If all states had higher taxes you also might see more businesses leave the country.
Highly unlikely.

Now if your point is to tax businesses instead of individuals, then fine. But Oregon taxes both highly. Meanwhile Oregon gets $0 sales tax from all the luxury spenders, travelers, etc that are totally willing to pay a very high tax. Just seems like a stupid way of running a state.

I definitely agree that we should be collecting more tax revenue from tourists and travelers. Oregon should have a high (maybe even 100%) lodging tax for out of staters. All hotels, campsites, restaurants, and any short-term accommodations.

Show your Oregon ID and you don't pay the tax.

Lol who wants to live in Alabama? Businesses need to be able to recruit talented people too. Good luck doing that in Alabama.
Doesn't Huntsville Alabama have one of the highest average IQ in the country?

Largely thanks to Marshall Space Flight Center... But still...

The Army doesn't really give you a say and probably contributes. Yes, they have a Rocketman place. Huntsville seems to buck the trend. Overall Alabama is a bottom 5 state for iq, though. Because it suckssssss.

I don't think you could pay most people enough money to move there.

Oregon taxes with market based sourcing. Just because a business is located in Oregon doesn't mean everything gets taxed there. Just the same as if someone is headquartered elsewhere. Most states have gone that way

The state income tax is pretty steep. Now I get that is employees but employers must pay that as well. There is a huge difference working in Oregon vs working in Washington.

Actually no. where they are talking about moving is 25 minutes from Chicago, not across the country or in a completely different time zone.
Yes, that is different, but the mentality is the same

Have you been to Alabama? It’s incredibly beautiful
I'm sure people in Alabama laugh at the thought of Oregon having nice areas just as oregonians here laugh at Alabama.

Goes back to my point that most the world is convinced where they live is the best, even if they've never lived anywhere else.

Some people are also convinced where they live or lived is shit.

Cept that the county and state have created funding, and only a minority of the city council has said they were against using the environmental funding pool for paying for it...and the Bears have been having this issue for a *LONG* time whereas we're literally in the first 3 months of this even being addressed.

We all know San Diego is one of the premium spots in all of the USA. It's just very expensive.

That's like trying to convince one's self that Bar S hot dogs are legit.
Alabama is wonderful if you like humidity, an abundance of insects, poisonous snakes and residents who always seem angry, defensive and/or still fighting the Civil War......Mobile has a lot going for it though.....

So your answer is no, you have never been.

with the right seasoning, BBQ sauce, wood chips for a nice smoked flavored added, being cooked on a nice charcoal bbq...they're still disgusting.

I have and it sucks. It might look nice through a window from a nicely air-conditioned room, but even then, only if you got rid of all traces of humans.

Oh, and the food sucks. Fuck "Southern Cooking" - those people have no right ever to criticize British food.

(I lived in Central Arkansas for three years. Left and have never returned, or been remotely tempted to. NW Arkansas is great, but it would be a lot nicer if it weren't part of Arkansas.)

The food does indeed suck

Never been and it’s not on my travel bucket list. I’m sure it has many beautiful places, but when the temperature is 85 degrees, the humidity is 98%, and the mosquitoes are sucking you dry, who really gives a crap about how beautiful it is?

My brother was stationed in Arkansas and Alabama while in the army. Said it was nice, but muggy as fuck. I don't think he's had any inclination to return (he did do a reunion of sorts with the people he was stationed with in Kansas though).

His line about Kansas always struck me funny. "It's so flat, that if you stand out on a field and look hard enough, you can see the back of your head in front of you"

Humidity is the devil.

there's not as big a difference overall as there is in the state income tax. The left coast varies, a lot

state income tax: Oregon 4.75%-9,9%....Washington 0% (7-9.9% on capital gains)....Cal 1%-13.3%

state retail sales tax: Oregon 0%....Washington 7.7%-10.7% (depending on location)....Cal 7.25%-10.25%

sales tax on new Vehicles: Oregon 0% ....Wash 8.5%-10.9%....Cal 7.25%-10.25%

state gas tax: Oregon $.40/gal....Wash $.55/gal....Cal....$.63/gal

state electricity tax: Oregon 1.5%....Washington 3.87%....Cal $20-24/month flat rate; local tax ranges from 1-11%

Oregon doesn't nickel & dime you as much as many other states. Vehicle registrations are cheaper. It's cheaper in Oregon to register as a contractor with the required bonding and insurance.

I've lived and worked in 3 states: Oregon-->Alaska-->Arizona-->Oregon. I really noticed the way Arizona went after those nickels and dimes, aggressively. And that was after they assessed income tax and sales tax on just about everything.

I lived in Juneau in the early/mid 80's. It was the wild west. No state income tax or sales tax. Cities could imposed a tax but it was usually small. And that was in the days when residents would get an annual dividend. It was over $1000/year back then; don't know about now. If you wanted to be a contractor, you could go to the state offices and buy a handyman's license for $75; then post a $250 bond, and then you were a legal contractor. One restriction was that you could not have a 'contract' over $2,500. The other was that you couldn't do commercial work. I had a partner and we had a full contractors license, but we ran with anywhere from 3-7 guys working for us and every single one was a licensed handyman. Not much paperwork at all

I think Oregon should be imposing some form of tourism sales tax. And maybe should have a state sales tax but that will never happen

I don't know how you'd really evaluate tax/spending by states. You'd have to total all state, county, & city spending and have some kind of gauge using both GDP and/or population and/or employment

state income taxes are the most noticeable. But all those other less noticeable sales taxes, taxes on gas and electricity, registrations, etc. add up
