Don't Hate Nate: A Message to Iggy Fans

I've noticed a lot - a ton, actually - of hatred towards Nate Robinson himself on this board. Everyone sporting the Andre Iguodala 'ROBBED' sig is guilty of it:

You're hating the MAN, not the JUDGES. When you guys say that Andre got robbed, you're demeaning Nate, and it's extremely unfair. He put on a great show (as did Iggy), and frankly, they both deserved to win. It's hard for me to come straight out and say that the majority of you are blinded by the fact that you're jealous of such a tremendous athlete, because that's obviously not the case; Andre had some amazing dunks, as did Robinson.

This is an unfair, stereotypical comment that I'm sure I will regret ever saying: I find it funny that a dozen black basketball players can't figure out what a total score is when six digits are put up in their faces. Kobe Bryant, as I watched him trying to use the mathematical part of his brain which he seemingly lacks, struggled for what seemed like minutes... 10 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = ??

Kobe: Just subtract whatever is left of whatever number doesn't equal ten, and subtract if from 50. Notice how four numbers from that perfect score? 50 - 4 = ?? 46! OMFG! MUH BOI AI GOT ROBBED!

That's neither here nor there...

For the record, Nate is no taller than 5'7". If you guys actually believe he's any taller than that, you've got another thing coming.

I'm not here to argue the fact that Andre didn't deserve to win, because as I said in one of the opening paragraphs, both he and Nate did. And for those who think Kenny Smith ripped Iggy of his title as Slam Dunk Champion, give me a break... If you take a second to look back at the tape and watch Smith decide whether he deserved an 8 or a 9 (or a 10, for that matter), it's obvious that he wasn't looking at the other judges and thinking, "OH! If I give Iggy anything but an 8 here, then Nate loses! In that case, I'll give Iggy an 8! I win!"

To sum it all up, read the following points I've so willingly set aside for the haters to read (and the lovers to rejoice):

-Don't hate Nate for winning. If you must hate anyone, hate Kenny Smith. Better yet, hate the constitution of the entire contest!
-Don't thinking, for one second, that Nate wasn't at a disadvantage. If you are at loss for words over this whole ordeal, remember how tall Spud Webb's understudy is - 5'7"! Iggy is a monster compared to Nate, and if you can't see that this wasn't a tremendous feat for the little guy, then you're dead to me and half of the members at this board.

To sum up (further), allow me to say that 1) I don't hate anyone for discounting Nate's victory. And 2) I don't hate those who are using the 'ROBBED' sig, although I wouldn't mind getting ahold of that PSD and tearing it to shreds in Photoshop.

I'm not here to argue. I'm just telling my version of the truth.

if you read all my posts, i dont think ive ever bashed nate at all. ive only bashed the judges, mainly rudy t. i dont believe it was nate's fault, because the judges detirmine the outcome of the contest. i by no way hate nate for anything, i just wished iggy would have won. if you were watching the contest, you could have seen that nate was surprised when they anounced the winner

Andre put on a GREAT show, it's just that I'm more angry than happy for Nate at this point. To see Kobe Bryant on the sideline humping Iggy's leg the whole night... It was unnerving on a dispicable level.

The new rule should be:

3-6 missed attempts = minus 1 point

Then no more attempts over 10.

Great ideas, guys. I'd have to say that a time limit would be more practical, but it needs to be leniant enough so that the contestants don't feel rushed.

The bottom line is, for me anyway, that there isn't (at least not the last two years) a system that takes away from any dunker who takes a lot of attempts. Nate did, but you know what? That's not against the rules.

Nothing against Iggy, though... I want that messaged to be conveyed clearly.

So its not like he was trying to do something he never did.

I see what you're saying about getting frustrated over the attempts, because believe me, I was even getting queezy watching him fail to throw that half-court spectacle down (that was crazy though, you've got to admit - for him to even think about doing that in one swift motion is just crazy). I had my U-Dub hoodie on the whole night, but took it off for the contest to wave around maniacally.

I haven't discounted Nate at all, rather I just argued how the league pretty much changed the rules for him, and how the judges pretty much handed him the title when he shouldn't have won it.

What's done is done, and Nate is the champ, even though in a lot of people's minds it was Iguodala who should have won.

It's not Nate's fault... rather it's the judges fault, and if anything needs to be done, the NBA needs to learn from this and revise the rules and the competition to prevent another travesty like this from occuring again.

