Grantland Ranks Team Logos.......

That's awesome! According to that list our logo would be the 2nd seed in the Western Conference Logo Playoffs!

My ranking:

#1 - POR (duh!)...although I prefer the old-style. But huge win for being original and getting away with an abstract design. Simply perfect.

#2 - BOS - Typically I'd hate this, but legacy and tradition count in sports.

#3 - PHI
76ers.png

#4 - GSW

#5 - LAL - I hate ranking them this high, but much like BOS legacy and continuity count. It's a classic.
lakers.png

#6 - ATL
hawks.png

#7 - MIL
bucks.png

#8 - IND
pacers.png

#9 - CHI - Always found it quite boring, but glad they haven't attempted a redesign. I might actually rank it below NYK but will leave it here.

#10 - SAN

#11 - NYK

#12 - PHX

#13 - TOR

#14 - MEM
grizzlies.png

#15 - CHA - They did a good job with the redesign, but it was made for today...I can't help but think that it won't age well.
hornets.png

#16 - WAS - Generic, but not offensive.
wizards.png

#17 - DET - See: WAS.
logos_51.png

#18 - MIA - I tend to appreciate simplicity, but this design is so overrated.
heat.png

#19 - DEN - This marks the beginning of godawful 90s redesign.
logos_63.png

#20 - HOU - Better than their 90s redesign, and I probably ranked it lower than I should have. Still hate it.
rockets.png

#21 - SAC - Maybe this should swap places with DEN, but the pointyness is jarring.
kings.png

#22 - ORL
magic.png

#23 - DAL
mavs.png

#24 - BKN - Another non-90s redesign that should probably be lumped in with LAC/OKC, but its simplicity makes it better than everything below it. It's actually better than some above it, but when you consider this was the branding for a "new" NBA team in BKLYN (!) it's a huge fail.
nets.png

#25 - UTH
jazz.png

#26 - NOP
pelicans.png

#27 - CLE - They've always suffered from terrible color selection. The design sucks, but the use of color makes it worse than it should be.
cavs.png

#28 - MIN - This is the gold-standard for terrible 90s design. Simply awful.
timberwolves.png

#29 - OKC - Fail.
thunder.png

#30 - LAC - The Clips out Thundered the Thunder.

I'll say that the Pinwheel is not only the best logo in the NBA...it's the best logo in pro sports..I like the Hornets logo at the 2 spot and didn't think I'd like it, but I actually like the Pelicans logo ...the one I think is really overrated is Golden States...boring The Nets ...beyond boring!

I gotta agree with this write-up, and disagree strongly with the imbeciles who criticize the Pinwheel.

7. PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS
Long live the pinwheel, one of the few purely abstract logos in sports. The 10 swirling stripes, five red and five white, are meant to represent two teams crisscrossing the court in a blur, and dammit if that doesn’t move me at the very core.

Breaking news: Design experts almost universally pan it. “It feels so dated, so 1970s,” Fox says.

“It has no personality,” O’Grady adds.

“It’s very corporate — like something from an airline,” Sakahara piles on.

HOW DARE YOU. This is me, plugging my ears and screaming, “Nah-nah, nah-nah, can’t hear you.” Even the Blazers have flirted with a different look; they retained Richardson’s firm several years ago for a rework but ultimately got cold feet about moving away from the pinwheel, Richardson says. STAY STRONG, BLAZERS.

This should be higher than no. 7, but the current pinwheel is drowning in a black mass. Set that baby free, Portland. Let it fly and spin. Some folks prefer the old straight up-and-down version, but the slanted edition gets at the sport’s fast pace.

ATL's pacman is sick.

Ours is good, but have to reiterate what I said 2yrs ago. The cat has to go. And definitely upright that pinwheel and get rid of the black background.

Yeah, I LOVE the pinwheel, and still love the old lettering, but the overall newer 'logo' with the black mass is not great.

It just seems too obvious. The logo should just be the pinwheel, upright, no words.

Any of you guys REAL enough fans to get that pinwheel tattooed on you though?

The Hawks, Bucks, and 76ers are the best among the newest logos.

I wouldn't mind seeing a change in our logo, but the pinwheel must remain!

And possibly create a new secondary logo.

You mess with our pinwheel you might get stuck with THESE! Screen Shot 2015-09-08 at 1.49.05 PM.pngScreen Shot 2015-09-08 at 1.47.57 PM.png

No. You know what we REALLY need is a fat bearded hipster to chainsaw off a ring of a log and then have all the fans ritually touch it. That would be SO UBER COOL!

that would make a person much cooler than others.

So you're saying our logo hypothetically got us farther than LMA literally could?

Yeah, I can agree with that.

I kind of think it would be cool if there was a rule in sports that teams have to change there logo and uniform every 5-7 years or so. (Without the same logo every other year.) When I say change the logo I don't mean it must be a drastic change just slight to drastic change but it must be a recognizable change.

Might as well have them rotate home cities too.

I can picure it now. The Portland Spurs dressed in bright orange and purple.

With all the talk of the pinwheel being straight up or slanted, have they ever tried mirroring it? It seems like the natural thing to do... It forms a "p" and "d" when mirrored, which is the first and last letter of the team name (city).

To me the pinwheel represents offense/defense..and it's a perfect mandala with means balance and harmony..great logo
I like the slanted one best...would like to see a jersey with only the pinwheel centered on the front as an option
