Funny thing is China has 4x our population and spends about 1/4 what we do on government. And they're supposed to be the left-wing communist/socialist vision in action. The lesser govt. spending seems to be great for their economy, which has grown about 8x since 1998 (15 years).

amazing what happens when your country adds Macao and Hong Kong back into the fold, and lets them stay capitalistic. ;)

Well, yeah. When you look at a graph of China's GDP, it took off when they took over Hong Kong.

North Korea's doing this as well. They're setting up "Special Economic Zones" in Rason, Kaesong and Kunmangsong where a lot of the rules don't apply, so that they can do things like use S.Korean and Russian and Chinese investment and workers, trade fairs, etc. with capitalistic principles while maintaining an overall socialistic dictatorship gov't.

The fact that Obama and the dems have turned into terrible liars is not lost on anyone. The right might be clueless, but the left just flat out lies.

We need a new system or new politicians entirely.

This generation of GOP leaders is pathetic. Obama has used his half-blackness to blunt any criticism of his policies. The GOP is so cowed by the accusation of racism that they won't call him out for what he is. Newt Gingrich had his flaws when he was Speaker, but clarity of thought wasn't one of them.

Paul Ryan has the ideas right, but lacks the charisma. Cantor is an opportunistic whore. I don't think McCarthy is any better. Boehner I think sincerely wants what's best for the country and can't bring himself to massively lose a political battle to win the larger war. Letting the country go over the fiscal cliff and experiencing a recession to improve the finances of the country (which higher taxes and lower expenditures would do) would be best for the long-term interest of the country but would cause massive economic pain. The Democrats play the long game--they don't care about the circumstances of people who don't vote for them; they just want to increase dependency. The Republicans can't look over the next hill.

Frankly, I think this country needs to discover the real cost of Big Government to decide whether or not they want it. Right now, they're getting Big Government at Small Government prices. Who wouldn't want that deal? I say if we want Big Government, it's not unreasonable for us to pay for it.

As public enemy said "fuck da police!" This police stating country is gonna fail. And when the dust settles; remember we told you so.

I like Chris Christie. He might have a shot.

No need. It's patently obvious.

Ah, so you mean it's true because you say so. Duh.

The criticisms of his policies aren't being blunted by some nefarious race-based media gag order orchestrated from the Oval Office. The criticisms of his policies, whether they're valid or not, are being bickered over by the useless news media who cannot make a valid point to save their lives. Race is hardly ever brought up anyway, and none of the valid criticisms of Obama have anything to do with it. I just don't see your point.

one of the best quotes

when Nancy Pelosi can claim unemployment benefits create jobs and isn’t laughed out of Congress it’s clear that lessons in reality are sorely needed

and this takes the cake for dumb

Lamonte David Lowe @montyinthebk Just opened up my paycheck, they said that the payroll taxes were going to be hit...FUCKING REPUBLICANS!!!! @Polo_Nolo @lowe_nolan

China's "economy" is a whole different thing than America's economy. I'll go with standard of living over the meaningless label of economy.

The day Denny Crane says he'd rather give back all his toys, cars, pc and phone, live in a shack, shit in a bucket, and eat rice and dog scraps or nothing at all while earning $22 a month for his hard labor then maybe his posts will have a shred of credibility.

Gotta rep this.

It works the other way, though, as well. If you have indoor plumbing and drinking water that doesn't kill 1 of every 5 children, don't have to root through garbage for food, and don't have to be indentured for life making 22 bucks a day in order to send something back home to your family, (among other things) then you have to take a look at what "poverty line" is.

I'll be honest and never looked at what the poverty line actually buys. Have you?

many times. ~1/4 of my subordinates in my unit made below poverty line.

Where were they 30 years ago and where are they today?

A small fraction of the people there earn $22 a month.

Do they pay rent and for food?

You probably should include base housing and mess hall food as income...

they're reservists. they don't get base housing. They get $8 worth of mess hall food a weekend.

Edit after seeing DLJ: they get uniforms issued one time (at boot camp or other accession). They don't get new clothes every year.

So they have full time jobs and do this a weekend a month and 2 weeks a year type of thing?

the ones with full time jobs were doing ok. It was the ones who could only get part-time work, or seasonal. One was a single mom/2 kids trying to do school as well as work. But yeah, the weekend-a-month/2wks a year thing. When they get deployed, some make more than they make here (b/c they don't have to pay rent/food), but some get paid much less (b/c military pay scales for, say, an E-5 welder/plumber are much much less than a plumber/welder w/12 years experience can charge/make).

Then again, it was Spokane, so maybe that's a deflated market compared to everywhere else, I don't know. But I had to do financial counseling with almost 1/4 of the unit.

Ahh I got ya Brian..I did not even think about reserve units, I am ashamed to say..There were not many "active" reserve units when I was in..These guys really sacrafice to serve..full time guys, well thats the job..the armed forces believes that they save money deploying reservists rather than keeping operational units on the books..just a shell game..

Wow, that's wild.

Maybe they ought to enlist full-time?
