Rep. Tim Murphy said Thursday that he will resign from Congress this month, a day after the eight-term Pennsylvania Democrat announced that he would not seek reelection amid a personal scandal.

“Upon further discussion with my family, I have made the decision to resign my position” effective Oct. 21, Murphy wrote in a letter to House Speaker Paul D. Ryan. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served the people of southwestern Pennsylvania and to have worked with the talented and dedicated men and women of the United States Congress.”

...

The resignation of Murphy, a clinical psychologist, comes after a news report claimed that the married Democrat had asked a woman with whom he had an extramarital affair to get an abortion.

Murphy, 65, said in a statement Wednesday: “After discussions with my family and staff, I have come to the decision that I will not seek reelection to Congress at the end of my current term.”

Murphy first publicly admitted in early September to having an affair with Shannon Edwards, a woman half his age, a revelation that dealt a blow to his reelection prospects in 2018. Murphy was first elected to the House in November 2002.

In a Jan. 25 text message obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Edwards said Murphy had “zero issue posting your pro-life stance all over the place when you had no issue asking me to abort our unborn child just last week when we thought that was one of the options.”

According to the newspaper, a text response from Murphy’s cellphone number that same day said that his staff was responsible for the antiabortion messages: “I’ve never written them. Staff does them. I read them and winced. I told staff don’t write any more. I will.”

why would a dude have to resign just for asking a woman he had consensual sex with to have an abortion?

How do you go back to your conservative pro life base with any face when you epitomize hypocrisy? He's a lying hypocrite. He should resign.

Anthony Wiener had to resign over something completely legal.

Little known fact: Whenever a Republican has to resign from office due to a sex scandal they immediately have to register as a Democrat.

First, most of his district, before voting for him, voted for Murtha for 40 years or so. Pittsburgh isn't the Bible Belt.
And I'm being slightly tongue-in-cheek, b/c I would personally call for his resignation. But it seems from his record that a) he is a smart dude, b) has back some intriguing bi-partisan legislation and c) his constituents have voted for him for 15 years.

I would submit that many of you have no problem with having sex with whoever wants to have sex with you.
I would submit that many of you have no problem if the woman had had an abortion (with or without his request).
I would submit that many of you don't have a problem voting for people who have proved hypocritical over something they've legislated or called for legislation on.

Is it just that it's "sex-related", so like Dviss said, it's par for the course to resign for a sex scandal? Unless you're the President? :stirthepot:

It's not just the abortion, it's that he threw his staff under the bus to try and pacify his mistress. "I'm not anti abortion, it's my staff, I swear! We can have sex again, right?"

didn't dig that deeply into it. Makes sense.

As I said, I'm nowhere close to defending this clown. But I'm legit curious why he "had to go", knowing the demographics of much of the board.

I don't think very many of us are in his district in PA. Our demographics don't matter much. I assume he has some idea about his constituents and what they will/won't tolerate.

I haven't seen anything from his constituents. I've seen notes on FaceBook, CNN, the Posts above and Sly's WaPo article above. Just was curious.

Barfo's guy Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in prison for "something completely legal."

8 terms? Drain the swamp.

Top reasons for the ending of political careers:

1.) Women
2.) Term ending/ not reelected/ retiring
3.) Death (natural causes/disease)
4.) Assasination
5.) Email scandals
6.) Pee videos

I'm amazed the old man can get it up and create the situation to therefore ask for an abortion.

I don't think he has to go for this. Or at least, if his views weren't so hypocritical I would not think he had to go. If he kept quiet on the abortion issue or was pro choice, then the scandal would simply be down to he cheated on his wife. Personally, I would not vote for someone who cheated, but I don't think it constitutes enough reason to ask him to step down.

It's the hypocrisy that takes the cake. Over and over on social issues it turns out that crusaders often preach one thing and do the other. It's the people who want to admonish gays and then get caught in action with the same sex. It's human nature I guess, but it's infuriating in our leaders. Dems do it too, but to a lesser extent because their "belief system" is much more accepting of different peoples and their lifestyles. Or at least they used to be more excepting. Now, so many Dems demonize anyone who isn't lock-step with them, but that's a slightly different issue.

Hypocrisy is on the march in American politics. I don't care what politicians do in their bedroom but many people do. Especially Republicans, and in this case, those are his constituents. They see the cheating, they see the fake pro-life stance, they see the selfishness in throwing staff under the bus. The scandal is n their ranks, not the democrats in this case. But you will see many Dems pile on for 2 main reasons. 1) hypocrisy is evident (I covered that). and 2) Schadenfreude. It's simple team play, the other side fumbled the ball so it's your turn to rub it in.

It makes sense, but it seems as if it's only the "sexual hypocrisy" or the "abortion hypocrisy" that warrants this "gots-ta-go" drumbeat. I mean, just off the top of my head, Nancy Pelosi's hypocrisy on the ACA/Replacement issue is staggering. Hell, I've taken my (D) representative to task for her hypocrisy on environmental regulation, yet allowing Monsanto laws to flourish and backing utility companies' hosing of customers with solar power. R's have been hypocritical with their "vote for my Tea Party-ing, swamp-cleansing limited gubbmint" stance, then keeling over to whatever Boehner (now Ryan/McConnell) wanted. But this.... this is beyond the pale?

:dunno:

It's easy to grasp certain ideas and to plainly see hypocrisy in some areas and more difficult with other topics.

1) He is vocal about not wanting gays in the military yet got caught hiring men to give him sex.

2) He is for green energy and yet supports tax dispensation plans for certain companies including ones who might not be green.

Which one of those is bite sized easy to reply to on Facebook?
