Hey guys, this summer I plan on eating alot healthier foods. I`m in good shape, I don`t smoke, drink, none of that. I`m about 150 right now, but I`m the guy that will eat cheesesteaks, cookies, candy, anytime he sees it. I just wanna be more fit and healthy, thats all.

Do you guys have any tips or links for getting in better shape and eating better foods? All help is welcome.

I've got all you need to know about losing weight, eating better or being healthy in general. What exactly do you want to do (goals, interests, etc), because there is so much to write about.

Well I really want to eat healthier, you know? I just wanna have a good food plan by the start of the new school year. Maybe if you could tell me some stuff start eating other than the obvious (veggies, fruits, etc.)?

Well you don't need to just eat veggies and fruits to be healthy. If you're a meat eater then chicken is the best thing. Here's a list of simple things to do.

- Go out and purchase a safe colon cleansing product (ex: Yerba Prima) from a vitamin shoppe
- Drink four regular sized bottles of water every day from now on
- Drink a glass of orange juice every day from now on
- Make sure you still consume dairy such as a yogurt (I like Dannon) or glass of milk (Skim or 1%)
- If you need a soda try to avoid drinking it with a heavy meal
- Only drink one soda or any other similar beverage per day
- Do not drink diet beverage products
- If you want to eat out go to a place that actually cooks the food correctly (ex: Quizno's, Chili's, etc)
- Do not eat out more then twice per week
- Eating beef is healthy, but try to limit it to one meal per week
- Do not eat anything at least four hours before you go to sleep
- Be sure to sleep at the least 8 hours per night with 9 being the best bet
- If you miss hours of sleep be sure to make up for them at a later date
- Pizza is healthy to eat if you eat it in moderation such as only once per month
- When you cook your chicken or other meats in a pan use extra virgin olive oil and not too much
- Exercise is your own option based on muscle gain (see below for good minimal options that work)
- Stay away from many sweets by limiting yourself to small portions after a lunch or dinner, but not both
- Try to avoid stress, tension or depression at all costs

Why do these things work?

Colon cleansing can help people (depending on situations) lose anywhere from 10 to 75 lbs of excess waste that the has built up in your body. Do not abuse this however as it can damage your natural way of using the toilets if you catch my drift. Take as directed on the packaging and try to avoid strong cleanses. Many people that have had colon cleanses often lose all interest in fast food places like McDonald's and Burger King, etc. This is because the body has been cleaned and now rejects unnatural oils and other things from being consumed correctly. This usually only works if you avoid eating at those places while cleansing.

Drinking four bottles of water every day also speeds up the cleansing of your body and makes you healthier. You'll often notice healthier skin tone, more energy and often sometimes even a better natural body odor depending on how well you're eating.

Orange Juice gives you your vitamins and dairy shouldn't need explaination

Drinking soda is fine, but be sure it is a regular one. Diet sodas carry artificial sweeteners that actually cause you to gain weight and not help you lose. Notice that many people drinking diet soda are overweight. Always avoid drinking soda during heavy meals because they contain a drug called High Fructose Corn Syrup. This drug cuts off signals from the stomach to the brain that tell you when you're naturally full. That is the only real danger of a single soda unless you're a diabetic then you should avoid soda all together. Try to avoid most products with High Fructose Corn Syrup if you can. Anything can have this drug including certain breads!

Eating late doubles or even triples CAL intake and results in weight gain or colon build up due to sleeping prohibiting your body from digesting correctly. Try to eat your last meal before 8PM and go to bed anytime between 10PM and 1AM. Again, just be sure to have eaten at least four hours before sleep. This may take some getting used to.

Good sleep energizes the body and in one of the most important aspects of becomming a healthier person and in fact a much happier one too.

Tomato red sauce has been known to prevent several types of cancer. Most notably colon cancer, which is becomming one of the leading causes of cancerous deaths in men. I hope you like your pizza with extra sauce!

