I got a FitBit One on Sept 9 last year. The thing tracks how many steps I take per day, how many flights of stairs, how many calories burned, who fit my sleep is each night.

It cost $99. The iPhone App is free. It ties in with MyFitnessPal.com, too, which I use to track what I eat.

Since Sept, I've walked 500 miles and taken 1.1 million steps.

I've taken to walking a lot lately. A minimum of 10,000 steps is recommended by doctors. For me, that's about 4.5 miles, and it takes me 80 minutes. I often do a second walk or do extended walks. 10,000 steps is really on the low side of what I've been doing. More like 20,000 steps today, and a lot of 8 mile or even 12 mile days.

In the process, I've lost 10 lbs and put on some muscle, especially in my legs. The beauty of combining all this walking, FitBit, and MyFitnessPal is that I'm burning so many calories through exercise that I can eat a huge dinner, a Chicago style Pizza, a loaded burrito, etc. so the dieting isn't eating carrots and celery stalks and other near zero calorie foods.

My blood pressure is down and so is my cholesterol.

I'm still a non smoker for a year and a half now, too. Stopping helped me put on a few pounds. Now I'm shedding them.

I've never understood the metric system, how many mikes are in a mile?

But congrats, sounds like you're doing good.

If it helps someone else get fit, why not?

Walking or swimming are the best! My wife and I have been avid hikers and walkers for 25 years and we both stay fit. We never used any apps or needed them. 45 minutes of power walking and 45 minutes of yoga at the end of the day is the fountain of youth if you want to stay in shape. On our days off we walk for hours in the woods. It's good advice Denny and it works. Glad you quit smoking, that's a really important step. I also got rid of my chair at work and use my computer at a standing station. My trainer from my sports days told my to never sit for more than 45 minutes without taking a stroll.

Yep. I walk alone half the time, listening to tunes on my iPhone and earbuds. It's even better when me and the wife walk together.

I had a nike fuel band. Don't really use it that much, I don't know where it is. Whenever I go to Vegas, I wake up, check the time and I've already reached my daily goal.

probably will get the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 when it comes out and that is integrated.

Hey, I'm just teasing you for trying to drive ad revenue this way through product discussions.

I find BGD's basketball posts to be naive, but he's a good guy. The OT threads he starts are amazingly good.

We have an OT section to talk among the community about non-basketball topics, no? Screw the ad revenue. I'd rather have ads that are interesting to our viewers than have ads to make money.

I thought my response to you was pretty clever.

I thank you for the ad comment. I think it's nice to have a great OT section, but some of BGD posts look to be fishing for clicks. I repped you for your response to my first comment.

What does he have to gain by clicks?

His latest thread about the new phone with dual screens might help HCP embrace his nerdity.

I've always liked to walk for exercise, but being in the industry I'm in, I get a lot of empty calories from booze. I'm currently doing P90x3, and it's actually a pretty solid workout. 30-40 minutes per day, I eat healthy (which I already do anyway, aside from the booze)...... this has been easy. 45 days in (today is #46), 13 pounds dropped, and I've been gaining muscle tone. I might have to check the FitBit out. I'd be curious what info it provides related to my current workout routine.

This looks like a promising alternative to Fitbit. Rather than just track your steps/movements, this is adaptable to help assist you in you exercise. If you run, you strap it to your ankle to measure stride, impact, etc. If you are doing pushups, you strap it to your biceps. Boxing, strap it to your wrist. It can track how much of the exercise you're doing as well as give you real time advice through an app. It comes to iOS in the summer and then Android in the fall.
