Blazers big man Channing Frye wants to earn a new contract with the team, which partly explains why his deal wasn't extended prior to the season.

"We talked about it. We had mutual talks," Frye said.

"I want to give myself a whole year to do it. For me, I want to show them what I can be and show my worth to this team."

According to Frye and General Manager Kevin Pritchard, both parties agreed it was better to wait on business and focus on basketball instead.

"We had conversations but we felt it wasn't a fair deal for both sides. And that's okay," Pritchard explained.

"That's no problem. They want to prove how good he is and that's okay too."

Good mentality by the kid.

I've said it before about Frye, it will be hard to lose him one day if we will. He is just a nice guy and no matter what I'd be sad to see him go even for Lebron or someone. I feel the same way about Outlaw too. I love watching his interviews. Just very quiet and shy almost.

If we can sign him to a similar conreact we have Outlaw & Webster then we'd really be getting set on key reserve players.

You don't see Martell as a starter, then?

I like what Frye could bring to this team in the playoffs.

I envision him playing a role similar to what Antonio McDyess did for the Pistons during their title runs. Pick-and-pop all night for mid-range jumpers. Frye is a better shooter than McDyess, too.

I like it, but reading between the lines, I take it to mean the Blazers didn't offer as much as Frye hoped for, so he decided it would be better to forgo the safety of a guaranteed extension and prove himself for more money.