If you want chicken recipes I can hook you up with some great ones for sandwiches and my mother's specialty of chicken, white rice, tomato sauce and garlic bread. I also have recipes for healthy pizza bread that you can eat up to twice per week for lunch meals. Also if you eat potato chips swich right away to baked versions of your favorites. I personally love Lay's baked chips with only 1.5 grams of fat per serving. However, don't be too hard on yourself for fat intake as depending on your body size we all need plenty of regular daily fat intake to remain healthy.

Some good regular exercise is to make sure you walk at least a half hour every day. Do two sets of 50 crunches per day and increase that number as you adjust and feel comfortable to do so. Do not overwork yourself or you will get injured even doing the lightest exercises! Be sure to stretch first as well. Cycling is another great option if you can do that. Anything else you would like to add feel free to do so on your own account

Sweets can be good for you, such as a glass of wine with chocolate every day extends your life. If you're not old enough for that, just eat chocolates or similar things in small moderation once per day if even that. Try to avoid artificial sweets and sore magnet sugar candies. Check all the labels of products that you would like to eat before you buy them. There are plenty of things you can eat that taste great and won't do any harm to your diet or new life style.

Finally the stress, tension and depression. Everyone has their own way of releving these problems, but however you do this be sure to do it often. These problems always cause relapses in your diet or life style.

I have thousands of other tips if you need to know more.

I giggle like a school girl at the words colon cleanser. I couldn't buy that with a straight face.

Better the pills then having it done the other way with a tube up your behind. lol

Haha, I do agree! Does it actually work? Do you poop a lot? (not you...in general, when you use the pills)

I didn't know high fructose corn syrup was that bad. I always drink a soda with heavy meals, especially burgers and BBQ, but I will have to stop that. I guess Cranberry Juice or Grape Drink

would be better.

My mom is a health freak and she uses extra virgin olive oil rather than canola oil or any other oil to cook food, put in salads and even turkey sandwiches. It has Omega 3 oil in it which is good for the brain. You really do know a lot about nutrition.

Limit yourself to complex carbs - that means no white bread, no candy, no sugar, no soda, no marmalade etc. Eat carbs like oatmeal, rice, pasta, potato, but do it in moderation.

Don't eat unhealthy fats, so avoid anything fried, meats with big chunks of fat on them (cut off the fat), no chips. Try to avoid animal fats in general. Good sources of fat are salmon, olive oil, flax seed oil, peanut butter (eat in moderation, since the fat you get from this is pretty common in peoples diets anyway). Try to look for foods with omega-3 in them.

Eat good sources of protein, like chicken, turkey, extra lean beef, salmon, tuna. Try to avoid meats with too much fat on them, and if you have to eat them, cut off the fat.

So just avoid fast food places and late night snacks, along with soda, and your diet will improve a lot.

lay off the salt shaker and try not to drink soda. also try to eat around 4-5 medium sized meals instead of 3 huge ones.

Keep a big cup/bottle of water nearby at all times. Don't eat out a lot, and don't buy junk food. Find healthy food you like.

LOL at mamba's post, "do you poop alot?" hahaha. funny post, anyway those colon cleanser things fuk your system up dont they? i mean they cleanse your insides but they have bad effects so i wouldnt use them unless your really unhealthy. sit-ups are really good for you. i noticed about a month ago i had started to gain some unwanted fat around my stomach, i still weighed only 65kg but i was out of shape, so i just started doing 20 push ups and 20 sit ups in the morning after a shower and now im back in the shape i was when i was playing top competition basketball (that was about 2 years ago in the 4th highest league in australia). its really easy if you have already played sport and your not overweight, but if you are really really lazy and unhealthy its probably alot harder. also basketball is probably the best exercise in the world so just do more of that.

Situps just build your stomach muscles. If you've got fat there though, it's not really going to burn it. It'll just give you a bigger belly because you have that same fat, except now you've got a lot of muscle under it.

But yeah, if your main focus is to look good on the outside, excercise will do the trick more than anything.

Exactly. It has been proven that spot reduction is impossible, so doing situps won't burn fat off your abs alone, but the fat (if fat burning is even involved) will be taken from all over the body.

