(CNN) -- Texas Rep. Ron Paul won a California straw poll, the state Republican Party announced in a statement Saturday night.

A total of 833 ballots were cast during the straw poll, the statement said.

Paul won with 44.9% of the votes, Texas Gov. Rick Perry came in second with 29.3% of the votes, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came in third with 8.8% of the votes.

On a personal level, I'd rather Ron Paul run for the President then any of the other Republican/conservative candidates. Because even though I don't agree with some of what he says, at least he says what he believes and doesn't alter his stances based on the audiences he is in front of.

I'd enjoy his candor...and his "old crazy man" body language.

as usual, the best man for the job has zero chance of winning it

Ron Paul is on the crazy pills. Can't wait to see his 9/11 craziness on display. Of course, this straw poll means nothing, and you have Obama Hack julius hoping Barry runs against Paul. Um, duh...

actually, if I was a "obama hack", I'd probably be happy with his performance and not complain about how much of a spineless wimp he is. That and I'd actually want some crazy person like Bachman or Palin to run against him.

My personal favorite is Huntsman and Romney, but I respect how Ron Paul actually sticks to what he believes instead of cow-towing to the audience. Thanks for playing though.

I agree that Paul is very consistent in his beliefs. But he also reminds me of that crazy uncle that the kids talk about putting in a special home somewhere.

Well, that's the thing. It's a lot easier to be consistent in your beliefs when you are mad as a hatter. That way you don't have to be bothered by any shades of grey that the real world might present.

What if you're the mad one? :)
