nothing that wasn't already known. doctors have addressed the stiffness and have already said it will take a year to be 100% back to what he was...this is not newsbreaking

Best start looking for a potential quality replacement at a reasonable price, this is when you wish someone in the system were ready to come forward and give it a run.

I know what the Dr's have said, but I seriously doubt that he'll be productive again... Defensively adequate, but not offensively...

It cracks me up that the Yankees spend a half a billion on new players, grabbing every great free agent not named Cano, making the team a force again, and fans complain about the backup 1B.... is this a joke?

...yup, and what has yet to be explained is why there should be such a rush to spend the money on another 1Bman that may not even play if Tex is able to play?

...it's not like an emergency 1Bman would be hard to find if one is in fact needed.

I am more concerned with Jeter than I am Tex. As Big Al said, the fact that the wrist is not 100% is not news. I only hope that Jeter will not let his ego ruin his legacy by refusing to transition to 3B if its for the good of the team. No shortstop has done what he is trying to accomplish at his age. I remember watching Aparicio play his final year and it was ugly. If I was Hal, I'd call Boras and sign Drew, tell Jeter to follow Ripken to 3B and solve 2 problems at once.

...Drew is an average SS who wants above average money for multiple years.

If I am Jeter I would say..why push me out until I prove I am whether or not I am a LIABILITY at SS. he moves to third he becomes an average 3b hitter

Who will be on the market over the next 3 years. Tulowitzki is a maybe? Drew would bridge a gap I feel. He is considered an above average SS who with hitting lefthanded would benefit from the Stadium.

The Yankees could certainly have another season of injuries, looking around the roster there are plenty of risks including Tex, but considering the money they have on the field it's far from fair to expect them to go out and start grabbing decent backups, decent backups cost money, it's not happening, this is the team, cross your fingers, and if the hammer drops get ready for guys off the heap.

...Drew is a career .264 .329 OBP hitter...and is virtually useless vs LHed pitching. He also has not managed to play more than 124 games (last year) since 2010. He also strikes out way too often and YS won't help him that much unless he gets suckered into thinking he's some sort of HR hitter, which he's clearly not.
...he's also average defensively. And his range will only decline since he'll be 31 before the season starts and again he's wanting a multi-year deal.

...I'm not saying he's a bad player, he's not. But I'm just not impressed with anything he does.

I'll reserve comment on Tex until we see him in the spring.

I like where his head is at. Grounded in reality and managing expectations. This is all part of the process. ST is going to busy between the Japanese press and the wanna be docs following every TeX and Jete move.

Whether Tex can go 140+ games at 1b the Yankees STILL need a back up 1st baseman. Even if its only to relieve Tex for 25-30 games a year. I mean to the best of my knowledge NO OTHER TEAM is going into the season without a back up 1st baseman.

...one more time, 1Bmen are not exactly a scarce commodity...and we are still a long way off until opening day.

...ST should give Tex and the Yanx plenty of time to assess his status...someone please explain why there is such a rush to sign a bench player for the least significant position on the field?

Oh I don't know, could it possibly be because Tex has missed over 185 games over the last 2 seasons.? But hey, that's just me.

And if 1st baseman are so easy to come by, name 3 that the Yankees could pick up as backups without spending to much. Just curious.

...are you fucking serious?...do you seriously want me to waste my time looking for backup 1Bmen?

...and do you seriously think that IF Tex cannot play, the Yanx will not be able to find someone to play 1B?

...again, opening day is 2 months away...worrying over a backup 1Bman?...unbelievable.

But you didn't pick 3, lol. The Yankees are right to wait and see what they have toward the end of spring training. There is a lot of movement at that time as teams scramble to make the 25 man rosters. Rick, I'm sure the Yankees share the same concerns as you. Tex has given them reason with the injuries that have kept him off the field the last couple of years, but I could see maybe as many as 3 new players being added to the roster before opening day. I see an outfielder/1B, and relief as possibly areas of upgrades during Spring Training. In addition, a trade involving Gardner for SP still would not shock me.

...^^^yup, and I'm sure that by opening day the Yanx will either have a warm body on the bench to take Tex's place if he has a relapse until they can find a better every day 1Bman...I also agree about the addition of another reliever/closer.
...I've been saying that Gardner may be on the block for awhile now but now that Tanaka has been secured I've tempered my thinking on the idea.
...and as has been discussed, we may see Tex hitting RHed vs certain RHed pitcher in certain situations...the reasoning is that his surgically repaired wrist is under more stress when hitting LHed.

Holy elephant balls Ron, are you serious with that list. I only went through A & B (29 names) and 17 of them aren't in baseball reference which means they've never played a major league game. Of the other 12, Here's a few that you mentioned..........

Lars Anderson = a career 167 hitter who hasn't played since 2012
Michael Aubrey, Jeff Bailey, Kevin Barker & Aaron Bates haven't played since 2009
Jason Botts hasn't played since 2008
Russell Branyan hasn't played since 2011
Brandon Belt is currently going through arbitration with the Giants & there's no way they let him get away.

And if I continued to check that joke of a list I'm sure I'll find more of the same. Hell if that list is all that's available I'd rather the Yankees give Boog Powell a call to back up 1st base.

Don't be surprised to see Cervelli getting some reps at 1B in ST. Gardner is staying. We'll see lots of Ellsbury/Gardner double steals in 2014, maybe even a swipe of home.

I can read tea leaves too.

...uhhh, did you missed the part where I said "it only took about 30 seconds"?....like I said, why should I "waste my time looking for backup 1Bmen" that you asked for?...I didn't even look at the list. Instead I simply googled and then copied and pasted...if you want to waste your time sifting through that list, be my guest, but don't tell me there are not 3 viable players on that list.

I've no doubt we could find 3 players on that list but do the Yankees really want to settle for a career 220 hitter who hasn't played in the majors in a few years to back up Tex? But hell like you mentioned it's still early yet so hopefully the Yankees will be able to find a decent back up.

settle, no, but he'd be a back-up for a reason... because something happened to the primary.... if he was a 270+ hitter, he probably wouldn't be a back-up... so if you need someone to play the position other than your primary, you won't have much to choose from...

always could catch lightning in a bottle, but very unlikely

JMO but its for reasons like this that I think the Yankees should have resigned Overbay. Granted not exactly a gold glover but he'd still be better then anyone on that shit list & it wouldn't have cost the Yankees very much. But, that ship has sailed.

...again, we're talking about a "backup", not a full time 1Bman. A backup is only for giving Tex a rest if needed ...or in the event Tex goes down, to be the interim 1Bman until they can make arrangement for a full time replacement.

...and Jesus tap dancing Christ, that list was just to prove a point...if Tex cannot play at all, I'm sure they can acquire a more suitable replacement.

I'm well aware that we're talking about a BACK UP. And for what its worth Jesus NEVER tap danced, He was more a Charlston type guy.
