People still buy and read video game magazines. I don't but some people do. And it's those people that read Game Informer that were treated to some (minor) leaked details about Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) nanoseconds before the internet could copy-paste the information and disseminate it for free. The follow up to Rockstar North's GTA IV, which sold 22-million copies (making it one of the top selling video games ever, despite the promotion you hear about Halo and COD), it set to be released this spring.
- will have a 58 square mile living breathing map, presumably without load screens except for indoor-outdoor transitions, making it substantially larger than GTA IV. For the sake of comparison, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim features a massive and highly-detailed playable map that is roughly 44 square miles smaller than GTA V's proposed size. No word yet on how much of the GTA V map will actually be detailed and full of things to do rather than water or largely featureless terrain as there was in GTA: San Andreas. It will feature a detailed ocean floor (wtf?) and a military installation.
- will have three playable characters, each with unique personalities and styles of play. Dunno how this will work. Presumably they weave in and out of the main story line, working together but not always. Supposedly you can switch to who you want to play with at your leisure but when you're not using a character he'll be living some kind of Sims's type AI-controlled life as the game continues. The protagonists are yet unnamed but are featured in the above graphic.
- as usual there will be a plethora of side quests and random encounters. GTA V will take a page from Red Dead Redemption and include randomized quests that will continuously generate during the game. TBH I got irritated by the random quests in RDD because there were only a few types that just repeated all the time. Hopefully GTA V will be more varied. Expect celebrity cameos in the game especially if Lazlow is involved.
- dating has reportedly been removed from the game but friendships will remain, presumably with date-like activities (bowling, drinking, etc.) and relationship status. Hopefully they won't reintroduce the game mechanic that had your grandmother calling you every eighteen minutes to take her grocery shopping, or lose her love forever, unless they are seeking to irritate the gamers again.
- the trailer features jets which would fit nicely with a giant game map.
