Did Roy ever make is public statement?

Wasn't Roy going to make a public statement with respect to his contract negotiations last week? Did I miss this? What did he say?

I think this was most likely a bluff by Roy and his agent that didn't force KP into anything like they had hoped. There was never a public statement, and IMO that is in the best interest of Roy.

Especially considering that internet posters, such as myself that sport Roy avatars, were critical of some Roy's actions and statements during this off-season. I wonder if that little bit of public blowback caused them to reel in what I called the "nuclear option" - at least for a while.

Agreed; to be a little more specific, I'd be willing to bet that the "$49 autograph" non-story held him back. Making a public statement that essentially says "pay me my money" after a story (non-story) about charging for autographs probably would have blown up right in his face.

Wonder if that non-story was floated out there as a block against his public statement? Both pitchers bean players 1-for-1 when things get ugly.

Agreed. IMO it is just a bad idea for any athlete regardless of the level of adoration they get to complain about money in these economic times. It was bad form in the past when times were good, but people tolerated it for a bit and could understand. However, the line is much closer and easier to tip over now and Roy shouldn't try to risk public opinion to try to get a deal sooner rather than later.

He'll get what he want and the pressure will mount on KP to get a deal done in the eyes of the fans even if Roy stays completely silent - we all know he's the franchise.

He wants a player option for the fifth year which assures him of 18 million dollars if he doesn't opt out.

That's an interesting idea. I can't believe PapaG hasn't read this and mentioned Vulcan. Heck, I even wonder about it after reading your theory. Seems awfully convenient that something that is probably a mundane activity (paid card signing at shops) suddenly becomes a story. Who broke that story anyways?

Yes, I'm sure that internet posters with Brandon Roy avatars played a large role in Roy deciding to keep quiet last week.

Nope, he did that because, um, he needed more time off from the game.

The reason he didn't make another public statement is because a few internet posters with Roy as their avatar were critical of him. Anonymous people making opinions impact reality more than anyone can dream. I'm awaiting Roy's statement apologizing for his insolent behavior to those brave enough to still carry his image underneath their name.
