Did he sign Webster before he needed to? Foot injuries are a major concern, although I understand this one shouldn't be a problem. I wonder why KP didn't wait till Webster came back from his injury before giving him a new contract, did they have a standing offer on the table for Webster? Obviously hindsight it's easy to say he should have waited, I'm just surprised that KP would risk signing an injured player when there was no rush. No biggie just something to consider if Webster continues to have set backs or it becomes something that plagues him the rest of his career.
 
I feel what your saying but my defense for KP is, how was he to know Martell would get injured? He may have known with Greg, and that is a totally different story. But with Webbie how was he to know?

Maybe I have my time frame messed up. Wasn't Webs contract extended while he was injured? If not delete this post before I look any dumber ;)

Actually KP had to get Martell under contract before October 28th or he would have posed about a 12 million dollar caphold this coming summer, the facts that Diogu and Frye who are in a similar situation and didn't get extensions probably indicates they aren't in the long term plans, while KP probably felt Martell is either movable in trade or worth keeping in the long run (even if only as a backup).

Regardless of injury, 4 million a year is probably a good value for Martell, and if they handle his rehab with patience there's no reason to believe the stress fracture is going to be a chronic injury.

No, you're right. He was injured, but it had occurred only a few days before the deadline to offer him an extension.

I wouldn't worry too much, Martell is a bit of a bargain at his current contract for the production he's provided, and once he's healthy he should be easy to move in a trade if so desired.

Thanks, didn't know about the caphold. I agree Martel is a bargain at 4 million just wondered why he would sign him to extension until he had to, just in case he had a major injury but the caphold explains it.
 
I'm a pretty big skeptic of Webster, but I do think he can be an average NBA starter or so...and $4 million / year for an average starter is pretty good value. It's below MLE, which is set at the average salary.

Foot injuries are a worry for big men. It could be recurring for Webster, but I wouldn't assume that. As long as he stays off it long enough for it to heal fully, it should be fine. A broken bone isn't a huge worry for an athlete...as I recall, bones actually heal back stronger. Tendons that get torn are forever weaker.
 
A stress fractures can be no big deal... I've talked to numerous runners who had to had xrays for something to find they have ran through many of them. If they are painful enough to make you stop a few weeks of inactivity and you are usually fine. My guess is he didn't think it was a big deal.

Ironic that if he didn't have surgery... he'd probably be fine and playing right now.
 
Pretty close to worst-case scenario, he has Zydrunas Ilgauskas feet. Those feet, after some original problems, haven't been an issue in 5 years. and he's a big skinny man.
 
Martell is getting 5 million a year IIRC.

Here's a question: What are the cap holds on Roy and Aldridge? Storyteller lists their qualifying offers as $5.2 mil and $7.6 mil, but if Webster's cap hold was $12 mil, then there's something I'm missing. Is the qualifying offer the minimum they can be paid to be retained by their club, and the cap hold the max, or should those numbers be the same?

The qualifying offer is the minimum amount the team is bound to offer an RFA for one year. The cap-hold, I believe, is much larger and is what an RFA or UFA with Bird rights counts as against the team's cap until they sign a new deal, sign the qualifying offer or the team renounces their rights to the player.

I'm not sure how cap-holds are calculated.

For guys coming off of the fourth year of their rookie scale deals the caphold is 3X or 2.5X their previous season's salary ... in other words a ton.
