Glenn Beck and fans to rally on 'I Have a Dream' anniversary
The political talk show host and fans will gather at the Lincoln Memorial, the site where Martin Luther King Jr. made his famous speech. Sarah Palin will headline. Civil rights leaders are not happy.

Civil rights leaders aligned with Democrats are recoiling at the Fox News pundit's plan to gather his faithful on the same steps where King delivered his call for racial justice. They're planning their own march in honor of the speech and criticizing Beck, saying he's trying to hijack King's legacy.

The debate is just one in a handful surrounding the event, which, despite its billing as an apolitical show of support for military families, has not dodged the trappings of partisan politics. Like the man behind it, the event seems to raise ire while preaching unity.

In the months leading up to the "Restoring Honor" rally and related events, Beck has accused the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts of religious discrimination. He has suggested the federal government has tried to limit such protests on the mall, without citing evidence.

Boy, it sure would be nice if the guy who smeared dog feces on Tawana Brawley would judge a man by the content of his character rather than the color of his skin.

Glen Beck is batshit crazy and one of the most annoying people on TV.

It shows a lack of class to steal the spotlight on the 'I Have a Dream' anniversary. He should have moved the location or day of the event.

Its funny because its kind of the same argument as the ground zero mosque. "lack of class" or "consideration". "move the location". etc etcetc.

wonder what Barry Soltero thinks.

“as a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country.”

“This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable. The principle that people of all faiths are welcome in this country, and will not be treated differently by their government, is essential to who we are.”

How about if terrorists hold a parody of Independence Day? On the 4th of July, at the Liberty Bell, they can make pro-terrorism speeches.

So you disagree with these comments?

no, as long as they don't blow our shit up. I don't like the mosque. they can build it if they want they just can't say shit as I flip it off every time I walk by.

I agree. It seems like a very cheap publicity stunt.

It'll be a profitable publicity stunt too (at least, for Beck). And probably have a decent turn out, and be shown to be a true "movement" (instead of the publicity stunt that it really is).

so, is anyone that's against this ACTUALLY LISTENING to what Beck's trying to do? How can a peaceful gathering of Americans to "restore honor", keynoted by (among others like Beck and Palin) Dr. King Jr's niece and a Navy Cross winner (sole survivor of four of his SEAL team that were overrun by 100-200 Afghans, after being betrayed by goatherders they let go) be in the same realm as a "Ground Zero Mosque"---which is one of the more ridiculous controversies I remember.

Here's his book: http://www.amazon.com/Lone-Survivor...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1282798219&sr=8-1

So you're saying they were holding innocent goat herders captive by force in their own country, then let them go?

And the goat herders reported them to the local authorities?

And 4 Seals killed a couple hundred other Afghan citizens in their own country but only lost 3 of the four Seals?

And now Glen Beck is paying them tribute by holding a "restore honor" propaganda party on a site with no connection to any of this that he purposefully selected to inflame racist hatred?

I agree it's pretty ridiculous, and disgusting that Beck is using dead veterans for his own ends.

Yes, I'm saying that (if you believe the reports of the survivor, which I'm not sure you do) the goatherders came upon them in the conduct of a mission. It was decided not to kill them quickly and quietly, so they were released. Whereupon they went to the local warlord (I'm relatively certain you're the first person I've ever heard who's said that a Taliban junior-commander and 200 armed enemies of the state of Afghanistan were "local authorities", but ok). The "authorities" then attacked the SEAL team (non-proportional use of deadly force is unauthorized if they actually WERE authorities, as I believe you were saying in the clip where the cop hit the jaywalking resister), and the SEALs in self-defense stopped a couple hundred of the mob from killing them for awhile. The commander was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for some pretty extraordinary efforts in getting his guys some help.

Why is the Capitol Mall area off-limits to Beck? He applied for a permit, and received one. Just like many other Americans invoking their right to peacefully assemble. Yes, he is paying them tribute, which is something I don't see a lot of other Americans in the media doing right now. I, for one, appreciate that. I wish I wasn't overseas right now, or I would consider going.

Racist hatred is inflamed by those with racist agendas. I'm looking at Sharpton.

Beck's not "using" anyone, much less dead veterans. It seems as if he's done a pretty good job of organizing an event where people who actually believe in something other than themselves can have a voice--one that's generally not heard or appreciated from my vantage point.

Beck's main purpose at the event is to have tables set up where people will sell his ghostwritten book.

Yup, profit is the whole purpose of the event.

I'd feel the same way if Shaprton gave a speech at Gettysburg on the anniversary of Lincoln's famous speech.

If possible, could you explain why?

And everybody be honest...we're among a subset of people that I think are more knowledgeable about current events and history than the random populace...did anyone (until prompted) say "8/28...holy cow, that's the day of the MLK Jr. speech?!?!" Would anyone know the date of the Emancipation Proclamation?

I'm laughing a bit on the inside at Sharpton's saying that Dr. King (the niece) is "expected to push...for the exact antithesis of Dr. King's legacy and the Civil Rights Movement". Seriously, this guy just needs to shut up and go away until he grows up.

Let's assume that Sharpton wasn't holding a huge march to commemorate the famous speech, but pushing his new book or rallying around a new political underground movement.

It would just be selfish and show a lack of class to hold the gathering at Gettysburg on the date of the Gettysburg address. I know it's a crappy analogy because although the speech is famous, Gettysburg isn't as popular as the Lincoln Memorial but I can't think of a good analogy.

It's not the time or place to hold that rally.

Are you laughing because MLK's niece is very anti-gay rights and even lies about Coretta Scott King's stance on gay rights? This most likely is to what Sharpton is referring.

Nazis have the right to march in Skokie if they have a permit, so why shouldn't Beck be allowed to do his thing since he has a permit?

No matter what Beck actually does on that day in D.C., he's proving the hypocrisy is rather stunning. Those who argue for the mosque near the WTC grounds are arguing against Beck's right, which is similarly based. Those except for me, that is.

I didn't know the day. my only issue with Beckenstein is that he's just feeding on the insecurities, fears, hatred and anger of people.

Oh, btw, buy gold.

Have your speeches, but don't try to spin it was the way the rest of the country feels.

He should move the rally two blocks from the Lincoln Memorial
