Nuggets return to scene of December brawl

Denver (2-1) at New York (1-1) 7:30 pm EST

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- When the Denver Nuggets last visited MadisonSquare Garden, the repercussions were felt throughout the NBA.

The Nuggets begin a four-game road trip through the EasternConference when they meet the New York Knicks on Tuesday.

On December 16, 2006, in the final minutes of a 123-100 blowoutwin over New York, Denver coach George Karl elected to keep fourstarters in the game with just over a minute remaining. Duringa break, Knicks coach Isiah Thomas warned Nuggets star forwardCarmelo Anthony that Denver should be wary of driving to thebasket.

Shortly thereafter, then-New York forward Mardy Collins tookex-Denver guard J.R. Smith down by the neck on a drive into thelane, leading to a confrontation between the two. Knicks guardNate Robinson jumped in to pull Smith away but was pushed awayby Anthony, and Robinson and Smith then tumbled into the frontrow of seats while fighting.

As the fireworks looks to be subsiding, Anthony landed a punchthat on Collins that escalated the emotions. All in all, tenplayers were ejected and seven were suspended, including Anthonyfor 15 games.

Less than three days after the incident, the Nuggets traded forPhiladelphia guard Allen Iverson to make up for some of thescoring that was lost when Anthony was suspended. In the 48regular-season games since Denver were able to pair up Anthonyand Iverson for the first time on January 22, the Nuggets are27-21.

The Knicks will be looking to win two of three games to open theseason for the first time since the 2000-01 season - the lastcampaign they were able to manage a winning record.

NEW YORK (Ticker) -- There was plenty of action Tuesday nightat Madison Square Garden. But this time it was for the rightreasons.

Eddy Curry scored nine of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, including a crucial three-point play, and added eight reboundsas the New York Knicks held off the Denver Nuggets, 119-112, inhigh-scoring shootout.

Zach Randolph collected 22 points and 17 rebounds and JamalCrawford added 23 and eight assists for the Knicks, whooutscored the Nuggets by 15 points in the final quarter tosecure the victory.

Denver's fourth game of the season and New York's third markedthe first time the teams met since December 16, 2006 when aroutine blowout turned into full-scale melee. But in this one,all the action was on the court.

After Crawford's runner gave the Knicks a three-point lead,Curry bulled his way to the basket, overpowering three Nuggets'defenders - powering in a layup while getting fouled - to makeit 115-110 with 55 seconds left.

Although Curry missed the ensuing free throw, New York would notallow Denver any closer than four points the rest of the way -icing the game when Carmelo Anthony missed two free throws witha chance to make it a one possession game with 12.4 secondsleft.

But looming over this exciting contest was last season's fight.

With 1:15 remaining in that game, the Knicks took exception tothe Nuggets having four starters in the game as coach IsiahThomas warned Anthony that the his team should not drive to thebasket.

On their next possession, that is exactly what they did as J.R.Smith was met with a hard foul by reserve guard Mardy Collins.Diminutive Knicks guard Nate Robinson intervened with Smith asthe action spilled into the stands while Anthony punchedCollins.

The incident resulted in a 15-game suspension for Anthony andeven less time to get acclimated with Iverson, who was acquiredfrom the Philadelphia 76ers less than a week later.

Everyone involved with the incident downplayed the events onTuesday and opted to focus on this game - at least the offensiveaspect of it. The Nuggets scored 37 points in the firstquarter, built a 15-point lead less than five minutes into thesecond and took a 66-60 edge into the break.

The Nuggets led by double digits for most of the first fiveminutes of the third, taking an 81-71 edge on Iverson's19-footer. But on consecutive possessions, the Knicks got a3-pointer from Crawford and a dunk by Renaldo Balkman to cut thedeficit in half with 5:44 left.

Denver went nearly five minutes without a basket, and New Yorkused an 11-1 run to tie the game at 82-82 on Crawford's hoopwith 4:15 remaining. The Nuggets finally broke their droughtwith 92 seconds left on a basket by Anthony and took a 92-82lead into the fourth.

Denver's third double-digit lead of the game evaporated quicklyas New York scored the first seven points of the fourth. TheKnicks were within 92-89 with 10:41 left and twice got withinone point before Nene's transition dunk with 7:36 held off NewYork temporarily.

But Curry and Randolph, who combined to shoot 20-of-31 from thefield, were too much for the Nuggets down the stretch.

Iverson scored 32 points and Anthony added 24 and nine assistsfor Denver.
