THE financial investment by Toulon Rugby Club president Mourad Boudjellal is paying dividends, as the team is leading the French championship after beating former leaders Perpignan 33-23 last weekend.

The group of foreign players, which includes New Zealanders Tana Umaga and Sonny Bill Williams, ex-Springbok Joe Van Niekerk, Australian Luke Rooney and English star Jonny Wilkinson, can no longer be called "mercenaries", French sporting newspaper L'Equipe claims.

"They are as proud to wear the lily of the valley [the club's symbol] as any youngster from La Rade [the harbour], and with these globe trotters caught by the red and black passion [the team's colours], the club is scared of no one," the newspaper said.
