She dropped the N bomb 11 times the other day and has quit her radio show.

Al Sharpton makes an appearance...but the one quote that to me should be the crux of this thread, is this one.
Schlessinger said on "Larry King Live" tonight that she has decided "not to do radio anymore" so she can say the things she wants to say.

"The reason is, I want to regain my First Amendment rights," she said. "I want to be able to say what's on my mind and in my heart and what I think is helpful and useful without somebody getting angry, some special interest group deciding this is the time to silence a voice of dissent and attack affiliates, attack sponsors. I'm sort of done with that."

I like how she's quitting because of her "1st amendment rights". I don't think 1st amendment rights apply to the radio.

This isn't a 1st amendment issue, this is a "I want to be able to talk all sorts of shit on the air and get away with it".

The fewer Schlessinger, Limbaughs and Savages on the air the better. They're only there to scare people (usually older and easily confused people) into believing their shit.

God bless them for making their money, but at least Jerry Springer admits that's why he is the way he is.

So she quit because she said a word that gets repeated ad nauseum on rap songs every day?

I believe if she released a CD, where you purchase the song/album knowing it will have certain colorful words in it, is not the same as broadcasting over the air.

You're comparing apples to Chrysler's here.

I love how demonizing the word just makes it more and more powerful of a slur. If you use it colloquially more often, it loses a bunch of the original sting.

I noticed how you didn't actually say the word in either of your posts.

The two most offensive words in the modern venacular are what.

"the n-word"
and
"the c-word"

so when you use it, you mean biz.

This is the best news of the month.

This is the best news of the month.

Ever read Orwell's "1984" ? Or see the movie "Brazil" ?

Seems like that's what we end up with if we get enough of this "good news."

I have never listened to her - not once. My suggestion is that if you don't like her (or someone else), change the station.

I've listened to her and she's fucking terrible.

Even though I'm generally a very conservative person in my own values and the advice I'd give, I've generally found her advice and commentary terrible. She didn't lose her first amendment rights, she lost her ability to get paid to talk because what she said was grossly stupid, poor personal advice, and poor commentary that doesn't even accurately reflect the views of social conservatives as I see them.

First Amendment says one cannot be legally prosecuted for speech, writing, etc. It does NOT mean one is immune from criticism. Even really harsh criticism. Schlesinger knows as much about the First Amendment as she does about variations in human sexuality. Nothing.

What if you happen to tune in to a radio station where they're playing rap songs that say "N-----" every other line, not realizing that this kind of language is being used . . . Is that also comparing apples to Chryslers?

This is the silliest debate in the world, and it goes on and on. Black kids in the inner cities all over America refer to each other as "N-----" and it's perfectly fine, but let a white person use the word and all hell breaks loose.

Your comparing yourself to inner-city black kids now?

Tisk tisk. Two wrongs don't make a right.

If the fake doctor hadn't broken the mold for right-wing female haters with sour faces, we wouldn't have Nancy Grace now.

My wife listens to her and has told me she advocates for more traditional gender roles... mom stays at home and raises kids etc... and I am all for that. Not saying that it *has* to be that way... just that I think that the family unit may function a bit more efficiently in that configuration.

So, should radio hosts imitate the worst street lingo or (shock!) strive to set a better example?

Incidentally it was not just the n-bombs. The caller complained about her white husband's relatives racist "jokes" and Schlesinger basically said shut up and don't be so sensitive. The caller talked about the "soft racism" of neighbors asking "What do black people think about X?" as though every African-American thought the same and Schlesinger basically said shut up, racism is just you imagination.

As to advocating traditional roles, why then doesn't she live them? Just another hypocrite. And it's not just so called traditional roles, she hates gays, she blames women if their husbands have affairs, condems extramarital sex for women but not men, etc.

Of course none of this means her free speech was violated. Maybe she just thinks she can get more money elsewhere.

I Beg To Differ. Even though they bleep it out on the Radio, its damn easy to tell what they're saying. Along with a lot of other words. To Illustrate my point:

Believe it or not, you can read this:

I cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. The phaonmneal pweor of the hmuan mnid, Aoccdrnig to rscheearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the first and last ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can still raed it wouthit a porbelm. This is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter

That's all neat and stuff, but what does it have to do with the price of tea in China?

Broadcast rules are completely different than CD rules. It's why movies and album can have explicit words in them (and in the case of movies, scenes) and radio programs, songs and tv shows can't.

It's why on HBO they can have a scene where a guy takes a dump in another guys mouth (on Oz) and on SNL a person will get fired for swearing on TV.

It's why CD's will have swearing on them, and KXLY doesn't. It's why there is a 7 second delay on live TV broadcasts (and radio broadcasts) and there isn't on CD's.

The rules don't apply to CD's the same way they do to radio programs. Being able to "understand" what word they're saying doesn't matter in this argument.

That was cool

So I guess I can type go fcuk yruoelsf, and get away with it now.

Yet she had a long affair in the 70s with Bill Ballance (the leading LA Top 40 rock DJ, frequent liberal pro-sexual revolution jokes on air, I loved him). Maybe she was a police informer, because as soon as the affair was over she became famous by saying she opposed all that stuff. We found out years later about the lying hypocrite's affair and nude pictures.

Wow, hold that with the edge touching a mirror--you won't believe the dirty image!

Sarah Palin had added her $.02 (but not the $12 million she's pulled in since quitting her job for the good of the country) by tweeting to Schlesinger to "reload not retreat" and saying Schelsinger has been "shackled". So apparently Palin wants Schlesinger to "reload" racist rants and believes being criticized for them is the same as slavery. Incidentally, Palin called for Rahm Emanuel to resign after he used the word "retarded", saying that was as "unacceptable as using the n-word". Apparently the n-word is another IOKIYAR (it's OK if you're a Republican). BTW, Schlesinger was vehemently opposed to the Republican's nominating Palin because Palin had returned to work after giving birth to a developmentally disabled child and said the R's should have nominated a woman whose children were grown if they wanted a woman on the ticket.

Ah, hypocrisy!

I always found it annoying that she billed herself as a "doctor", when her PHD was in physiology. (Her dissertation was on insulin in rats.)

Yes, her degree is not in psychology, it's in physiology. She's a glorified P.E. major.

Radio career
Schlessinger's first time on radio was not as a host, but as a caller to the show of shock jock forerunner[9] Bill Ballance in 1974. Impressed by her quick wit and sense of humor, Ballance began featuring her in a weekly segment. Ballance, who was married, also began a two year romantic relationship with her, which came to light many years later.[3] Schlessinger's stint on Ballance's show led to her own shows on a series of small radio stations...

Personal life
She married her first husband Michael F. Rudolph, a dentist, in 1972 when she was 25. She admitted to least two extramarital affairs before they were divorced in 1976[2].

Second marriage and later family life
In the mid-1970s while working in the labs at USC[citation needed], she met Lewis G. Bishop, a professor of neurophysiology who was married and the father of three children.[3] According to divorce filings, Schlessinger and Bishop began an affair. Bishop left his wife and moved in with Schlessinger. They lived together as an unmarried couple for approximately nine years, and Schlessinger tried to get pregnant after reversing an earlier tubal ligation and suffering an ectopic pregnancy. Bishop and Schlessinger married in early 1985 with Schlessinger announcing at the wedding that she was pregnant.[3]

does saying ****** scare people into believing whatever you want them to believe?

i mean i have no idea who this person is and really could not possibly care any less who she is, but that seems like an odd argument to make.

so...you don't know who she is but felt like commenting on the argument. brilliant.
