Or so Kitzhaber wants you to be aware of.........

http://news.opb.org/article/12321-kitzhaber-ad-takes-aim-dudley/

Oregon Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Kitzhaber takes aim at his Republican opponent Chris Dudley in a new television ad that started airing Wednesday.

In it, Kitzhaber accuses Dudley of dodging Oregon taxes by living in Washington state when he played for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Chris Lehman fact-checked some of the claims in the ad.

The ad opens with a series of short clips of people wearing what the Kitzhaber campaign probably wants you to think of as looks of concern on their faces. It’s intercut with a black and white photo of Chris Dudley as an announcer tells us what everybody seems to be so concerned about.

Voiceover from ad: “OK, the job is governor and you’re hiring. You can hire Chris Dudley who has never managed anything. Never tried to create jobs to help Oregon’s families. And never shown much interest in Oregon. Because Dudley lived in Washington to avoid paying taxes that support our schools and health care.” Let's tackle that last claim.

Dudley spent 16 years in the NBA including two stints with the Portland Trail Blazers. It was during the first go-round -- a four season run in the mid-90’s -- that Dudley lived across the river in suburban Clark County. And by his own admission, Dudley lived there for tax purposes.

Here he is speaking during a debate broadcast on KGW television in April.

Chris Dudley: “I was 26, 27 years old. My accountant said you would save some dollars if you lived over here, and by the way, you’re 20 minutes from the arena and you’re living on a lake. So I did it.”

But the Dudley campaign points out what any cross-border commuter knows: that living in Washington and working in Oregon doesn’t get you out of paying Oregon income taxes.

Dudley’s campaign says the basketballer paid $460,000 in Oregon taxes during that time.

Of course, Dudley was not required to pay Oregon property taxes on his half-million dollar Washington home. And the state of Oregon would not have taxed him on any non-Oregon capital gains he earned while living in Washington.

The Dudley campaign did not provide an estimate on how much those taxes would have added up to.

I never liked Kitzhaber before.... but that's just weak.

"OMG, Dudley lived in Vancouver to dodge taxes!"

Like there aren't tens of thousands of people who do that as well. If you're in NE Portland on I-5 around rush hour, all you see is Washington plates going back across the bridge so they can dodge taxes.

So let me get this straight. Dudley made a sound financial decision, and that is supposed to make people not vote for him? Sounds to me like that is exactly the person Oregon needs to help right the sinking ship.

yeah, and those people can't vote in Oregon.

I think what's weak is the Dudley is too much of a bitch to show up to the debates that the republican and democratic candidates traditionally do every election. He has no experience doing anything like governing and is only running because the republican party had no one else and they wanted someone famous. This is ridiculous. It will make a mockery of Oregon if he is elected.

I've seen Dudley's old house, its on Prune Hill just north of Camas. Alan Embree, John Jaha and Greg Biffle all have houses in that area. Nice area, but places in Portland are better.

He couldn't do worse than Kitzhaber.

Dudley is a novice in politics. As such, one has to wonder how he might do. On the other hand, he's bright and has acted as the President of a union. I guess that counts for something.

I guess I see it this way. Although I voted for Kitzhaber twice I have to admit I was very disappointed in his performance as gov. Voting for him again would have been like voting for McCain- politics as usual and no new ideas. The same old mistakes. Allowing the SIU to run the state... Maybe we should try Dudley. Even if he makes mistakes, they'll be new ones.

How so? People always bring up Kitzhaber saying Oregon was ungovernable, but does anyone know the actual context? He said it because the government was mostly republicans who would sent shit to him for the sole purpose of making him veto it. He couldn't get anything done because of the republicans not letting him. Dudley knows nothing about Oregon, has no policies, and is so under qualified it's not even funny.

Could always go with a third part....... hahahahahahahahahha ;)

That's extremely naive if you believe it.

He's guaranteed to be a financially disastrous embarrassment to this state.

Even Duds knows he's not mentally up to the task, which is why he won't debate.

So a graduate from Yale who majored in Political Science and Economics is "guaranteed to be a financial embarrassment" to Oregon? The people in charge the last few years have certainly done a wonderful job with the budget. I mean there are countless schools cutting programs, talking about cutting days, and cutting hundreds of jobs. There are criminals that can walk immediately because of lack of funding. That state is so fucked up financially that something different needs to be done. Dudley may or may not be able to make a dent, but Johnny boy has proven he sure as hell won't.

Oregon could do a few things to help the economy right away

1. Oregon needs to bring in a non biased group to start cutting Government jobs.
2. Get rid of unions. There is absolutely no justification for companies to pay $25 and hour, pay over $3 an hour for pension, and get medical care that is virtually free for a non educated person to do a brainless job.
3. Get a fucking sales tax already. This would fund so many things, and you could probably write off what you sped on it for tax purposes.
4. Stop spending money on fucking bike lanes and other useless things. 700 milion for bike lanes and trams? Ya, that's money well spent

These are exactly the kind of stupid, (in some cases illegal) uselessly vague talking points that have been mentioned by non-Oregonians for decades. None of them have worked in other states and all of them involve penalizing poor people to carry the rich. They also reflect an ignorance of the disastrous effects that would ensue.

As for union wages and bennies, in most cases they are right about where the Federal minimum wage should be.

A guy with a shovel is worth far more to this country's survival than a fat cat on Wall Street.

I grew up in Oregon, and lived there for 40 years. I have worked there, California and Texas.

So the national minimum wage for this country should be 50k a year? LOL ok.

As for the shovel vs wall street, I couldn't agree more. However, most teachers don't make 50k a year for many. many years. Now tell me.....is someone who stocks grocery items on a palet worth more than somoene supposedly molding the mids of America's youth? Conversely, does a teacher who sucks, but has tenure deserve to make more, or even keep their damn job over a teacher who is wonderful and really cares but is only 26?

Unions now, promote lazines and protect bad employees. Hey, it doesn't matter if emplyee B is light years better and has twice the knowledge employee A has. Employee A was hired first.

A sales tax is a no-go MM. We already have property tax AND income tax. If we're going to bring in sales tax, one of the other taxes needs to go.

... and it only makes sense to do so. The current situation makes working a "crime" that is taxed - but does not bring income to the state's coffers from out-of-state residents that purchase staff in Oregon. The income over sales tax is one of the worst financial decisions the state of Oregon can make...

I haven't been exposed to a state that has all 3 taxes, but I know here in Texas we don't have an income tax, and I bring home a lot more money. I'm not sure how that helps or hurts the state though. Our property taxes are high here (5-6k a year) so that would be about the same.

Toll roads is another way for a city to make some quality income. In Houston, there are a couple of them, and I heard they earn about 1 million oer day. Portland's wouldn't be near that much, but if it brought in 50k a day, it would be huge. It's one of those taxes that you don't really feel the pain of because it's only like a quarter or two each way. In Oregon you could probably sharge a quarter per trip to downtown, and still make enough to fund several school programs. Then again, you could also do that by letting the Indians build a cassino in the city of Portland. I have also been a big proponent of legalizing gambling in some of the coastal, or central Oregon areas and allowing some cassinos to build there. Multiple jobs, and taxes from those would be tremendous.
