In my household we have a three dog rule. We have three chiweenies, one is old and two are 2 years old.

When I had to put my oldest boy chihuahua mix down a year and a half ago because of a heart defect we got a new boy at ths shelter the next weekend.

My girlfriend didn't feel like she was ready but I explained to her that the poor dogs at the shelter can't wait forever for a new home. I usually adopt older dogs because they are less likely to be adopted. This time we found the cutest little brindle chihuahua mix puppy.

I will always miss my dogs when they pass, but nothing feels better than giving a sad dog a new home.

It just so happens that this little puppy has become the best and sweetest dog I have ever owned.

Dogs are awesome. I've had in the past and will again in the future, but damn it's tough to treat a dog right if you live alone, always having to come home and walk the pup instead of staying over at a partners place, or having to figure out what to do during all travel.

But I just got back from a week at Black Butte with my brothers family, who just got a 1 year old mut that's one of the sweetest dogs I've met in ages (although a bit too hyper). Anyway, I had so much fun just throwing the ball to the dog, petting her and hiking with her I just started realizing how much I miss my dogs and would like to get another. I may be moving states real soon, so I have to wait a few months, but I think it may just be time to get another dog. I've only had puppies in the past, but I would be very open to getting a dog from 1-4 years old. Would be sweet to come home to dog but a pain to deal with all the hassles that go along with that. But I think the pros outweigh the cons.

The "right time" is different for everyone. At different times I have gone both ways. Sometimes we adopt a new dog soon. This last time, it took us nearly 9 months. No one can make that descision but you!

As the saying goes, adopting a dog doesn't change the world - but it changes their world. I'm glad your new little buddy is working out so well!

I just don't want my fair share of our pet overpopulation sitting in a shelter when I have a good home to give. My girlfriend was on the fence but I asked her why she would deprive a poor dog of one of the best lives any dog could have. Now she thanks me because of how perfect a dog he is.

Just reading how you weigh the pros and cons makes me think you would be a wonderful pet owner. Mine miss us when we are gone but you don't have to be there 24/7 to give them a good life.

Thanks. I am seldom happier than on a hike alone with a dog, a stick and my thoughts.

Mine are too small to go on rides with us. I throw toys in the back yard and they chase each other all day for exercise.
