If you can pick one song that is without a doubt your favorite rock tune, what is it?

I like many but if I had to choose only one it'd be:

Foo Fighters - Everlong

It isn't exactly the hardest rocking Nirvana song ever and it is a cover but this is my favorite song of all time. The Foo Fighters should have never been allowed to form but sadly that is the reality we live in.

Tonight, it's "Down In The Tube Station At Midnight" by The Jam

Tomorrow, I think it will be "We Should Send Letters" by Aztec Camera

Ask a 4 year old for his favorite color, and he'll usually say red. By the time he's about 7, it's blue or something. Ask a 16 year old for his favorite song, and he'll have one. Years later, he keeps them all together in the collegial, unranked part of his memory.

For one year, it was "For Your Love" by the Yardbirds. For another year, it was "Friday On My Mind" by the EasyBeats. Anyone know those songs?

Sure, both great '60s songs. The Yardbirds are criminally underrated from that era.

Another great, underrated '60s song:

and this just barely scratches the surface... a better question would narrow it down by genre

Wow. I'd never heard that before, but it is so perfectly representative of that time...

Like many have said there are just to many, but the first one I thought of is Paranoid, love that whole album.

What about songs like sound of silence or the fighter, is that rock or folk songs?

To many to chose from. Wish you were here.

Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve.

I remember hearing it in Amsterdam the day after I met the woman I'd eventually marry. Seemed to be playing everywhere we went.

You heard it long before Amsterdam if you ever heard the Andrew Oldham Orchestra's version of the Rolling Stones' "The Last Time".

As a big blues fan its hard to pick a favorite "Rock" song. I mean some of my favorite songs are played with only hand-claps. But this song, a cover of the great Robert Johnson, would be near the top of my list.

I wasn't aware of the back story until this thread made me google it. Man, the Rolling Stones and ABKO Records come off as douches:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitter_Sweet_Symphony#Song_credits

Originally, The Verve had negotiated a licence to use a sample from the Oldham recording, but it was successfully argued that the Verve had used 'too much' of the sample.[5] Despite having original lyrics, the music of "Bitter Sweet Symphony" is partially based on the Oldham track, which led to a lawsuit with ABKCO Records, Allen Klein's company that owns the rights to the Rolling Stones material of the 1960s. The matter was eventually settled, with copyright of the song reverting to ABKCO and songwriting credits to Jagger and Richards.
"We were told it was going to be a 50/50 split, and then they saw how well the record was doing," says band member Simon Jones. "They rung up and said 'we want 100 per cent or take it out of the shops', you don't have much choice."[6]
After losing the composer credits to the song, Richard Ashcroft commented, "This is the best song Jagger and Richards have written in 20 years."[7]
...
In a Cash For Questions interview with Q magazine published in January 1999, Keith Richards was asked if he thought it was harsh taking all The Verve's royalties from "Bitter Sweet Symphony" to which he replied, "I'm out of whack here, this is serious lawyer shit. If The Verve can write a better song, they can keep the money."
Kind of an interesting story. Anyway, I just watched the video for the first time.

I consider this to be my all time favorite rock song.

Curt Boettcher is a forgotten genius of that period, close to the level of Brian Wilson, Ray Davies, Phil Spector or Paul McCartney/John Lennon, in my opinion.

He wrote, sang and produced for a number of groups (the most famous of which was The Association unless you count his minimal work with the Beach Boys) and his early work influenced other great song-writers of the time. If you get a chance to find it to listen, I'd highly recommend the album Begin by The Millennium, his finest '60s band in my estimation. I think Begin is a landmark album, a top-ten album of the era. Just as you said about that song (which isn't on the album, it was for another of his groups), the album feels like it meshes everything good about that musical era. But it doesn't sound derivative at all, to me...it was a piece with the times, equal parts influence and influenced.
