I leave on thursday for 5 days in DC for a wedding. I have most nights accounted for with dinners and friends and such, but during the day I should have some time to explore. Of course I want to go to several of the museums and I'll be staying on the mall, so it should be fun to walk around.

Any suggestions?

1. Fuck Bitches.
2. Get Money.

(I haven't been to DC for a long time, there's a Legal Seafoods though, love that chain).

For the briefest of trips, drop by Mags's house.

stand outside the white house like:

I highly suggest going to the Washington national cathedral. If you enjoy architecture you will love the brilliance of the century old structure. If you go to the top there are viewing windows with an astounding view of Georgetown. If you like history then you will enjoy visiting the gravesite of former president Woodrow Wilson located in the Cathedral.

Another thing I enjoyed on my trip to DC was going to the park located near Ronald Reagan international. It is located along the beautiful Potomac river. You will get an incredible sense for the size of planes as they fly over top of you so close that you feel you can jump up and touch them. There is a fair amount of grassy area, so you could throw a frisbee or just sit and chill. I'll look for the exact name of the park!

If you are staying near the mall then you will be at museum central. From what I recall the Washington Museum of the American Indian has the most diverse cafeteria food selection out of all of the institutes around there, so if you are museum hopping, and plan on visiting that museum, then you might want to plan your lunch break there!

The cathedral would require a taxi ride, but if you don't feel like doing that I would highly suggest going to the botanical garden which is near the mall. They have the most diverse assortment of plants that I have ever seen. In one room you will feel like you are in a tropical jungle, and the next you will feel like you are in a desert.

I assume this was already on your list, but you've got to make the walk down the reflecting pool to the Lincoln memorial. The sheer size of monument is astounding, and no matter how many pictures of it you see, you cannot understand its beauty unless you have seen it in person! You should take a walk to the Washington monument on this same trip. Be prepared for an average amount of walking, but it's worth it!

Edit: The name of the park is "Gravelly point park".

Great ideas, thanks and repped. It's so weird, but everyone says the same thing about the native cafeteria, it's always listed as a top place to go. Seems strange for a cafeteria to become a destination, but by all accounts it has.

The gardens you mentioned is a great idea I hadn't considered. I'll be adding that to my list. Gravelly point park was already on my list, but I just got all excited again just thinking about it.

Thanks

Haven't been to DC in ages, was also going to recommend Smithsonian. Whatever your interest you could easily spend a day or more there.

Last time I went was for the big women's rights march. Don't think there are any big political protests scheduled for that weekend but I could be wrong. The 30 million who were supposed to show up to impeach Obama did not materialize.

That's why I'm going, to get us 1 closer to 30 million. I just need an "Obummer" teeshirt.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited but turned down the option of getting invited to some inside the beltway political shindig that's supposed to have Senators and Congresspeople. I'd rather spend my time with friends and family and leave that highfalutin life to others.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a must see, as is the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

I'll be spending one evening, going out to dinner on with a relative whose currently in the military, perhaps he would be interested in going with me. Good suggestion, I'll bring it up. Otherwise, perhaps I'll go it alone.

There are several Smithsonians. The Air and Space one is a must see. I think others are: Jefferson Memorial, FDR Memorial (out of the way, but very interesting), MLK Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, and the National Archives, where you get to see the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Also, the Holocaust Museum is incredibly moving.

Stop by the CIA campus, take the elevator to the top floor, and say hi to Denny and Sly.
