"On the good side of the ledger, the Nets got injured point guard Devin Harris back and got an impressive post performance from center Brook Lopez. But rookie Derrick Favors got a lesson from Boston's superstar Kevin Garnett, and the Nets ended up with a 96-92 preseason loss to the Celtics.

After bruising his fifth metatarsal in Sunday's preseason game against. Maccabi Haifa, Harris had eight points and four assists in 21 pain-free minutes, saying "I feel fine. Perfect. Superb. Great."

But the Nets had fattened up on an Israeli team and a so-so 76ers squad; the physical Celtics showed just where the work was needed.

Nets coach Avery Johnson looked forward to the lessons the 19-year-old Favors would learn last night. There were many, as Garnett sealed him often in the early going and the Celtics went at him in pick-and-rolls late. With a Denver scout watching on -- Favors had been the centerpiece in a proposed Carmelo Anthony deal -- he had just three points on 1-of-6 shooting with six fouls.

"[He's] just struggling with some fouls. That's the NBA, and that's what preseason is all about," Johnson said of Favors. "He's talented, he's just going through some growing pains, as we expected.""