Altered crunches are better then sit ups, but not much for losing your small stomach. Simple exercise is best. Anything that gets your entire body in motion.

<div class="quote_poster">Mamba Wrote</div><div class="quote_post">Haha, I do agree! Does it actually work? Do you poop a lot? (not you...in general, when you use the pills)</div>

Yeah, first time use with a balanced eating regiment can cause you to run to the toilet up to six times per day the first few weeks. Also you notice that your feces look very thin and discolored often. That is because it is excess waste that has built up over years. I highly suggest anyone, thin or fat, use these cleansers and I particularly like Yerba Prima. You can get YP at Vitamin Shoppe, GNC, or other health stores. They may not carry it in store, but just ask them to order the Men's version for you even if they haven't heard of it and in about two or three weeks they'll have it for you anyway. Do not accept poor substitutes! Yerba Prima runs around 21 dollars for a month's worth. After you use up the package, do not use it again for at least three months.

Thanks, I agree sodas taste great for burgers and BBQ, but if you know your limits then you can drink sodas with those meals again. The way to figure this is to eat those foods with other drinks without High Fructose Corn Syrup and when you're full be sure to remember how much you ate. Also I forgot to mention to try and avoid getting to the point when you're really hungry before you eat if you can. That always causes us to eat more then we normally would and of course, eat at a good pace and always try to sit down. Standing and eating isn't good for digestion.

To tell you the truth I'm not a health freak or anything, I just really care for my body now because I used to be very careless and overweight as a teenager. At one point years ago my weight was at 333 lbs and I'm only just over 6' tall. Then I had a point where I seen my horrible eating and drinking habits and instead of crying about it I just stopped everything at once. I starting following those new habits and in a span of a few months I lost well over 100 lbs. I hardly felt anything changing because it wasn't so drastic, which is great. I've given this plan to a few other people and they've all had similar results. Even if you don't want to lose weight and just get in better shape you don't have to worry because this only kills weight that shouldn't be there.

If you want recipes I'll post them here for you all when I get back home because I can't remember the name of some of the ingrediants I use in some meals. They are all very simple to make. Oh and finally, I should add that Trader Joe's is basically the best place you can buy your produce. Try to find one in your area because many of the ingrediants I use are sold from that store only. Also if you have pets, buy their organic pet foods too.

lol, the colon cleanser thing reminded me of the Simpsons.

Homer: "Hey, Apu, you got any of those potato chips that give you diarrhea? I need to do a little... spring cleaning."

Seriously though, those were all great posts. I find just doing exercises that work your whole body are the most effective: running, swimming, skipping, boxing, and most of the team sports. I don't have many problems with my diet since I'm vegetarian, but I think M pointed out some things that most people don't take into consideration. Getting enough sleep and eating at the right times with the right portions is very important. Also, its good to keep hydrated.

Some recipes would be cool, the chicken sandwich and pizza dishes sound good.

I don't think there is a Trader Joes in Houston. I am pretty sure it is similar to Central Market and Whole Foods Market though.

Try to see if those places are International traders like Trader Joe's. Look for Trader Giotto's fat free pizza sauce and basil & garlic tomato sauce. There is absolutely no substitute to their flavor based on store bought brands I have tried so far. However, if one of those places you have there carries the exact same style sauces of a different brand you trust then buy those. Prego and all those big names aren't good substitutes.

Try the Trader Joe's website to search for close store locations.

I started going to the sauna at my gym this week and it cleared up my acne. In between 3 reps of my workout, I hoop, and then I go to the sauna for 10-15 minutes. It really loosens you up as well which makes me feel like playing more pickup games or do more reps. If you want to use a product, anything with sulfur kills pimples.

Gotchya. I don't think they have a Trader Joes coming to Houston any time soon, but I will look for it, if not a similar brand of tomato sauce. What about the dough? Should I just use flour, yeast, water, and olive oil?

