NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

Boston's "Big Three" face tough test against New Jersey

Boston (4-0) at New Jersey (4-1) 7:30 pm EST

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Kevin Garnett, Ray Allenand Paul Pierce have Boston Celtics fans reminiscing about thegood old days.

The new "Big Three" will look to help the Celtics to their fifthstraight win when they host the Atlantic Division rival NewJersey Nets on Saturday.

On Friday, Allen was in foul trouble but it mattered little asGarnett shot 12-of-16 and scored 27 points and grabbed 19rebounds to notch his fourth double-double in a 106-83 win overAtlanta.

Pierce added 23 points for the Celtics, who are off to their beststart since winning six straight to open the 1987-88 season. Those were the prime years of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and RobertParrish.

Behind Garnett, Allen and Pierce, Boston is shooting aleague-leading 54.2 percent from the floor.

But New Jersey figures to be the toughest test for the revampedCeltics' squad. The Nets boast their own trio of superstars inRichard Jefferson, Jason Kidd and Vince Carter.

Jefferson is off to a great start, averaging 25.6 points and 5.8rebounds while Kidd has been a threat to record a triple-doubleevery night. The 13-year veteran is averaging 8.0 points, 10.2assists, and 8.4 rebounds.

New Jersey, which is off to its best start in five seasons, got 25points and a pair of game-clinching free throws from Jeffersonwith 24 seconds left to post a 87-85 win over Washington onThursday.

The Nets have won five of the last seven meetings, but havedropped two straight here.

BEAT THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

You guys will get your first test tonight versus a real team. lol

GO CELTICS!!!

Re: NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

I was going to come in here and support the Celtics but then CK has to go and a make a little stab at my Raptors, so here's what I hope happens.

VC has some minor injury that takes him out of the game in the opening minutes but is able to play the next day. Now I can at utter the phrase, "go nets" while trying to hold the puke down in my throat. Then I hope Krtic, the Big Kitten and what the heck, I've got nothing against the old bastard, Kidd, go off on the Celtics. Hopefully it's a really exhausting game for both teams and it takes days for them to recover.

Nets, 109-107 OT.

Re: NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

haha, Shookem, sorry.

I'll support them next time.

Re: NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

This will be the first time I really get to see the Celtics (other then highlights), so I'm looking forward to that. And hopefully it'll be the first time everyone gets to see them lose this season.

Re: NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

With Veal and Posey out, we'll definitely lose this game.

Re: NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

Sorry NJ fans, I'm going with the Celtics this time around, but on the plus side, you can have the distinction of being the only team to beat them at this point. I feel Kidd will step up with his game being that this is a division rival, but I can't see you guys winning this game. Boston seems like they have this new found commitment for a championship. In other words, they won't let Jersey win.

Re: NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

Really want the nets to win, but after the wizards game, I'm kinda just looking for a game that doesn't make me wanna gauge my eyes out. Hope we win tho

The Nets have been forever chasing that frontcourt player, sure. However reluctance to trade for that big ticket player means the New Jersey brass is committed to a team built around their wing players. While each team has a trio of star players, one cannot help but feel that today will be a battle of team-building ideologies. Boston is playing out of their minds right now, and the unit has avoided the season-beginning chemistry issues that the Nets have made routine. New Jersey will need everyone to step up and play up to their potential in this one. Oh and by everyone, I mean Vince Carter’s jumpshots.

