Notes: The Blazers continue to hold auditions for free agent big men, as power forward Melvin Ely and center Greg Ostertag took part in scrimmages this week at the team's practice facility in Tualatin. Pritchard said center Jarron Collins and former University of Iowa center Kurt Looby will soon be in. He said he is working on bringing in two other NBA free agents next week.

KP's really scraping the bottom of the barrel, aint he?

I'd assume he is scraping the bottom of the barrel because he wants someone that DNP 90% of the games. What's wrong with a 3rd string bench guy? :dunno:

I thought Greg retired after he donated his kidney to his sister?

Can you say KANSAS JAYHAWK??????????????

I don't want any part of Ostertag on this team...shit why don't we just go after Mark Eaton while we are at it?

Melvin Ely sounds like an interesting idea, and Ostertag is still alive?!?

lmao @ greg ostertag...hope we get him...he can be the new bench warmer everyone makes fun of...like ha but maybe not as good

Why can't he just trade one of our SFs for a PF? Seriously, what are we gonna do if LMA goes down?

I'd much rather take a guy like Ely or Collins before ever considering Ostertag. I wouldn't be too worried about it, though.

I'll be pissed if we sign someone like Collins or Howard when Swift and Ely are still around. Swift is an underachiever, but he has athletic talent and can be a decent energy role player off the bench. Just don't expect great things out of him more than twice during the year. If Melvin Ely performed at the level he did in Charlotte, I'd take him for sure. But he's a bit older and I don't know about his health or fire.

It probably comes down to who would be a better locker room fit. I'd rather have Freeland, IMO.

Greg Osterfat on this roster is just plain wrong. ugh

I hate him just as much as anybody but Im sure its him just getting a workout for fun and being a big body to bang against for the noobs...I doubt he would take a contract if offered

Honestly, none of these guys - Ostertag, Collins, et al - are worth getting hot and bothered about. They are auditioning for the 12th man role. They will be expected to sit on the bench, play garbage time, keep out of trouble, sign a lot of autographs, and not cost too much. That's it. Basically any live body will do. Just pick one whom the other guys on the team like, who is OK living in Portland, and understands he's a high priced cheerleader, but less pretty than the Blazer Dancers. As long as they don't sign some total A-Hole, I really don't care who ends up getting the job.

Might as well bring in Karl Malone while we're at it - see what he's got left in the tank. And Dennis Rodman . . . and what's The Admiral up to these days?

Well, a backup big might not seem so important, but if that is true, why was Portland willing to put out so much money for Paul Milsap? What happens if any one of our three bigs goes down with an injury for the season?

by the way, i wonder why they aren't looking at Steven Hill, didn't he do decent one summer league, and i see he is auditioning in Miami.

The diff is that Millsap was expected to get at least some meaningful PT. These 12th men are not.

I guess the Blazers feel it is unlikely that 2 or more of the big men will go down with serious injuries all at the same time. And Outlaw can back up at PF, maybe not great, but OK for short term.

I don't think Ostertag is auditioning for a roster spot as much as he's just a live body to throw in there against GO. He may think he's auditioning, but I can't see any reason to sign him. Do we really need to carry more than two centers when we only have one power forward?

Don't we technically have 4 (LMA, Outlaw, JP, Dante) PFs? And only Oden/Przy (and LMA, I guess) play C. I'd say that 4/5 is a pretty decent need for us.

This chump sucked in his "prime"! No thanks!

Outlaw is a small forward who Nate used as a 4 out of necessity. Pendergraph just had hip surgery and is out most likely through the balance of 2009. Cunningham is probably a little undersized and green to be a full-time backup to LMA.

I think it's safe to say we only have one definitive power forward we can rely on going into the season.

And Ostertag is not a four. He barely has the footspeed to keep up with other centers, let alone power forwards.

Great point. Also, our two centers have major injury history, if one of them is out we would be very thin at C.

I say we bring in Will Perdue. He'd kick Osterslag's butt! Perdue has 4 rings. How many does Ostertag have?

Seriously, these guys are auditioning to be practice fodder. The minimum requirement is a big body with a pulse. Anything more is gravy. Somebody to make Oden work in practice - and if they can teach him a few veteran tricks, all the better.

Where for art thou Chuck Nevitt?

What about bringing back Brian Skinner? He's a UFA, right?

Veteran, he's got hustle, played 16mpg last season and averaged 4ppg, 4rpg (1.5 offensive), and a block to boot.

If I remember correctly he's got a little shot he can hit from about 8-10 feet out.

If I remember correctly he hated playing here. But I liked him.

Probably didn't like riding the bench on an absolute crap team. Still, his sour attitude didn't levae the impression that he was a great locker room guy during his brief stay in Portland.

Maybe that would be different now. Winning tends to make people a little more agreeable.

If the Blazers actually sign Ostertag i will buy a custom Ostertag jersey and post a pic of me rocking it in the pictures of you thread.
