NBA: NEW YORK (2-4) at LA CLIPPERS (4-2)

Marbury's status uncertain as Knicks face Clippers

New York (2-4) at LA Clippers (4-2) 10:30 pm EST

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Stephon Marbury's absence could not comeat a worse time for the New York Knicks.

With their veteran point guard's status in limbo, theshorthanded Knicks will take on the Los Angeles Clippers in thesecond contest of a tough four-game West Coast road tripWednesday at Staples Center.

Marbury skipped New York's morning practice on Monday afterreportedly being informed that he would not start in the team'seventual, 113-102, loss against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.

He flew home to New York prior to the contest but has yet to besuspended - claiming that he had permission to leave the team.Coach Isiah Thomas would not comment, opting to keep the issue"in-house."

But the timing was poor by Marbury, who left his teammatesbehind just in time for the matchup with the high-powered Sunsand two-time MVP Steve Nash - one of the league's top floorgenerals.

Second-year player Mardy Collins started in his place but didnot last long. The 6-6 Collins - known more for his defensiveprowess - dished out two assists and missed his lone shot beforespraining his right foot in the first quarter on Tuesday night.

It was another blow to an already ravaged New York squad, whichalso was without starters Zach Randolph (death in the family)and Quentin Richardson (elbow). The Knicks have lost three in arow since winning two of three to start the season.

Ironically, Thomas and Marbury - who have been each other'sstaunchest supporters - may have an irrevocably brokenrelationship. Thomas and owner James Dolan have reportedlyspoken about buying out the rest of Marbury's contract.

But with or without the 30-year-old Marbury, it will be a toughtest against the Clippers, who won their first four games tostart the season before dropping their last two.

Los Angeles suffered a 103-95 setback against the ClevelandCavaliers on Sunday. Sam Cassell scored 28 points to pace theClippers.

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The New York Knicks hope there is timeto repair the relationship between Stephon Marbury and coachIsiah Thomas. But on Wednesday, it was too late to salvage thegame.

Tim Thomas and Cuttino Mobley hit a pair of clutch jumpers tothwart a frantic run by the Knicks as the Los Angeles Clippersheld on for an 84-81 victory at Staples Center.

Chris Kaman had 14 points and 18 rebounds for the Clippers, whoused a decisive 23-3 run in the third quarter to take control ofthe game - allowing them to withstand New York's spurt in thefinal 12 minutes.

The Knicks had one final chance, but after Mobley's free throwmade it 84-81 with six seconds left, Jamal Crawford'sdesperation 3-pointer hit the back iron as time expired.

But most of the story revolved around the Knicks' enigmaticpoint guard.

Marbury skipped New York's morning practice on Monday afterreportedly being informed that he would not start in the team'seventual 113-102 loss against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday.

He flew home to New York in a huff prior to that contest but wasnot suspended - claiming that he had permission to leave theteam. Thomas would not comment, opting to keep the issue"in-house."

What was made public was a fine of nearly $200,000 levied onMarbury, who rejoined the team in Los Angeles and was seenshaking hands with Thomas prior to the game as they sat next toeach other on the bench.

That was where the 30-year-old guard remained at the start ofthe contest. Marbury was not even the first guard off the benchfor Thomas, who sent in Nate Robinson as the initial reserve.

Marbury eventually threw off his warm-ups with 2:54 left in theopening period and scored his first basket with 11:39 left inthe second. He scored 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting in 33minutes.

It was Marbury's seventh career appearance as a reserve in 805games. His last time off the bench came on April 6, 2002, as amember of the Suns.

The Knicks also got starters Zach Randolph and QuentinRichardson back but still looked sluggish, especially in thethird.

Despite gaining firepower, New York put forth an anemic effortoffensively, getting outscored by 20 points over the final nineminutes of the third as the Clippers took a 63-53 lead into thefinal period.

The Knicks, who scored just nine points in the third, missed 17straight field-goal attempts during that span - finally breakingthat drought on Crawford's jumper to cut their deficit to 63-55just 58 seconds into the fourth.

In the final 12 minutes, the Clippers held off the Knicks, whotied the game at 77-77 on two free throws by center Eddy Currywith 1:41 left, capping a 20-4 run. Thomas and Mobley thenadded back-to-back jumpers to end the burst.

Curry and Randolph scored 16 points apiece for the Knicks, whohave lost four in a row since starting the campaign 2-1.

Thomas was not concerned about Crawford's miss on the finalpossession.

"We have four or five guys out on the floor that, at the end ofa game, that can make a play," the coach said. "I'm notuncomfortable with him (Crawford) taking that shot. We have guysthat can make plays and still handle the situation out there."

The coach did comment that he thinks that Marbury can still helpthe team.

"My goal is trying to win a basketball game," Thomas said."I've played with people I don't like, and I've won with peopleI don't like. We're a professional basketball team and my jobis trying to win a basketball game.

"However, I feel we are trying to win a basketball game.Whatever happened in the past is in the past. We move forward."