For the pizza bread? Just buy regular sub sandwich buns at your local grocery or baker. Make sure that they bake well in a toaster oven. I'll give you the full recipe when I get back home on what to do, but make sure you have cinnamon powder available. You'll also need Mrs Dash spices and I'll let you know which exactly when I return home. Mrs Dash spices also go into the chicken. Btw, do you like garlic? It is important for the pizza bread as well.

I'm not the healthiest eater myself but my problem is moreso gaining weight; I need to get gain atleast 10-15 pounds (of muscle, preferably). My eating habits are quite bad...I don't mind eating healthy food but regardless of whether I eat frequently or infrequently, my weight almost always stays the same. It's kind of frustrating actually, but I don't really mind being skinny for the time being. I'm assuming I will gain the weight once my metabolism slows down anyway.

To all the posters who've contributed to the thread with information, you guys are of great help.

I always had the same problem, but this is how to gain the weight. Eat larger portions and less time per day. Load up on the carbs. It takes a couple of weeks for your body to adjust, but you'll start noticing changes in about a month.

Your going to need to consume more calories then you burn. Assuming that you are a bigger eater with a fast metabolism like myself. Make sure to lift weights 3 times a week. I'd reccomend protein shakes, they helped me alot with gaining weight. Eat every 2 hours along with a protein shake after workout and you should be on your way to gaining weight. Also try and stay away from too much cardio.

I would assume that that is what happens.

I remember, 2 years ago at Halloween, my friend decided to give out Colon Chocolate, it like makes you crap, so all these kids got this chocolate, and most of the kids next day at school had mad stomach problems.

The tube thing, well doesn't work to much, I was watching Adventures in HollyHood, a show on MTV about Three 6 Mafia, and Project Pat and some other dude, went to that and the other dude did the Tube, and it didn't help him to much.

You're getting your 'medical information' from MTV about a hip hop group? Right. Actually that "tube thing" works, but can be dangerous to your body if not done correctly. It also costs quite a bit and isn't a natural option. That "colon chocolate" is actually a laxative that makes you crap, it doesn't cleanse anything in your body. People take those when they have irregularity.

In all honesty, I only eat about 2 meals per day, and the reason for that is because my schedule is kind of f'd up. I'm in my last year of high school (well, 2 weeks to go now), and I constantly wake up late for school (from sleeping late), so I rush out of the house without eating to get to school, and usually I don't have money for lunch (when I do, I obviously buy lunch), nor do I get to pack lunches the mornings. So, basically, my first meal of the day comes around 4 PM in the afternoon, and that's followed by a bunch of small snacks and what not for the rest of the time before I eat a bigger meal for dinner. I actually manage to eat even before I sleep, which apperently helps gain weight as well. The problem though is that, I don't think I'm eating nearly enough, no matter the quantity of the meal I consume. I doubt 2 (big) meals is even going to cut it for someone with high metabolism such as myself.

During the summer, I'm more free and I'm expecting to gain atleast 5-10 pounds in the 2 month period, and I will be sure to eat more. I'm not great at balancing things out, especially when it comes to diet, and my habits indicate that.

When you say 2 hours, do you mean eating small portioned meals (i.e- light sandwiches, or perhaps fruits, etc) every two hours or heavier amounts of food? My brother actually works out (he used to be quite skinny till about 19, and then he started gaining weight...now he is 180 or so with a huge build), so I do have protein powder for shakes lying around the house.

Yeah there's no chance of gaining weight with that schedule. Why don't you work on not staying up so late, and waking up an hour earlier to get some food in you stomach in the morning.

I stopped drinking protein shakes awhile ago because they made me feel like crap. Like bloated and blah. I think it's because they're so thick. Sometimes I'd mix the powder with milk, half a banana, and some fruit in the magic bullet and make a chocolate fruit smoothie thing and that was pretty good. But regular shakes make me feel like crap.

If you want to gain weight, my suggestion is to eat at the very least 4 times per day (preferably 6 or more), and work out at least 2-3 times per week.

Eating fewer but larger portions high in carbs will make you gain weight for sure, but that weight will be fat. Excess carbs are stored as fat.