[*]Avoid careless play - The Nets are playing horrible basketball right now. Luckily they’ve also shown signs of greatness, and have been able to battle back against weak teams to make up for their mistakes. That one loss tells the story here, however. The Nets will not be able to recuperate from their routine first-quarter turnover fest and must come out of the gates with focus and execute.
[*]Offensive consistency-Vince has been able to be effective even though this shot isn’t going by driving to the line; not all of our players have the luxury of a second offensive style of play. Krstic, Magloire, and Boki will hopefully continue to improve and get the rust off that’s been effecting them so far.
[*]Get bench production - Familiar face Eddie House has been a great shooter off the bench (when has he not?). If the Nets’ zone defense manages to slow down their starters, expect the under-appreciated Boston bench to be the x-factor in this game.
[*]Avoid foul trouble- The Nets have been making the opponents pay from the charity stripe. If Boston gets into foul trouble they’ll have to rely on their bench, and will give NJ a shot at beating them if the Nets’ motion offense starts slow.
On paper these are evenly matched teams. Each one is built around a fantastic trio whose players compliment their strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately New Jersey has not been playing like that team on paper. Sloppy basketball, and poor offensive execution has plagued this team thus far. I’m not really sure we can count on a home-court advantage, either. If this game is played in the spring, I’d say the Nets are the easy favorites. But this game isn’t played during the last month of the season, nor are the Nets playing up to par right now. New Jersey wins a close game or loses in a blow out.

Make a new thread, Jigga. It'll be much easier, without sportsticker.

Re: NBA: BOSTON (4-0) at NEW JERSEY (4-1)

I wanna try using a single thread. After careful analysis of the sportsticker posting frequency (as in, Denny sat down and ran the numbers and I'm just taking his credit :-D) it really won't get in the way. I mean, look at the posting in this thread so far.

Celtics-Nets Preview

In the early days of the 2007-08 season, the Boston Celtics and New Jersey Nets appear to be the class of the Atlantic Division. On Saturday night at the Meadowlands, they face each other for the first time.

The Celtics (4-0) are off to their best start since 1987-88, when Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish led Boston to a 6-0 start en route to a 52-win season and an appearance in the Eastern Conference finals.

The current team's new "Big Three" of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen looks like it could be poised for a similar run. The Celtics, who managed only a 24-58 record a season ago, have won three of their first four games by 20 points or more, including Friday night's 106-83 home rout of Atlanta.

The 1987-88 club didn't win any of its first four games by more than 17 points.

"When you coach or play in Boston, every day is something with history,'' said Celtics coach Doc Rivers, whose club is the NBA's lone remaining unbeaten. "This team is so history-rich. We've just got to get better."

A Boston team playing better than it has already would be a frightening prospect for the rest of the league. The Celtics are shooting a league-best 54.2 percent from the field this season, including two straight performances of 61 percent or better. Defensively, they are allowing just 88.5 points per game and 39.8 percent shooting.

"The offense is the obvious, but you all don't know how hard we work on our defense," Garnett said, "talking to each other and being one when we're out there. We know we're not flawless."

Garnett has been excellent in his first four games as a Celtic. The veteran power forward, acquired in an offseason trade with Minnesota, has exceeded 20 points and 10 rebounds in each contest. On Friday night, he scored 27 points, shot 12-for-16 from the field and hauled in 19 boards.

Pierce added 23 points, giving him a 22.5 average through four games. Allen was relatively quiet with a season-low 14 points, but shot 6-for-9 to improve his field-goal percentage to .638. He is 13-for-25 from 3-point range this season.

New Jersey (4-1) appears to be the toughest opponent the Celtics have faced. While the Celtics are blowing the opposition away, though, the Nets are using tight defense to gut out wins in close games.

They have held all three opponents to 88 points or fewer during their current winning streak, which continued with a 87-85 home victory over Washington on Thursday night.

The Nets rallied from a 20-point first-half deficit, then squandered a six-point lead in the final two minutes before Richard Jefferson hit a pair of free throws to win it with 24 seconds remaining. Jefferson got fouled after rebounding Vince Carter's missed 3-point attempt.

"Your eyes get real big sometimes when it's a tied game and someone takes a shot,'' said Jefferson, who led New Jersey with 25 points and is averaging a team-best 25.6 through the season's first five games. "A lot of times people turn around and look at the ball. No one boxed me out and I had a free run at it and the ball bounced perfectly to me."

New Jersey has won five of its last seven games against Boston, but the Celtics have won their last two visits to the Meadowlands.

Yeah, all the mods who make game threads are trying something new.

If it works, we'll keep on doing it. If it doesn't work out, we'll just go back to the separate Sportsticker/Game thread.

So please, after this game is all said and done, and after trying it out, feel free to let us know your opinion on using game threads in Sportsticker threads.
