I believe he was number one last year as well, although I am not sure.

Edit: Oh, guess I was wrong.

Do you think he made it all just sneaking people across the border and landscaping?

He has monopolies in Mexico, especially in Telecom.

Nahh, I'm pretty sure it would have had to been by the way of heavy-handed, extortionary methods. ;)

My Dad sent me this.....

  • Americans spend $36,000,000 at Wal-Mart Every hour of every day.
  • This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!
  • Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.
  • Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target + Sears + Costco + K-Mart combined.
  • Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people and is the largest private employer, and most speak English.
  • Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the World.
  • Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger & Safeway combined, and keep in mind they did this in only 15 years.
  • During this same period, 31 supermarket chains sought bankruptcy.
  • Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the world.
  • Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906 are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had 5 Years ago.
  • This year 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will occur At a Wal-Mart store. (Earth's population is approximately 6.5 Billion.).
  • 90% of all Americans live within 15 miles of a Wal-Mart.

Its pretty crazy because I never really see walmarts that much around. Target and Home Depot are everywhere...must be the Midwest where they all are.

:shudder:

Wal-Mart is also the largest single employer of illegal immigrants in the USA.

Also up until 1985 Wal-Mart used to advertise that everything they sold was "Made in America".

What's your point? Sure ain't gonna keep me from shopping there. Nor you. ;)

I have only shopped at Wal-Mart a few times. I find many of their products to be substandard. While they have the same brand names as other retailers their buying power allows them to order a version of a manufacturer's product that is of a lesser quality that is sold by the same manufacturer to other retailers. Just because Wal-Mart has it for a cheaper price than other retailers doesn't mean that it is the same product or even it is the same quality and or size or portion. This happens primarily in clothing and electronics but also in other areas such as food.

Also I don't like the way they treat their employees. They try to have as many part time workers as possible to avoid giving benefits and even those benefits are substandard compared to other large retailers in the industry. I understand that this is one of the ways that they provide "low prices". I like Costco personally. They are much more supportive of local and regional products and they treat their employees much more fairly. The majority of the employees are full time and the benefits provided are far superior.

As of March 2008[update], non-supervisory hourly wages ranged from $11.00 to $20.50.

In the US, eighty-five percent of Costco's workers have health insurance, compared with less than fifty percent at Walmart and Target.

Also I like to support local and regional based businesses whenever it makes sense for me to do so as a consumer. Also I've had much better experiences returning something at Costco then I have at Wal-Mart.

Hey, I understand why people love Wal-Mart. I'm just not a fan.

Generally speaking, I only buy groceries there. Freddies, Safeway, and QFC's prices are too high. WINCO is too far away. :dunno:

+1 to all of these points. Same reason I shop at Costco/Safeway and other local grocery/retail stores in my area.

Safeway? Local?

Hmmm...........

I find Safeway expensive. I do like their produce departments. Not so much for price or selection but mainly for atmosphere. The dim overhead lighting as the fine water mist falls through the bright blue'ish lights that hang directly over the fruit and veggy's. It's like being being in a disco surrounded by fog machines.

Darned good reason to shop there.

And coincidentally 28 Chinese became billionaires this year!

BUY AMERICAN or die in a Chinese prison.

I don't shop there, nor do my sons.

By shopping there you forfeit your right to complain about the US economy, as you are the cause of it's demise.

No way. Shopping there allows me more money to spend elsewhere. As I had mentioned above, I generally only purchase groceries there.
