Houston Chronicle columnist Jonathan Feigen, writing for Hoopsworld, has some advice for Rod Thorn: Forget rebuilding, just try to make this team work. Feigen says that there is &ldquo;no halfway for the Nets&rdquo;. If they trade Jason Kidd, they will have to trade Vince Carter as well, and his value will drop as soon as Kidd leaves. Instead, he advises, make this team work or wind up like the Celtics before KG.</p>

It's my belief that trading either one would signify a rebuilding process, depending on who is dealt to the Nets. In that situation I could see the second person's trade value dipping, regardless of who it is.</p>

The traditional wisdom is that Kidd somehow has built Vince's career (even though he played 5 all star seasons before coming to Jersey) and that Kidd somehow keeps enough of a foot up Vince's butt to make him perform more consistently near his potential. The first is definitely not true and I don't think there's much to the second one either. Kidd has not proved to be the kind of guiding/motivational force that, say, Charles Oakley was during the years he played with Carter.</p>

Though younger, I think the guy with the most potential in that area is Richard Jefferson, and I actually think he is proving to be the team's best all-round leader. He plays hard every game; plays through injury; is vocal when he should be; is honest enough to tell the truth even when it hurts but also indefatigably upbeat; he's quick witted; and is now forging enough credibility as an elite player to assume ultimate leadership of a team. As long as RJ stayed, I think it would be fine to trade Kidd and not trade Carter. And it would certainly free the purse strings up to actually sign some more quality players.</p>

I agree about the &ldquo;no halfway for the Nets&rdquo;. If they want to make a run in the East, then make the moves necessary for it. Either play Sean Williams and give him a chance to show he's a present and future regular starter for this team or trade him and get a big that can help now.</p>

I think you're wrong. If the Nets trade Kidd they will be looking for youth and cap relief, IMHO. If that is the case they will be rebuilding the team, likely around Jefferson, Krstic and the Williams's. Even if they can manage a quick rebuild an aging wing with a heavy contract probably doesn't fit into their plans, thus, if Kidd is traded, shipping out an unhappy Carter would be a likely follow-up.</p>

Considering the Nets faced virtually no competition for Carter's services this summer, actually finding a trading partner that will give the Nets more than scraps is another dilemma.</p>

I'd call it a seriously flawed team, worse than the current team, that needed to be blown up.</p>

It means rebuilding because the team isn't anywhere close to being a title level team as it is now and Kidd is only getting shipped out if Rod finally comes to the logical conclusion that he needs to start over.</p>

I'd ship him out because he's a cancer, and as a lesson to the other players not to question management. Of course, I'd also send him to a team he diesn't want to go to,.</p>