Learn how to play basketball, Nate saved his best dunk for the Final, Iggy dunk was tight, maybe even the best of the night, but that was in the earlier, and what happened in the previous round doesn't count in the dunk off. Walk it off. Iggy ran out of ideas.

The rules say you can get as many dunk attempts as you want, so stop hating, its the rule, live with it, don't be a crybaby.

who's crying? learn how to accept someone who has a different opinion then yours. its called "debate". im not hating OR crying...i thought iggy's dunks were better then nate's.

i fully understand the rule is that you get as many attempts as you want...doesnt change the fact that it took away from his dunks. its a rule that needs to be, and WILL be changed soon

Dude, I really don't understand why you would say black basketball players, as opposed to basketball players in general. Sounded like you were saying that just for the sake of being controversial. You have the right to your own opinion on the dunk contest, but try not to bring race into the issue.

Wait a minute, I think you are the one who doesn't understand what the Iguodala supporters are arguing. You have came back with the same argument repeatedly, but fail to really refute the arguments that Iggy supporters have.

Alright, once again: the rules do say that the dunker can have as many attempts to complete a dunk, we all know that. But what we also know is that the league eliminated the "two-attempt" rule THIS year... it was there in previous years. Jason Richardson missed a three-peat because he missed a between the legs 360 dunk twice in the final round, allowing Fred Jones to win the contest on a weak dunk. So, is it fair for the league to change the rules the same year the little guy is in it? No.

How was Nate "more" creative than Iguodala in the dunk-off? Iggy ran out of ideas, but Nate's dunk was no more creative than Iguodala's. What made it creative? The fact that he put the ball between his legs twice before throwing the lob? That should not have been taken into account for the score. In the 90's, Michael Finley (or somebody else, I'm not 100% sure), lobbed it up, did a cartwheel, and dunked it. He was given bad scores...

Nate was great, don't get me wrong, but he got extra points out of sympathy. Why? Not only because of his height (although the dunks he did were great), but because the judges felt sorry for him after he missed his dunks repeatedly, and still gave him high marks for watered down versions of his original attempt. So, all the BS about the judges not taking the misses into account should be thrown out the window. If they don't penalize him for it, they should not give him points for it as well.

Next, nobody has a problem with Nate winning, what we have a problem with is the WAY he won. We have not been disrespectful to Nate's victory, but the bottom line is that the judges gave Nate the biggest gift of his NBA career in the dunk contest. There is no arguing that... even most of the Nate supporters I have talked to feel that way.

I also still have not gotten a response from you as to how you can say all of Nate's dunks were more creative and original than Iguodala's... it doesn't make sense at all. If anything both of their dunks were equal... nobody was more creative than the other (outside of Iguodala's behind the backboard dunk, and Nate's Spud dunk... to an extent). Iggy Dala took a couple of attempts in his dunk, and he did the same dunk over twice in a row, while Nate's dunk were all totally different.

I told you, Nate's dunk differed completely from Iggy Dala's dunks, the only different Dunk Dala did was the one included with Iverson which was the best dunk of the night, but Iggy Dala didn't deserve the win in the dunk off, its simple, Nate's dunk was better if you watch the videos.

Why would the judges feel sorry for him? In Nate's first dunk they gave him a 9 and Kenny Smith who's a HUge Nate fan and a Knicks broadcaster gave him an 8....No one felt sorry for Nate, Nate got the crowd, the judges and everyone behind him.















Fall back, Nate finished the contest, and you forgot how much attention Nate got from the crowd from his first attempt, it was a difficult dunk cause he started it from the full court, and had to put together timing(when the ball came off the board and when he had to catch it), staminia, hang time, everything.


Please, what Nate did was a video game dunk What Iggy Dala did I see happend in NYC playgrounds.

Nate has no wingspan, Nate has stumpy legs, Nate is a 5"7 man getting high in the hair.

Nate won the competition fairy, you guys have been overreacted to this thing way too much and need to realize how Nate finished it.

Are you talking about his final dunk in the dunk off? Last time I checked, he started from half-court, and then gradually moved in closer and closer to the three-point line. He did not start from full court. It took a great deal of athleticism and stamina to pull it off, I'll agree with that, but that brings us back to the previous point of a shorter player having an advantage over a taller player in the dunk contest. The dunk itself was nothing special as it has been done many times before in the dunk contest. So, either way you look at it, your argument on this dunk completely contradicts your argument over Iguodala not being original.

