a big offensive dman.
Not saying we have no need at all, but I just think we clearly have bigger needs. And with our limited assets and cap space, we may only get one shot. I don't think that should be an offensive dman.

And to me Boyle is not that guy. You really want to rent Dan Boyle. I do not.

That's the thing though, just keeping teams honest dosen't take you further than a round or two tops. Getting a difference maker can make you a totally different team. Technically, Staal and Girardi are defensive types so they should be the physical dmen we're looking for, so now you're looking to add someone on top of them who probably dosen't add much offense. It's covering up for something that should already be happening. We certainly agree on the need for another good winger. I thought a Fleischmann/Gilbert deal could help both areas.

We'll agree to disagree on this. I see no need for a rental quick fix player like Boyle, who maybe solves our 3rd biggest need. Double so when our PP is chugging along in the top 7 anyway, and that is Boyle's biggest area of impact. I just don't see the major need for a rental guy like Boyle at the expense of some okay assets.

And given our cap situation, and the # of assets we have to deal, we can't make a bunch of moves. So I rather not waste a move on a rental guy to help our top 7 PP like Boyle.

I'd probably trade Hagelin for Ladd. It's easier to find a Hagelin than a Ladd. They might very well have a better version of Hagelin with Duclair.
Ladd would be a piece I'd definitely have interest in. I don't know if WPG would be so willing to trade their captain and if so for so little (would you want just Hagelin for Callahan?). But if he could be had for the right price that's certainly a winger with size, scoring ability, and a bit of toughness that this team needs.
