December 16, 2017
Game #29, Home Game #16

Hornets Leaders:

Rebounds: Howard, 15
Assists: Walker, 6

Trail Blazers Leaders:

Rebounds: Collins, 10
Assists: Lillard, 11

NOTES:
  • Charlotte has attempted 784 free throws through 28 games compared to just 549 free throws attempted by Charlotte’s opponents. The +235 free throws attempted margin for Charlotte ranks 1st in the NBA. Tonight the Hornets had 28 free throw attempts compared to the Trail Blazers’ 18.
  • Nic Batum had 23 points on 9-17 shooting, including 5-9 from three-point range. Batum has averaged 17.8 points per game in his previous four contests against Portland, his highest scoring average against any team.
  • Batum’s 23 points are good for his highest points total this season (previous: 17 vs. MIN, 11/20) and his 5 three pointers are good for a season high as well (previous: 3 vs. MIN, 11/20).
  • Batum scored 18 points in the third quarter, matching the highest points total by a Hornets player in a single quarter this season.
  • With 9 points and 15 rebounds Dwight Howard has logged his 11th game with 15-or-more rebounds this season, third in the NBA. This is his third straight such game (12/13-12/16), his second longest streak this season (5, 10/18-10/27).
  • Through three quarters Portland’s bench had outscored Charlotte’s reserves 23-10, but the Hornets bench poured in 16 points in the fourth quarter, finishing the game with a 26- 25 advantage.
  • Damian Lillard’s 18 points and 11 assists are good for his fourth double-double this season.

STEPHEN SILAS – HORNETS ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH

On tonight’s game:
“Our guys fought, once again. I’m proud of them for fighting, we got in another deep hole, down 16 and we fought all the way back and had multiple opportunities down the stretch to either tie the game or take the lead. It was nice
to see Nic [Batum] back to kind of playing how Nic can play with the scoring as well as his play making. Kemba [Walker] obviously had a rough night, but he gutted it out. The plays that he had down the stretch, I wouldn’t want
the ball in anybody else’s hands. I’m also proud of Jeremy Lamb’s contribution that he gave because he hadn’t been playing well up until that point and then he really got us going with the side pick-and-roll play and he actually
played pretty well on defense as well. We’ve got to just keep fighting and know that if we play like how we played at the end of this game, fourth quarter, the end of the third, we’re going to win some games and we’re going to turn
around.”

On rotations:
“For now I’m going to shorten my rotations a little bit, because we need some wins. And it’s not time to develop or gift minutes right now it’s about winning and my rotations going to be short for a little while just until we get this thing
back on track.”

On Nic Batum:
“He played at a great pace. I think he went into the post some, which he hadn’t been doing quite as much lately. He had some matchups that he wanted to go at and he was aggressive in asking for the ball. I would have a play call
and then he would have a small on him and he and Kemba [Walker] would have eye contact and he’s get the ball and go to work, so I think his aggressiveness and his recognition that he had some post-up opportunities. But he’s
been out for a while, and hopefully this is the start of him having some rhythm in his game, because we’re going to need it.”

NIC BATUM – HORNETS GUARD

On frustration:
“We fought like for 48 minutes and once again we put ourselves in a bad situation where we were down like 15 or 16 again and we can’t do that. We try to do some work and we can’t as a team let that happen every time. When
you fight and you come in and we need to keep working and keep the score the same way. It’s happened the last couple games, especially the last two, where we were right there and we fought back and we’ve been good and
almost win the game like last game, but we can’t let that happen and put ourselves in bad situations every time. That was a close game, down 16, that’s the NBA sometimes you’re going to come back. That happens like 20% of
the time though not 80% of the time we can’t put ourselves in bad situations every time.

MARVIN WILLIAMS – HORNETS FORWARD

On Portland’s run from the 3rd into the 4
“It was making shots, man. It was making tough shots. We weren’t making shots. They have two guys that can really score the basketball over there, and obviously their guy, with their center, he can really play on the inside. We
didn’t shoot our best tonight obviously. We still had opportunities to make shots, get ahead, and then we didn’t make those. We ended up losing a close one.”

On the second night in a row rallying in the fourth quarter:
“We were able to get a few stops, which helped us get out in transition a little bit. We were able to make some shots on the other end to kind of cut into the deficit, but obviously we didn’t make enough, and so they were able to make
a couple plays down the stretch that really hurt us.”

On how much fight the team is showing right now:
“Man, it’s a tough stretch, man. You know, I think throughout the course of my career, I’ve been a part of situations like this, where things don’t go your way, and you’re losing more than you’d obviously like, but you know you build a
lot of character, man, and it kind of shows what you’re made of. If you continue to fight each and every day to work to get yourself out of it, or if, you know, you go the other way, I don’t think anybody in this locker room is going to
fold. We’re going to continue to fight each and every night to get better, to get out of this little rut that we’re in, and I do believe the guys feel like we’re going to turn it around. We just kind of have to get a couple of wins to get this
thing going in the right direction.

TERRY STOTTS – TRAIL BLAZERS HEAD COACH

On his team’s play in the fourth quarter:
“Well, that was fun! Getting three road wins in a row is pretty good. The last few minutes [of the game] were pretty exciting. I was proud that we were able to hold on. It’s the NBA, nothing is easy. You have to grind it out, it would be nice to have a 20 point win, but those are hard to come by.”

On defense against Dwight Howard.
“I thought Jusuf Nurkic and Ed Davis did a very good job of making it difficult for him to catch the ball and making him shoot over the top by not putting him in a position where he could just dunk the ball. Like any great player, you have to just make him work.”

EVAN TURNER – TRAIL BLAZERS GUARD

On Al-Farouq Aminu’s block of Kemba Walker’s layup attempt that would have given the Hornets the lead:
“That was big-time. That’s big-time on Chief [Al-Farouq Aminu], we needed that. Kemba [Walker] obviously the offensive rebound, tip-out, we scramble for it. I knew he was fast, I was just trying to run down and I saw Chief behind me and I was just hoping. He did the universal read of just me trying to be a diversion, get his attention, and then Chief blocked it and thankfully it worked and we took it the other way.”

On tonight’s win:
“We had a lot of good plays and stops and even though it wasn’t in a sexy way on the offensive end, in a sense, I think defensively we stuck in there and did the right things to make some plays.

AL-FAROUQ AMINU – TRAIL BLAZERS FORWARD

On his block of Kemba Walker’s layup attempt that would have given the Hornets the lead:
“Yeah, E.T. [Evan Turner] being the vet, he knows that when you see somebody that can block shots trailing behind you want to undercut him so that therefore basically they have to lob the ball up a little more and he did that and I was able to make the block. I give a lot of kudos to what E.T. did.”

On if it feels good to win three straight road games:
“For sure. It’s always hard to get a win on the road and we did that and we’re going to keep on battling and try to finish out the road trip for sure.”

On his team’s play in the fourth quarter:
“Well, that was fun! Getting three road wins in a row is pretty good. The last few minutes [of the game] were pretty exciting. I was proud that we were able to hold on.

There you have it folks ! our good ol' coach was proud of our play in the 4th, a nice little fun and exciting game !