Just need some clarification on this statement... which Nate dunk are you talking about? The final dunk in the dunk-off? If you don't see a windmill off the glass on NYC playgrounds, then I don't know what playgrounds you've been to. Dunks from both guys (with the exception of the behind the backboard dunk from Iggy, and the Spud dunk from Nate) are on playgrounds across the country. Again, invalid argument.

I do realize that he won it, but I do not think he won it fairly. Obviously, there is bias everywhere in life, and nothing can change that. It's human nature. I also realize how Nate finish it, and obviously our opinions on that matter differ, and that is understandable, and my issues with your statements regarding that have already been addressed in this post.

If you contend we are overreacting when our boy got screwed, then the same can be said about you: you are overreacting when we are stating that our boy got screwed!

At the end of the day, Nate Robinson is the dunk "champion." Some, including you, believe he deserved it. Most people, including me, do not. It's as simple as that.

I myself was a Nate fan when he played for Washington in college, and even I think Dre got robbed. I am a 76ers fan to, but I still support Nate Ron, and my honest opinion is that he did not deserve to win the dunk contest that night.

I'm not hating Nate it wasn't his fault he won, the judges one it for him and thats was really makes me mad about the whole thing.

In response to another poster's reaction to my comment - no, I am not black (although I was born into a half-black family and attend a school that is almost 40% black). I was rediscent to even bring up that fact, and I realize that it was extremely unfair to everyone who dared to read down that far into my rant.

I take back the fact that I said it at an unappropriate time, but sadly, it's true. I stated an observation, and denying their race would be unjust to every human being - but the funny thing is, had they been white basketball players I might not have brought race into it whatsoever.

But again, that's neither here nor there (I suggest that if you want to discuss more with me on this issue, I'll have no problem chatting with you through PM or AIM; we both know that it's not appropriate for this site, so hopefully we can discuss things in a mature, candid fasion with open eyes).

If you can't present a logical statement or reason why Iggy Dala deserve to win it in the dunk off, then fall back. If you're new to dunking, theres no need to complain, be mad, and or cry about it.

Like I said, READ The first dunk all the judges gave Nate a 9, and Kenny Smith who's the biggest Nate supporter gave Nate an 8.

Even in the last part, in the dunk off, Kenny Smirth was trying to tie the scorer for Iggy Dala, Kenny Smith tried to give Dala the highest score possible.


Thats sad when you need the judges to struggle for you to get into a 2nd dunk off.


Nate had the superior preformance, its time for you to really let it go, crown Nate and as champ, and stop this trolling of "Andre got robbed"

Andre was assisted welfare the whole contest, I don't want to hear non-logical post, cause I want to read something thats worth while understanding not something like "waaah waah Andre was rob, Nate is great, but Andre is the real champ"

Geez, one of the reasons he got high scores is because people probably felt bad for him. Which is wrong in competition.

It's really a hard situation to judge because no matter what, if a player takes all those attempts he's bound to get a lower score anyway (what I'm saying is it's hard to tell a judge to base his decision on the final - and only the final - dunk; Kenny Smith, for example, might give T-Mac a 10 instead of an 8 if he hadn't taken so many attempts, regardless of what the rules were).

Ask yourself this: if Nate would have hit that through-the-legs spectacle that seemed impossible for a guy his size to throw down on the first attempt, it would have gotten a perfect score, wouldn't it've?

Oh yeah Kenny was trying to help Dre. Thats why people boo'ed the decision at the end right? You keep running your mouth about logical statements when you haven't made one yourself, you are a joke! I've posted an ESPN article that explains what I think. Apparently other people including professional sports writers agree with 76ers fans.

If your new to dunking you'd realize that it doesn't take a good dunker 14 times to make his damn dunks. No dunk champion in history has ever done something close to as bad as that!

Don't give me that its hard for someone as short as Nate excuse either! Spudd didn't miss his dunks 14 times did he? Nique' didn't. Mike didn't. Dr.J didn't. VC didn't. If Nate was ready he would have made his dunks, his stuff wasn't even effective to me because he took so long to do his dunks. Kenny Smith was rooting for the lil man to win the whole time, and watch the videos as he looks around to change the scores. ESPN said it was obvious how the judges looked at each other as they put together their scores.

I'm done with you because you aren't even objective. I realize Nate had some good dunks, and hey he won. But you fail to realize how much help he had, and how bad it looked when he kept missing his dunks. You can't see that because you don't want to see it, and that will never change with a biased Knicks fan like yourself.

If you can provide some rock-solid evidence for that (a link, not an image), I'll concede and provide a paragraph on how Nate Robinson only won because the judges felt bad/were pulling for him.
