I think this is more about saving their own ass (senate seats) by linking Bernanke with failure in the economy and then distancing and being against him.

Ben Bernanke’s road to reappointment as Federal Reserve chairman got rockier today when two further US senators said that they would oppose the central banker’s second term.
Barbara Boxer, a Californian Democrat, and Russ Feingold, a Democrat from Wisconsin, said that they would vote against Mr Bernanke’s nomination when the Senate was polled, possibly as early as next week.
Some reports put at 16 the number of senators threatening to vote against Mr Bernanke’s return. His four-year term as head of America’s central bank expires on January 31.
As many as 12 senators have said that they are undecided on whether to bank Mr Bernanke, who was nominated for a second term by President Barack Obama last August.
