Flu Has Disappeared Worldwide during the COVID Pandemic

The public health measures that slow the spread of the novel coronavirus work really well on influenza

Since the novel coronavirus began its global spread, influenza cases reported to the World Health Organization have dropped to minuscule levels. The reason, epidemiologists think, is that the public health measures taken to keep the coronavirus from spreading also stop the flu. Influenza viruses are transmitted in much the same way as SARS-CoV-2, but they are less effective at jumping from host to host.

As Scientific American reported last fall, the drop-off in flu numbers was both swift and universal. Since then, cases have stayed remarkably low. “There’s just no flu circulating,” says Greg Poland, who has studied the disease at the Mayo Clinic for decades. The U.S. saw about 600 deaths from influenza during the 2020-2021 flu season. In comparison, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated there were roughly 22,000 deaths in the prior season and 34,000 two seasons ago.

Because each year’s flu vaccine is based on strains that have been circulating during the past year, it is unclear how next year’s vaccine will fare, should the typical patterns of the disease return. The WHO made its flu strain recommendations for vaccines in late February as usual, but they were based on far fewer cases than in a common year. At the same time, with fewer virus particles circulating in the world, there is less chance of an upcoming mutation, so it is possible the 2021–2022 vaccine will prove extra effective.

Public health experts are grateful for the reprieve. Some are also worried about a lost immune response, however. If influenza subsides for several years, today’s toddlers could miss a chance to have an early-age response imprinted on their immune system. That could be good or bad, depending on what strains circulate during the rest of their life. For now, future flu transmission remains a roll of the dice.

Influenza Cases Worldwide, by Region
The World Health Organization tracks influenza transmission in 18 zones. Three of those regions appear here. Only people who get tested for influenzalike illnesses—typically about 5 percent of individuals who fall ill—are tallied.

I got the flu REALLY bad on our last road trip before COVID hit. CJ/GT and myself got wicked sick! I was a mess. Have not been sick since! The masks work FAMS!

Same! I got it in November 2019. It makes me wonder if it was actually COVID

So mask mandates permanently? Jail time for those who are outside in flu season without a mask?

Just asking questions.

I don't want to wear a mask any longer than I have to. I don't care if I get the flu.

This isn't really about wearing masks, this is about as something as simple as washing your hands more often but more importantly, if you're sick, stay the fuck home. I'm pretty sure most of us have drug our butts into work when we've not been feeling good but that really needs to stop.

My wife and I got horrible flu Christmas eve 2019 just before the covid outbreak in Jan 2020.....lasted a week each....I wondered if it was covid at that time....the flu disappeared because of social distancing, indoor job and school closures and mask wearing as well as hand washing and social distancing...the flu spreads primarily like wildfire through schools and places with large populations of workers like factories or malls, etc....it's that simple why the flu disappeared since covid safety measures were encouraged and the world shut down...as well as mass transit shutting basically down.

It's also going to be interesting to see what the MRSA infection rates are going to be during the pandemic.

Ive gotten flu shots for years because I was in airplanes a lot. Nothing worse than being in a plane with people coughing, hacking all around you.
I still periodically came down with something that was diagnosed as flu, te shots are only good for certain types?

Since Iv been a senior there are many more vaccines or shots I've had to get, pneumonia (2), whooping cough & shingles (3).
Now if you are a senior they have a more potent flue shot.

Anyone who thinks COVID got here in March is kidding themselves ... all those 'horrible cases of the flu' in late 2019 was COVID. The wife had it so bad she couldn't get up three stairs without being out of breath and this was just after getting back from nationals with the HS cheer team she coaches in early February. I was saying last summer that cold/flu season was going to be mild at the same time Fauci and other experts were warning about how bad the season was going to be. Seemed to me they either didn't understand logic or were using fear as a motivator.

So, I’m wondering if this is old news circulating among the QAnon nutcases or if my genius cousin came up with this all on his own. He thinks mask wearing is a ploy by the Libs to advance their anti-gender movement. His reasoning is that we will all soon not care or be able to tell if someone is a male or a female because masks make it hard to identify men/women.

And yes, pretty sure he voted for the former guy.
How, how, how did he find out? We worked so hard to keep it secret. What kind of evil genius is he?
