From the latest issue of ESPN Magazine, Mashahiro Tanaka is the Cover Story-tho' there are few real details, here are the gest of them.
Included below, are more in depth details about the increase of Zack Greinke's improving performance, in the last couple years. (I still say why did Cashman Slumber when Rome was burning, and Greinke flew to L.A.) - (see**** for explanation, or how Cashman let NY burn while he slept).
Tanaka:
With 2 strikes and 2 Outs, Tanaka’s average fastball velocity increases 2 mph to 93.3 with RISP.
As the Ace of his High School All Star Team, Masahiro met Hideki Matsui in Yankee Stadium. A planned event for the Japanese Team, touring America in 2006.
Prior to Masahiro’s last outing:
With RISP, opposing batters were 3 for 29 with 17 K’s. With RSIP and 2 outs, hitters were 2 for 16.
Tanaka struck out 51 in his first 42 2/3rds innings, fourth most in MLB History, for any pitcher in his first 6 starts.
In the Japanese World Series game last fall, Masahiro threw 160 pitches.
Tanaka throw 24 of his pitches as splitters.
With RISP, and 2 strikes he’s thrown his splitter 53% of the time.
Fat Ass-Shrek (David Ortiz) was quoted: “I’ve never seen a pitcher throw that many splitters, never”.
Tanaka holds and throws his splitter differently than any other pitcher, (according to David Cone, and a few other MLB pitchers).
Tanaka doesn’t hold the ball deep into his fingers or palm, he leaves room between the ball and his fingers, while snapping his wrists along with his elbow. Traditionally a slider, splitter, entails snapping
Greinke:
20 Consecutive Games, Greinke started at least 5 innings, allowing two runs or less. the longest such streak since 1900. When the run finally entered on May 5th, it took intervention from the heavens. Greinke was forced from start in Washington after just 3 innings by a rain delay of more than 3 hours.
4 Consecutive season in which Grenke’s ERA has fallen from 4.17 in 2010 to 2.35 this year. Since last July 30th, spanning those 20 starts, the L.A. Right Hander has posted a miniscule 1.72 ERA, 2nd best in all baseball to Marlins phenom Jose Fernandez 1.35. (as we all know Jose is out for 12-18 months with TJ surgery, a sad time for MLB fans-Fernandez is sorely missed by more than his team, we miss the “slider from hell”).
55.8% MLB best Z-Swing%. (the percentage of pitches inside the zone hitters swing at), by Greinke this season. Couple that with this nearly league-leading 0-Swing% (the pitches outside the zone hitters swing at), and Greinke’s plan is clear. Make hitters swing at his pitches not theirs.
11.2% Swinging -strike percentage in 2014, highest of Greinke’s career and top 15 mark among MLB starters. What’s more, his career high strikeouts per-nine-innings rate of 11.0% is an increase of 3K’s over his career average. His K/9 rate is fourth best in the majors.
3.27 Difference in inches, in the vertical movement of Greinke’s slider from 2012. To this season a change he attributes to ending his experiment with a similarly gripped cutter. His 19.2 swinging strike percentage on the slider has nearly doubled from last years 11.9
0 Season’s by a pitcher over the past decade that have been more valuable than Greinke’s Cy Young Campaign of 2009. Based on AWAR, the last pitcher to top Greinke’s 10.4 mark was Randy Johnson in 2004.
*** Cashman slept, allowing these f'kd up worthless trades to line L.A.'s pockets. How would Greinke Fare as a Yankee, right now I believe he'd loom large:
Greinke: Traded by the Kansas City Royals with Yuniesky Betancourt and cash to the Milwaukee Brewers for Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar, Jeremy Jeffress and Jake Odorizzi. (Did the Royals get a steal, or were they simply stocking their Minor League Clubs).
Greinke: Traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for Ariel Pena (minors), Johnny Hellweg and Jean Segura. (wow, the Brew-Ha's really made out, NOT).
Either, the Brewer's and Angel's Directors of Player Development, and Farm Clubs, don't know talent when they see it, or blindly need to be replaced. Mis-juding a Cy Young Pitcher, while over-rating career minor leaguer's aka No-bodies.
October 29, 2012: Granted Free Agency.
December 10, 2012: Signed as a Free Agent with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Signed to a 13.5 Million $$ deal, 19 Mill in 2013, 26 Mill in 2014, 25 Mill in 2015, BUT MAY OPT OUT OF CONTRACT IN 2015.
