The economy and uncertain financing has delayed Bruce Ratner's $4 billion plan for a new NBA arena for the Nets in Brooklyn.

Groundbreaking has been pushed back at least a year, which means that the Nets wouldn't be able to move from New Jersey until the 2011 season at the earliest.

"Let me be clear," Ratner said last month, "that the project will go forward."

Financial experts and state and city officials who have heard the developer's private pleas for more government aid say the failing economy has created a far bleaker picture for the project.

It aint happening. Not in this disaster of an economy. In years past, maybe.

Nor should it happen. If Ratner wants to build something, find a way to pay for it. Don't have the taxpayers kick in money to kick other taxpayers out of their houses at below market value.
