Leston Lawrence, former employee of the Royal Canadian Mint, has been found guilty of smuggling over $138,000 CDN worth of gold out of the Ottawa institution.
Using Vaseline and latex gloves, Lawrence inserted gold blanks, also known as pucks, into his rectum during the night shift at the mint. He often set off metal detectors but was never subject to a cavity search.
Lawrence laundered the gold at a local gold buying business. He was in the process of sending the bulk of the money he earned back to Jamaica to his parents in order for them to build a house.
