Disappointed in fans and their knee jerk reaction

It's currently being claimed by a family member that the ODL suspension was lifted and Cliff has a valid CA DL. Additionally, the family says they can prove the vehicle has insurance and will fight the ticket.

Granted, these are only claims. Similar to the probable cause of the officer to cite Harris.

IF, and I am saying if the families claims are true, this means that Cliff is guilty of not wearing a seatbelt. Now, it's been a while since I was a traffic cop, but if I recall correctly, it's a class c violation and carries a $97 fine.

And, if this is true....this means a $97 fine (who among us won't violate traffic laws this week?) warranted the following comments:

IDIOT x 3
MORON x 2
KICK HIM OFF THE TEAM
ZERO COMMON SENSE

Way to give up on a kid who I am told is working hard in school, attending class, keeping his grades up, working hard in practice and doing what his coaches ask of him. Love him or hate him, Cliff is an emotional guy and a real person. A real person - with flaws and strengths - like all of us.

It's yet another example of how fans should think more about what alleged and innocent until proven guilty means, there are two sides to every story and these are REAL people (often kids) who are making the same mistakes that many of us made when we were young.

Maybe the claims by Cliff's dad don't pan out. If so, I'm still not going to throw in the towel on the person Cliff is and his future by "kicking him off the team" and pulling his academic scholie.

Why be disappointed? I expected a backlash from the fans over what was reported and had the story stayed the same, I wouldn't expect them to change their stance. I'm sure with what is being reported now fans will change their minds but then again he could still be guilty. The court of public opinion is that, opinion just because harsh words are exchanged people should take them for what they are, words. People need to grow up and realize that the overreaction was done because they're frustrated and disappointed.

I've seen a dozen of posts like yours on many different sites and it's annoying that you think you're better than others because you weren't too quick to judge. Yes, you're a saint, so please tell us how to react next time so we can do so accordingly.

Give me a break.

Reasonable response from one who is only interested in defending their position and is not interested or respectful of any other point of view. On one hand you state the need for "growing up" yet then say how annoyed you are with other posters. I hope the irony doesn't escape you.

It appears your ethical standard and position of highness applies not only to student athletes, but also to fellow posters.

Your personal issues with my posting style aside, the fact remains that Cliff is a real person who may or may not have messed up. But, the fact remains he's given a lot to Oregon and by all accounts is doing well in class and in practice.

Yet, it's not rare to find "fans" who want him kicked off the team based not on criminal activity, but traffic violations and even because he's not performing well on the field anyway.

I agree Tlong. Oregon needs to hire a seatbelt advisor so this travesty NEVER happens again. (uh, oh...another cap! oh, the outrage)
 
For the record, I'm not claiming the father is right or wrong. Whatever discipline CK hands down (after a fact finding) to CH will most likely be fair and one I will support - unless it's overly soft or harsh.
 
I never advocated kicking him off the team over this - quite the contrary. I DID call him an idiot. By now, these guys have to know that the EPD and the press are targeting them. Be smart!

Yes, I find it annoying that many fans have taken this "holier than thou," stance on the Harris situation, especially when the reaction to his news was predictable. I also find it childish that people are taking other posts, on the internet way too seriously. It maybe hypocritical or ironic but that's how I feel.

My only interest is open discussion. If you don't think I'm being respectful to others please let me know, I don't particularly care for your point of view on this subject but find you to be a pleasant fellow. I respect others opinions plenty, though I don't always show it. I don't feel the need to comment on an opinion I agree with because I felt they said it better than I could. Doesn't mean I don't have respect for other's opinions so please don't speak for me.

I think you feel my argument is about censoring what other people want to write, be it negative or positive, is wrong, but at the same time you feel I'm trying to censor you or disagree with your opinion. That's not the case, it's perfectly reasonable to want fans to react a certain way, and ask them to use class and integrity. My argument was more of a, "What did you expect." That's all. I don't have a problem with you, just like to debate.

I wasn't one of the fans lambasting Cliff. I felt, based on the news given that he should be held accountable but that's all. I hold only myself to a set of standards and do not expect anything from fans or student athletes.
 
This wasn't a jump to conclusions by the fans. He was cited for driving with a suspended license, lack of insurance, and driving without a seatbelt. Those are facts presented to us by the local police. If it turns out that the police are wrong, and he actually has a valid license and insurance, it's not on the fans. It's on the police for not having all the details. This isn't a murder trial where someone is innocent until proven guilty. Cliff was cited for three clear charges. There's no reason for the local PD to not have record of a valid drivers license or proof of insurance.
 
According to Oregon DMV, the Harris family's timeline was off. Cliff's 60-day suspension for driving 118 mph in June expires ... tomorrow.
 
3 LSU players were suspended one game for drug use. Their #1 rusher, top defender on take aways, and another cb. This for testing positive for synthetic pot. They are playing a week later against Bama.

I'm sure a seat belt violation warrants a death sentence! Come on!!

I'm pretty sure nobody is worked up over the seat belt violation.
 
I care less about his trangressions off the field as I do his bone-headed play on the field and his ego that comes with it. I'd like Harris to be taken down a notch by the coaching staff even more. The kid thinks he walks on water.

I dont get the synthetic pot thing. If your going puff bleeziez, why not just smoke the real thing.
 
But his ego IS Cliff Harris. He's arguably one of the top 3 cover corners in college football and he came in as a FR introducing himself and saying he was here to "lock ship down." A couple of traffic violations later and fans want him kicked off the team?

The guy messes up and some fans want him off the team? Based on alleged traffic violations? Strange. Very, very strange.

Personally, I'm posing as the DA again. Deep down, what I love about CH is also what I hate and what I hate is in a way, what I love about him...

Some players are in fights on the field, assault women, drive drunk, do drugs, cheat in class, or just last year at OSU a player has three criminal incidents from stealing, criminal trespass, stealing campus property, etc and he stays - but, here in Oregon we call for kicking a player off the team for traffic violations that aren't even proven yet? Weird...

@ Sly - do you have a link?? Because I thought the 118 incident was Aug 16th. A 60 day suspension would have already ended, if (and is usual) the suspension begins immediately upon being cited and following "time served" guidelines, this timeline would have expired.

That's my point. Right now we're in the midst of a major NCAA investigation. As such, we're under the microscope. Harris has been breaking a lot more rules that just these two traffic incidents. Kelly has no choice but to be a bit stern. I support the coach and also fully believe he has good reason (much of which we don't fully know) for his actions as he's a very deliberate man.
 
I wonder if people are just fed up with Oregon looking bad in the media. First you have the Legarrette Punch, the Masoli incident, the recruiting allegations, and the two Cliff violations. Just saying that's a lot of negative press. Not that constitutes justification of wanting to kick a player off the team.
 
I can understand why some people would be fed up with the bad decisions Cliff seems to make. I cant speak for anyone who said "kick him off the team" or "what an idiot" but I would venture to guess that its more of the overall accumulation of his bad decisions, than wanting him gone for a simple traffic violation.
 
As a side point.... The NCAA is sniffing around our program right now and this year we have some serious 5* recruits looking at the OOOOO! I'd hate to have potential scholarships yanked or probations for bowls while things are going so well. It would be helpful if little stupid smoke fires could be avoided till everything settles down. Ellis and Shaq are reasons enough to not get into any freakin trouble off the field. Those two could anchor our defense for four years!!!!
 
BTW, even if the family is 100% right, don't expect the charges to be dropped.

If the DA is really out to make an example of Harris, they will argue that he is now an Oregon resident and it is illegal for him to have a California license.

Either Harris caves, or this will drag on for months. Either way, those who want to slam the program will get their chance.
