Smart kids, or easy classes? :)

EUGENE — De'Anthony Thomas proved to be a quick learner as a true freshman last season, highlighted by his dazzling, two-touchdown performance in Oregon's Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin.

Thomas and the Ducks are, it seems, quick learners in the classroom, too.

The Oregon football team posted a cumulative grade-point average of 2.85 in the spring term, UO coach Chip Kelly said Tuesday. That is believed to be the program's best GPA in recent memory.

Thomas capped his first school year on campus with a 4.0 GPA in the spring, UO running backs coach Gary Campbell said. Overall, more than half of the players on the UO roster posted a GPA of 3.0 — a "B" average — or better.

Kelly has raised the academic standards since becoming the UO head coach in 2009; all 64 players who have signed since then have qualified academically and enrolled in classes.

Kelly is known from time to time to surprise players by checking up on them in campus classrooms.

While there of course exceptions, the stereotype for jocks has always been of them taking easy classes. My guess is that Oregon's student athlete academic facilities allow their kids to be more efficient with their time. I've also noticed more kids having honor roll type HS grades

I think it's also a matter of staying more on top the players in the classroom.

A lot of the colleges let the athlete kids take tests with tutors.....
